After having 50s via Southampton I returned to KX for the 1605 to York. Today I would be disappointed to see a 47 on the train. The next possible Deltic would not be until one of the overnight trains to Edinburgh so I decided to take an alternative route home via the Midland Main Line.

One of my favourite trains, although I only ever travelled on it between Haymarket and Edinburgh, was the 0643 Carstairs to Edinburgh. On weekdays it consisted of several coaches carrying mail and parcels. On a Saturday however it was just one coach, a BCK (Brake Corridor Composite, I think). Nobody else travelling, it was like having your own private train.

The highlight of the day was getting a required 31 on the Newcastle portion of the Poole-Leeds service. The 31 quickly succumbed at Rotherham Masbrough where it made an unscheduled stop. 40074 came quickly (presumably from Tinsley) to our rescue and took the train forward to Newcastle with a relatively short delay.

There was engineering work taking place somewhere along the WCML which restricted the number of direct Euston-Birmingham/Wolves services. IIRC there were several additional services booked to run from Paddington. The 0755 additional was booked for a Class 50. At the time a 50 was quite rare at Wolverhampton so I decided that I would sample this. I returned via Bristol and Salisbury before resuming with some Deltic haulage.

Apologies, I am one day late with this one!
Monday 27th February 1978

Having completed my Guards Training, been passed out and signed for the route from Mallaig to Garelochhead this was my first shift as a Guard bases in Fort William.
01.40 Fort William (Mallaig Jn) to Cadder - worked to Tyndrum Upper. (04.10)
27021 - 23 wagons plus Brake Van B954187 354 tonnes including loco, 30 SLU
30 SLU was the length limit for the West Highland line although due to the shortest loops being 24 SLU when an up train was over 24 SLU the down trains it would meet had to be limited to 24 SLU and vice versa.
01.10 Cadder to Fort William (Mallaig Jn) worked from Tyndrum (04.20)
27111 - 12 wagons plus Brake Van B951351, 461 tonnes including loco 14 SLU (max load for a class 27 was 495 tonnes).

I spent that full first week on the night freights (01.40 and 02.30 from Fort William and 01.10 and 01.50 from Cadder and again the second week.
Booked changeover point on both workings was Tyndrum Upper although in reality due to late running of the down train changeover was twice at Crianlarich and once at Ardlui and although both excursions to Crianlarich resulted in arrivals back in Fort Wlliam around 50 mins late (but still well within the 8 hour day) on the Ardlui trip we left there 1 hr 26mins late but with a clean run arrived home just 20 mins late. On one occasion in the second week I also worked my first overtime on the 07.25 ballast with 9 x 2 axle ballast hoppers plus brake van to drop stone in section between Rannoch and Bridge of Orchy, booking off after 11hrs 40 mins on duty.

Over these two weeks traction was surprisingly varied given that at that time there was one train each each direction booked for 2 x cl 20 with the others three freights each way all booked single class 27 (nominally a 27/0 although two of those three diagrams required a dual braked cl 27/0 and there were only four of these so a cl 27/1 or 27/2 would normally substitute).
cl 27/0 - 3 times (all VB only)
cl 27/1 - 5 times
cl 27/2 - 2 times
cl 20 - 2 times
2 x cl 20 - 6 times
2 x cl 25 - 1 time
cl 20 + cl 25 - 1 time
And the above mentioned Ballast working was 20049
During these two weeks I rode in 13 different brake vans - 4 of them twice including the Ballast - and on the other four occasions with a fully fitted train I rode in the back cab of a cl27 three times and in the trailing class 20 on the fourth trip.

Happy days

A good week out on the WHL with a variety of traction and rolling stock. Was there snow on the ground?

A good TWO weekS out on the WHL with a variety of traction and rolling stock. Was there snow on the ground?
Recurring comments under 'weather' are mild, drizzle and wet, just one day recorded as cold which perhaps meant frost rather than snow although possibly the latter higher up. I imagine I would only have recorded snow if it were falling or creating difficult underfoot conditions.
I note I did record snow on 13th April (Crianlarich Timber train, 2 class 20 with gross load 666t for 33 SLU (+ 3 SLU specially authorised for this working)), and several times during the 78/79 winter.

it does cross my mind that this sample two weeks may give the impression appearances of classes 25 (at least on freight), 27/1 and particularly 27/2 were much more common than the reality over a 52 week sample, likewise single class 20 working on freights. I would guess it coincided with a period of very low class 27/0 availability!

I would add as far as comfort for riding in the back cab class 27 provided a much more comfortable seat than cl 20, 25 or 37.

A leap year and knowing this would be the last chance to have a Deltic on this day I set out to do this. The only problem was that I had to attend college until 1900 and would have little chance of achieving this once I had missed the 1955 York-KX. However I just managed it by the skin of my teeth when Deltic 15 worked the Bradford-KX from Doncaster a little after 2300.

Sunday 05 March 1978 (when you could do railtours over a weekend starting in different parts of the country with rail transport overnight to connect)

Having found myself at Crewe on the Saturday night off the return LCGB (NW) Caledonian Railtour No4 it was off to Paddington for the RPPR Deltic Ranger Rerun

86039 WN 2045 (04/03) Barrow in Furness - London Euston (Crewe to Rugby)

86039 WN 2045 (04/03) Barrow in Furness - London Euston (Bletchley to London Euston)

a brisk walk followed on the mean streets of London from Euston to Victoria via the Mall and Buckingham Palace for

73106 SL 1A96 0445 London Victoria - Eastbourne (London Victoria to East Croydon)
73126 SL 1C00 0450 London Victoria - Horsham (East Croydon to Three Bridges)
1*4VEP EMU 0528 Brighton - London Victoria (Three Bridges to London Victoria)

which afforded plenty of time to make my way to Paddington in time for the 0815 departure of MELD to Paignton. Sadly lacking from this second more successful attempt of getting a Deltic to Paignton was haulage by Western Ranger over T&DR metals to Kingswear; a washed out bridge in the aftermath of the issues that befell the first attempt putting paid to that. Instead we enjoyed a run to Par behind a class 46. Joy!!!!!

As an aside in my notes I have Meld running through Exeter Saint Davids on the through line and Newton Abbot on the Down Main (non platform road?) enroute to Paignton. And after leaving Paignton for the trip into Cornwall I have the train running to Hackney Sidings via the Up Main at Newton Abbot before running back to Newton Abbot to facilitate the loco change. I hope I didn't imagine that.

Thursday 05 March 1981
After finishing an early shift at would I go home .....Nah!

46029 GD 1A40 2030 Newcastle - London Kings Cross (York to Doncaster)
via Gascoigne Wood and Selby Canal curve - thank you and goodnight except I still had to head north. Some not too shabby haulages too but that's another day.

The 2000 KX-Aberdeen was probably the worst overnight train to take to Edinburgh. It was usually very busy, the sleeping cars were at the front so you couldn’t get a seat close to the loco, and with arrival into Edinburgh sometime before 4 the chance of getting any sleep was limited. However at the time Deltic 12 was slated as the next candidate for withdrawal so I had to take it.

Just two months after the withdrawal of the last Deltics a get together was arranged for the many Deltic bashers. The location a pub in Wellingborough, I can’t remember which one. After time was called we all said our goodbyes, a lot of them I never saw again. I headed off to the West Country and the Old Cider Bar in Newton Abbot.

Having arrived into Edinburgh in the early hours I thought that I would be kicking my heels for a while. However rather than the expected class 47 waiting to take the train to Aberdeen I was very pleased to see (and hear) a pair of 26s ready for the journey instead. A good day was had with various traction including the one and only time I had a 27 out of Scotland.

The Up Midnight arrived into Newton Abbot with a pair of 50s although this didn’t mean they would both be working through to Paddington. The train was being diverted via Salisbury so at Exeter 50015 ran around the train and headed off up to Salisbury with 50003 banking the train to Central. Shortly afterwards I fell asleep; the next thing I noticed was travelling between Reading and Paddington feeling very cold. I later found out that 50015 was replaced by the non-boilered 47267! I travelled over to Liverpool St to cover the Clacton services which, due to engineering work, were booked to be loco hauled.

Interesting, I spent Tues Feb 22 at Woking (from around midday to late afternoon) and this was my first visit to Woking, so must have seen 50034 as one of my first 50s unless it was running seriously late. Probably the second: I'd have presumably see three 50s that day, the 1521 Woking-Waterloo (this service) and 1336 and 1536 Woking-Exeter (1310 and 1510 ex-Waterloo).

No actual records of loco or unit numbers on that day but I do remember that the 1230 Guildford-Waterloo stopper (the service I used to reach Woking) was formed of a single 2HAP (normal stock 8VEP).

Although I do not have any details of timekeeping for the day, I am presuming the train was not seriously delayed because the service would have made a comfortable connection, via the underground, with my next train the 1637 out of Kings Cross.
