OK, I know its probably some kind of sand-sized blanketing material used (historically ) for clay digs, but any other information gratefully received!

Are you thinking of ‘Meldon Dust’? The ‘finest’ material from Meldon Quarry, much used on the Southern Region for walkways, etc.

It was often used without cement; in which case it was quite friable. I remember a sad incident when a team member broke his leg after putting it in a rabbit hole dug in Meldon Dust.Did it have cement also added to it as it as after some time it was like trying to dig through concrete if you had to dig a trench where a path / walkway had been constructed using that stuff.
