I know this a little early, but does anyone know if there any major engineering works on WCML or ECML over the Christmas or New Year Period?
I need to confirm dates in the next week or so for a new year trip to Cumbria, so looking to see if there any dates best avoided for travelling!

Yes. Very much so.

ECML has multiple works all the way up, including a concentration between Kings Cross and Peterborough but also further north where we’re recontrolling York IECC.

MML will be heavily disrupted due to work at Kentish Town and also further north around Kettering.

WCML is looking a little more favourable this Christmas than it has done in the past, but there is work scheduled, particularly Euston - MK.

It’s fresh in the mind following a T-20 week’s national review last week!

So would that mean that from the north the only way into London is via Paddington with various changes and Marylebone with changes? If so, London should be pretty quiet this Christmas!

Paddington is also affected by a major S&C renewal at Southall East Jn ;)

In reality, not all of these will be all-line blocks throughout the period so there will be a route north maintained somehow. Specifics will materialise in due course I’m sure. My main concern is the construction side rather than the ops side.

Sounds like West Anglia will be the main route to London if this is the case. The GEML, according to the Rules of the Route Engineering Access Statement, is closed Ingatestone to Liverpool Street for Crossrail works.

So is the ECML closed between London and Peterborough on any days other than Christmas and Boxing Day?

Will that mean a repeat of last year with there being one pair of line operational into Paddington with fewer trains topping at Ealing Broadway.

SWR's December engineering works.
https://www.southwesternrailway.com/plan-my-journey/planned-improvements/december-works

Advance notice of engineering work over the Christmas holiday period.

22 to 24 December 2018

About half of London Waterloo station will be closed Sunday 23 and Monday 24 December. This will affect platforms 1 to 10 and mostly long distance and suburban services towards Chessington, Epsom, Surbiton, Kingston, Basingstoke and Alton. Other train services will also be altered and only about half the normal train service will run in and out of London Waterloo.

There will be no Southern train services between London Victoria and Clapham Junction from Saturday 22 to Monday 24 December. This will result in extra passengers for our services into London Waterloo, which are likely to be very busy through this period.

The lines between Slough and London Paddington will be closed Sunday 23 and Monday 24 December. A very limited service will run in and out of London Paddington via Oxford and Bicester. Buses will replace trains between Reading, Slough and London Paddington. This will result in trains between London Waterloo and Reading being busier than normal.
This will also affect train services between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport.

The junctions in the Westbury station area are being replaced Sunday 23 and Monday 24 December. There will be no South Western Railway service between Salisbury and Bristol. Buses will replace Great Western Railway services between Warminster and Trowbridge.

South Western Railway and Island Line will run NO SERVICE on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

The railway does not shut down over the Christmas period.
Network Rail may run engineering or maintenance trains and the conductor rail will remain “live” at all times.
It is never safe to go on the tracks.

27 December 2018 to 3 January 2019
About half of London Waterloo station will be closed Thursday 27 December and Friday 28 December. This will affect platforms 12 to 24 and mostly services running via Twickenham, Hounslow and Staines, which will not run between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction. Remaining train services between Clapham Junction and London Waterloo will be very busy due to London Victoria also being partly closed.

There will be no Southern services between London Victoria and Clapham Junction from Thursday 27 December to Tuesday 1 January. This will result in extra passengers for our services into London Waterloo, which are likely to be very busy through this period.

Some lines between Slough and London Paddington will be closed from Thursday 27 December to Monday 31 December. A reduced train service will run in and out of London Paddington.

Guildford station (except for platform 1 and the lines via Effingham Junction) will be closed from Thursday 27 December to Monday 31 December. A train service will run between London Waterloo and Guildford on the route which remains open. Trains on all other routes will be replaced by buses in the Guildford area.

The junctions in the Westbury station area are being replaced from Thursday 27 December to Thursday 3 January. There will be no South Western Railway services between Salisbury and Bristol, or between Salisbury, Westbury, Frome and Yeovil Pen Mill during this period. Buses will replace Great Western Railway services between Warminster and Trowbridge.

Major engineering work will be taking place at other locations on the railway network throughout the holiday period and all long distance passengers should check their travel plans in advance.

More detailed information about Christmas and New Year services and alterations due to engineering work in the South Western Railway area will be posted in due course.

I didn’t think ANY trains were running out of Paddington 23/24 Dec. SWR appear to think a limited service will be operating via Oxford and Bicester contradicting what GWR are saying.

A last minute signalling issue has been found. Currently no services able to run through or call at Westbury. Selected trains between Bristol-Frome/Weymouth are running via Westbury Avoiding Line, others being turned at Trowbridge from the Bristol direction. Very limited Rail Replacement Buses; GWR tickets are being accepted on the D1 Warminster-Westbury-Trowbridge-Bradford-Bath local bus route. Advice is currently do not travel unless essential, and check GWR and National Rail websites for info.

(Mods feel free to post this separately if necessary.)

Estimate now slipped to 1600. Limited buses available only due to being caught with pants down.

Estimate now until end of day
Fingers crossed it's finally sorted by start of play tomorrow morning! After all the various debacles NR has had I thought Christmas works were supposed to be meticuously planned and there weren't supposed last minute issues with a succession of missed deadlines.

The work itself was all finished early. Alegedly a problem came to light in the relay room underneath Westbury panel during final testing and it's obviously required a lot of work to modify / fix.
