This was the last time I had Deltic 12 for haulage. The day started very well especially when Pinza worked forward to Aberdeen. Everything seemed okay on our arrival at Aberdeen but No.7 headed off to Ferryhill and never returned for its booked train, the 1630 to Leeds. I hoped that it might return south on one of the overnight trains to KX but it wasn’t to be. I was stuck with 47255 on the last train out, fortunately No.15 was waiting at Edinburgh to take the train to London.

My best tally was 10, detailed in #5477. This feat was made easier once the Deltics had been relegated to the Kings X- York/Hull services. It would’ve been a lot more difficult to achieve before the introduction of HSTs, when Deltics were operating primary services.

Yes, you are correct. I have double-checked my notes and can confirm that 55018 worked the 1405 KX-YK.

Sometimes you would be better just staying at home. My plan was to cover the northbound overnight trains from KX to Edinburgh which were being diverted via Carlisle. First I would hopefully have a trip to Bradford with a Deltic and return with it to London. No 18 obliged and off to Bradford I went, however this is where my weekend started to go wrong. Rather than return to London No.18 headed off to Holbeck with 47402 replacing it. I took the train to Peterborough where I managed to pick up No.14 returning from Cleethorpes. I didn’t know at the time but there were only 6 Deltics available for service, so it was unsurprising that non of the overnights produced a Deltic. I should have returned home but I decided to head on to Edinburgh, surely my luck would change!

After enduring over 400 Duff miles I hoped that things would be better than yesterday. I took a push-pull service to Glasgow Central which was diverted via Mossend and then returned to Edinburgh to cover an Aberdeen-KX service. Having passed Haymarket and noticing a lack of Deltics I realised that my luck was out today. The KX service produced a 47 and I watched it head off south via Carlisle. I headed south to Dunbar, bus to Berwick where I was greeted by the presence of 46047! I returned to York thinking that I may just finish off the weekend with a Class 40 on the Sunday Only Man Vic-Newcastle. Alas it wasn’t to be and I was bowled again!

Pre privatisation Inter City West Coast operated a small fleet of Class 158s (158747-52) along side its locomotive hauled fleet. These were used in the main on its services from Manchester/Liverpool to Glasgow/Edinburgh. These services were good for cheap tickets. In those days I needed to do a lot of lines north of the border so my target that day was The Fife Circle.
From Preston my unit was 158751 to Edinburgh. As I was also a bus spotter in those days time was taken in Edinburgh before returning to Waverley. In those days Scotland had a batch of 150s which operated mainly on the Circle and ultimately ended up in South Wales. Up to Dunfermline I had 150252, a unit that I have only ridden once since on a train from Bidston to Neston. The return from Dunfermline was via the long way round via Thornton with 150259, a unit that I have never ridden since. The journey home was on 158752 who was to become a member of the First North Western fleet.
Fife Circle ticked off the list.
