Rather surprisingly no games in the Premier or EFL have so far (07:30) been called off due to the weather!
Mansfield Town v Forest Green Rovers is now OFF.

07:30 is just a bit early for pitch inspections, unless it's really obvious that the match can't take place.

Normally whomever is undertaking an early morning pitch inspection will schedule it for first light, so maybe at or shortly after 08:00, particularly if the away team is about to set off and travel a fair distance to get there.

May Bobby Charton’s soul rest in peace

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton dies aged 86

ITV News Sports Editor Steve Scott looks back at the life and career of Sir Bobby Charlton, who has died at the age of 86

Sir Bobby Charlton has died aged 86, it has been announced.

In a statement released on Saturday afternoon, Manchester United said: "Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club.

"Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world.

"His unparalleled record of achievement, character and service will be forever etched in the history of Manchester United and English football; and his legacy will live on through the life-changing work of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.

"The club’s heartfelt sympathies are with his wife Lady Norma, his daughters and grandchildren, and all who loved him."

The footballer is most famous for being one of Britain's greatest goal scorers.

Sir Bobby joined Manchester United on the 1 June 1953, at the age of 16.

In his 17 years at the club, he played 758 games and scored 249 goals.

These were both records that were only broken by Ryan Giggs in 2008 and Wayne Rooney in 2017, respectively.

Sir Bobby was also a member of the England team that won the World Cup in 1966 which was when he also became the winner of the Ballon d'Or.

He still remains the third highest goal scorer for England.
Sir Bobby was presented with the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award on 14 December 2008.

And the next year, in March 2009, he was given the freedom of the city of Manchester.

On 15 February 2016, Manchester United announced the South Stand of Old Trafford would be renamed in honour of Sir Bobby Charlton.

In his commitment to football and sport, Sir Bobby played a key role in a number of English World Cup and Olympic Games bids, including the successful London 2012 campaign.

As well as this, taking part in charity to raise awareness for several important issues.

In a statement, his family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was surrounded by his family.

"His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him.

"We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time."

Tributes paid to 'hero to millions' Sir Bobby Charlton, who's died at 86
Among the first to pay tribute, Gary Neville said Sir Bobby Charlton was the club's greatest ambassador. The Premier League said: "It is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest players in English football history. "Our thoughts and sincere condolences go to Sir Bobby’s family and friends, and to all at Manchester United."
The Manchester United Supporters Trust said: "Every Manchester United fan will be heartbroken to learn of the death of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest legends ever to wear the red shirt.

"Perhaps more than any other players, Sir Bobby represented a lineage from the history and heritage of our club until the present day.

"With his passing we lose the last player to survive the Munich air crash, the darkest day in our history.

"The loss of Sir Bobby won't just be felt by Manchester United fans, but by England fans and indeed football fans the world over. Our club and our game has lost one of its all time greats.

"Our love and thoughts are with Sir Bobby's friends and family. There truly was only one Bobby Charlton."

His death leaves Geoff Hurst as the only survivor from England‘s 1966 WC winning side. I saw Bobby Charlton play on a few occasions for Man United against Sunderland at Roker Park in the sixties. Some greats on the pitch in those matches, Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law, George Best, Jim Baxter, Charlie Hurley….

Many times I had the pleasure of watching Stoke City play Manchester United at the old Victoria Ground. To see Bobby Charlton, Denis Law & George Best in the same forward line was almost a pleasure. Three of the greatest footballers to have played the game.

It depends where the away fans are coming from, and with Sky live games there are lots of tales of pressure being applied to the ref to let the game go ahead
It's a fine balance, especially with so many different interested parties involved. Trouble is, there's criticism when matches are called off early just as much as when they are called off late - it seems to be one of those things where no decision will ever be the right one for everyone, no matter when it is made.

In the case in question, Rotherham won't have wanted it called off as they lose the TV money and cop for Ipswich's expenses in travel and (possibly) accommodation for the game. With other expenses that can't be recovered it's probably pretty costly for them.

Rotherham United would like to reassure supporters travelling to tonight’s game that the club currently has no concerns about the playing surface at AESSEAL New York Stadium, despite the inclement weather around the UK at present.

The club’s ground staff have – and will continue to – monitor the condition of the pitch in the build-up to tonight’s 8pm kick off against Ipswich Town but, at present, have no concerns about a potential postponement.

As a result, there are currently NO pitch inspections planned ahead of tonight’s game but should this change throughout the course of the day, we will to communicate that message at the earliest possible opportunity.

We do recognise that the weather may have affected travel plans for supporters attending the match and would remind those same fans to exercise caution on their route to the stadium and allow plenty of time to account for any delays that the weather may have had on their journey. As always, we would advise fans travelling to check the latest traffic updates and information from public transport providers ahead of their trip.

Think it was reported on Friday night that the postponement was due to safety concerns outside the ground, rather than the playing surface itself. For that reason, the decision will have been made by (or on the advice of) South Yorkshire Police, not Rotherham United or the matchday officials.

I saw it stated that the decision was made by the Safety Advisory Group, which is a combination of police, club, local authority and, possibly, more. It could even have related to the pressure on police resources in the area rather than simply conditions around the ground.

Hearts 1-4 Celtic. I was surprised at the ease of the victory. Despite a reasonably one-sided set of results over the last while I would never take the Jambos for granted. Rodgers is noted for his motivational and comms skills and just as in his first term with the club as number of players have noticeably and quickly improved under his guidance. Matt O'R I'm looking at you. Maybe next term we'll finally prove capable of a longer Champions League tenure. Not this time round I fear.

Rotherham Station was flooded again in Friday’s heavy rain & the track runs very close to the rear of New York Stadium, there was also some flooding in the Meadowhall area which would have affected supporters getting to & from the ground as this is near the M1, indeed some X1/X10/X78 services on Friday we’re running at least an hour late.

RIP Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the best players to play the game. It leaves Sir Geoff Hurst as the only member of the 1966 World Cup team still alive.

Bill Kenwright, Everton chairman dead aged 78.
Breaking

The Liverpool-born film and theatre producer joined the club's board in 1989 before completing a £20m takeover in 1999.

Bill Kenwright - the West End producer and long-term chairman of Everton Football Club - has died at the age of 78.

A post by the club on X, formerly Twitter, said: "Everton Football Club is in mourning following the death of Chairman Bill Kenwright CBE, who passed away peacefully last night aged 78, surrounded by his family and loved ones."

The Liverpool-born businessman made his name in the arts, at first as an actor with a breakthrough role in Coronation Street - playing the entrepreneurial Gordon Clegg.

But Kenwright's own entrepreneurial talent would prove his true calling.

After swapping a role in front of the camera for backstage business, he became one of Britain's most successful film and theatre producers.

During his career, he worked on a string of hits, including Willy Russell's musical Blood Brothers, and Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

But in the streets of his home city, he was best known as the long-term chairman of his boyhood club, Everton.
Born in Liverpool's Wavertree district - less than five miles from the club's stadium - Kenwright was inspired as a child by his idol, Everton forward Dave Hickson.

In 1989, he was invited to join the board of directors at Goodison Park and rose to become deputy chairman before completing a £20m takeover in 1999.

He was appointed chairman in 2004 and a year later saw the club end a nearly 10-year wait for European football by qualifying for the Champions League under the guidance of then manager David Moyes.

In 2016, Kenwright sold half his stake in Everton to British-Iranian businessman Farhad Moshiri - though he stayed on as chairman. Mr Moshiri continued to increase his own stake over the next six years.

However, in September, he agreed to sell his 94% stake to American investment fund 777 Partners - a deal which is currently awaiting approval by regulators.

'Completely successful' operation

Earlier this month, Everton announced Kenwright had undergone an operation to remove a cancerous tumour from his liver.

In a statement released at the time, the club said the operation had been "completely successful" but Kenwright would undergo a "prolonged period in an intensive care unit".

The club said Kenwright had "worked hard" alongside Mr Moshiri "right up until the day" of his operation to help facilitate the proposed takeover by 777 Partners.

Earlier this year, Mr Moshiri backed Kenwright amid protests from Everton fans directed at the long-term chairman and the club's ownership.

Family 'devastated to share the sad news'

Outside of football, Kenwright had two marriages - the first to New Zealand-born actress-turned-hotelier, Anouska Hempel, and the second to actress Jenny Seagrove.

He also had a daughter, Lucy Kenwright, from his relationship with the actress Virginia Stride.

In a statement, his family said they were "devastated to share the sad news of the loss of a beloved partner, father, grandfather and friend: Bill Kenwright CBE.

"Following a long battle with illness Bill passed away peacefully last night, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

"Bill was driven by his passions and devoted his life to them; his deep love of theatre, film, music and his beloved Everton, and the families they created.

"He impacted the lives of thousands, whether that be through the launching of careers or his unending loyalty, generosity and unfaltering friendship and support."

They added: "In a multi-award-winning career spanning six decades, Bill produced over 500 West End, Broadway, UK touring and international theatre productions, films and music albums. His impact on the arts industry has been profound."

Tributes to 'friend and mentor'

Sir Ian McKellen paid tribute, writing on X: "Bill Kenwright (1945-2023) Like many grateful actors I am in debt to Bill Kenwright for employment."

He added: "We were young together, when he was in Coronation Street and I was dipping a toe into Shaftesbury Avenue.

"Since then, I have admired the resilient way in which he encouraged theatre to thrive in London and in the regions.

"Whether it was yet another tour of that wonderful musical 'Blood Brothers' or sponsoring the Peter Hall Company in the classics."

Singer Antony Costa paid tribute to his "friend and mentor", tweeting: "Just heard the news my friend, and mentor and the person who gave me the chance to perform on stage Mr Bill Kenwright has passed away.

"You were one in a million Sir... we loved talking football R.I.P Bill xx"

Comedian Jason Manford said Kenwright will be "sadly missed". He tweeted: "Saddened to hear Bill Kenwright has died.

"Met up with him several times over the years as we attempted to work together so very sad that will now never happen.

"Was always funny and honest and with a deep love for theatre and football. Will be sadly missed."

Kenwright was awarded a CBE in the 2001 New Year's Honours List, for services to film and theatre.
Rest In Peace.

Any ramifications for the takeover i wonder which seemingly looked a done deal a few weeks ago but is still no nearer being sorted.

As he was, at most, a minority shareholder it shouldn't have any effect. The prospective buyers actually finding the money and satisfying the authorities that they are suitable may be a considerably bigger issue.

After Banbury v Darlo was called off on Saturday due to a waterlogged poitch - this time at 0900 vice 1447 like last season! - we played out a 0 - 0 draw with Blyth Spartans

Not a classic by any means but perhaps a touch of improvement in that we kept a clean sheet. We didn't look like scoring mind. I think only 6 points from safety now with Spennymoor up next. Playing us seems to be thier cup final.

Merthyr Town 1...Winchester City 2 (Handley 5; McCormick 30, Barron 90)

Well, well, well. You'd think the Southern League had a vendetta given that it's now two years running that they've made us do this fixture in midweek while far closer clubs get to go there on a Saturday - I expect this fixture to be on a Saturday next season, no ifs, buts or excuses under any circumstances!

However, even with their main keeper in Australia with the Army FA and their starting left back on his honeymoon, City refused to be cowed even after going a goal behind, and Josh McCormick bent a rocket into the top corner to level things up. Both sides then went for the winner with the woodwork struck at each end in the second half but in the final minute of added time, Jamie Barron lobbed the keeper from 35 yards directly from a free kick on the right flank. No doubt Dial M for Merthyr has already blamed everyone to the right of Chairman Mao...

Spurs won again last night, 2-1 at Palace to go five points clear. Playing well but the season still has a long way to go. :D
