D&G have done some improvements on weekdays - earlier start on 12, later services on 31 and 37, faster services to Nantwich and have invested in new buses in Crewe. Only a few times has it been standing only from my experience but I don't travel during the peak. Having D&G as the largest operator makes it easier for day ticket travel though

Other than Crewe & Nantwich, D&G don't offer useful local zone day tickets. They do a Knutsford one but it only covers the town of Knutsford, excluding the larger employment sites just outside the town and it's only 20p cheaper than 2 x singles! Didn't Arriva offer a Macclesfield day ticket?

I don't use the 49 route myself but one of the grumbles with D&G seemed to be only an hourly service to Weaverham and it taking hours to source a replacement vehicle when the allocated one failed. At least now it's half hourly, so a failed bus shouldn't leave the route without a service for hours.

There is a Macclesfield weekly ticket for £20 that also covers High Peak services which has boundaries of Lyme Green, Bollington, Hurdsfield and Prestbury so covers a decent area, I just feel that having a weekly priced at 10x singles doesn't really make a great deal of sense.

And there is no day ticket equivalent for Macclesfield

Vehicle 122 has been tracking as the wrong vehicle for a few weeks now. It was tracking as 43, now it's tracking as 504.

D&G are proposing to vary routes no. 37 (Crewe - Sandbach - Winsford - Northwich) and 38 (Crewe - Sandbach - Congleton - Macclesfield) from 3 June 2024. Unclear at this stage what the variation is

It's just a change to the stand allocation at Crewe bus station.

How will that affect the 38 as it runs within Cheshire East ?
31, 37 and 38 will all be announced together. The 38 amendments reflect some of the 37 changes which is why it can't be loaded yet... there's exciting news ahead :)

As I’m bored I will speculate on what I’d like to see evening 37 extended at both ends for a northwich - Crewe service or if not then a X31 evening service on missing week nights. Adding an extra northwich - Winsford day time service (old 29 maybe) extending to the top estates to do away with the current Winsford circular monstrosity. Obviously the 38 should be doubled in frequency.

I think you may have a different definition of "exciting news" to me ;)

I was hoping for the return of Sunday services on the 38 - Cheshire East must have some of their BSIP funding left over to support that

It's not - but announcement after election as Winsford has an election and impacts them
This aged well. Couldn't be announced to due to election and then on polling day announce it!

Changes make sense. X31 had limited potential given Grange only has a 9-2 service but then amazingly got a Friday and Saturday evening service.

Agreed.

Speaking of the 20:36 route 31 bus, it looked like it might have skipped a few stops in the Winsford area tonight, according to the BusTimes tracking.

14 July 2024 D&G 84X

  • 84X: Sunday service withdrawn from 14 July.

This will mean only Stagecoach will operate between Crewe and Nantwich on Sundays (every 90 minutes). This is the lowest frequency in decades on the route

That’s a real shame just as Crewe was starting to get a regular pattern of buses on a Sunday again, but at least Nantwich still has a Sunday service even if it is only every 90 minutes. unlike towns like Northwich & Winsford

Yes Cheshire West seem more focused on weekday evening services with BSIP and adding N3 in Northwich than Sunday services

Whereas Cheshire East are focusing more on Sundays with funding Sunday services on 12, 38 and 130

I'd like to see a Sunday service every 90 minutes, which incorporated the 37 between Northwich and Middlewich, and 42 between Middlewich and Crewe to ensure direct service to Leighton Hospital on Sundays as well as reducing overlap on already funded services given 38 being funded which mimics the route between Sandbach and Crewe

Leighton Hospital is regaining a Sunday bus service (on route 12) in June 2024. It is up to Cheshire West council whether they wish to fund a Sunday bus service between Northwich, Winsford and Crewe via Leighton Hospital. A service on this route (given number 30) was due to be introduced in Spring 2020, but was cancelled because of Covid.

Sorry I meant a direct service from Mid Cheshire to Leighton

No. 30 merged two arriva services but with D&G now doing a 31 via a different route, it has become a little more challenging for route consistency

What are the loadings on D&G's 84x like in comparison to Stagecoach's 84? In particular on a Sunday can it be said that there is demand for the two services or is it the case that a 90 minute service on the 84 is probably sufficient for the level of demand on the Crewe to Nantwich corridor?

Also if anyone is able to answer I'd be interested to find out have the 31 and 37 ever had Sunday provision and if so was that with D&G or another operator?

The 37 had a Sunday service under Arriva about 25 years ago.

I moved from Northwich not long before the Kickstart project and new Centros on the 31 in 2006. Can't recall if it had a Sunday service but suspect not.

The 31 has a limited Sunday service from Winsford to Crewe to coincide with visiting times at Leighton Hospital but I think this ended late 80s.

This 2006 timetable shows the 37 evening and Sundays replaced by 36A and 36B - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xRZbCsticKhIf6tAsXooTNEYDSUS_aJw/view

A note on the new website that the Handforth Dean free bus is stopping in July.

I assume no replacement from another operator, as they do mention Stagecoach will continue to run Crewe - Nantwich on Sundays in the item about the 84X Sunday service being removed - perhaps surprising, as they are still competing for the rest of the week.

https://www.dgbus.co.uk/service-updates/
The Handforth Dean free bus services will cease to operate after 7th July 2024.

For alternative buses from Wilmslow see service 312, which runs hourly Monday to Saturday.

We regret that there is no replacement service from Offerton, Bosden Farm, Hazel Grove, Poynton or Bramhall.

From 14th July 2024 service 84X will no longer operate on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Weekday times will remain unchanged.

Stagecoach service 84 will continue to provide a service every 90 minutes between Crewe and Nantwich on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

It's from the Railwaymedia site of NW timetables in the Arriva section:-
