Worth noting that after the initial flurry of posts, the OP has gone quiet since the various offers to scan the Aztec code for purchase time, and the observation of the inconsistency in their story as to when it was purchased.

Hopefully if nothing else this has given them some insight as to what the rules are regarding timing of the purchase of a ticket, and the evidence that GWR will be able to call upon if challenged, whether by their father's lawyer colleagues or whoever, as to the actions of the inspector in issuing the PF.

Especially because if the ticket was presented and scanned, and then they have been Penalty Fared, the PF would be invalid by default (assuming this ticket they bought was valid for the whole journey).

A hypothetical version of events could be that when asked for a ticket, the OP didn't have one, then got issued a PF, then went on to purchase a ticket after in order to appeal.

As others have said, how did the OP get through the gates without a ticket? Maybe a Reading to Reading West or tilehurst ticket was bought to get through the gates expecting no on train check?
