Would both Sheffield garages ever get merged on to one site, like First has to Olive Grove?
No. Having two depots at opposite ends of the city works quite well for us.

As an aside on the E400H, has someone like Zeebus not thought of either an upgrade or full conversion module? There must be significant numbers of them reaching the point where something needs doing but with a good 5-7 years potential life left in the vehicle. I'd be surprised with advances in battery cell and management technology, as well as improvements in supercaps that something can't be done at a viable cost point to keep these buses going.
On the one hand you’re criticising us for fleet age, on the other hand you are suggesting extending fleet age by repowering. ‍♂️

The hybrids are 11-12 years old now. Repowering was considered a few years back but not now when they’re designed for a 15 year life. The world has moved on from hybrid tech to full electric.

Wait and see what happens with the Chesterfield fleet over the next few years. I’m not going to say any more than that as it may or may not happen.

Are such challenges recent, or were they just easier to handle in the dim and distant past? For example, where I grew up one local service was shared between two different operators across three depots and the arrangement seemed to work well.
Shared routes never work well in my experience, @M803UYA hits the nail on the head with many of the issues.

A decent proportion of those run services in to Sheffield, including from the next timetable change one run that doesn't leave the city boundary. I don't believe any Sheffield-based buses come out to Chesterfield, thus my slightly flippant comment about it being an out-station.
The primary flow of people is from the town to the city so it makes sense for the cross boundary bus routes to be based in the town. An out-station is an operating base which relies on another larger depot for maintenance, supervision and management support.

Was recently on trial at First South Yorkshire at Olive Grove, did 51 from Lodge Moor to Charnock.
Also had a recent loan spell at East Yorkshire based in Hull predominantly working on the 66 service to Hessle but also did at least one 23 from Hull to Beverley

There are 8 brand new Enviro 400 MMC now in service from Holbrook depot, mainly on 52 & 120. These are all on YX73 plates, the fleet numbers are: 11647, 11648, 11649, 11697, 11703, 11705, 11706 & 11707. There will be more introduced, they have grey covered e-leather high backed seats, not facing at rear upstairs.

The ex Manchester/Wigan Enviro 300’s are starting to enter service at Barnsley & Chesterfield, all are entering in Local livery with ones in Beachball being repainted before entering service.

Do you know if the new 400 MMCs at Holbrook depot have the audio visual announcements feature enabled for any services?

Buses across South Yorkshire and Chesterfield are to change this weekend:
South Yorkshire:

Changes to buses in South Yorkshire

From Sunday 29th October buses across South Yorkshire are changing

We’ve been working closely with SYMCA (the Mayoral Combined Authority) for South Yorkshire on changes to some services following changing customer travel habits and reduced funding from SYMCA to run evening and weekend services.
For some journeys, the number of customers using them is very low and the cost of running buses has risen significantly meaning they no longer cover their costs to run.
We’ve worked hard to make improvements to services where possible with most timetables changing to improve punctuality. Where we will no longer be running evening and weekend services, another operator will be taking over ensuring communities remain connected though the timetable may be different.

Please read the list below to check if your service is affected. Click on the service names below for timetable information.

Where there isn't a timetable available and for full details of all of the changes in South Yorkshire, please visit TravelSouthYorkshire.com

Chesterfield:

Changes to buses in Chesterfield

From Sunday 29 October 2023 we are making changes to our buses across Chesterfield and Derbyshire.

The frequency of some routes has been increased and some routes have been extended, providing new links. Many of these changes have been made possible by funding from Derbyshire County Council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.
We have also had to reduce or remove a very small number of routes as the number of people using them has fallen but the cost of running the buses has risen significantly.
We’ve worked very hard to try to ensure the impact of these changes is as small as possible for local communities but unfortunately some changes were needed to allow us to continue to provide a sustainable network.

Please read the list below to check if your service is affected. Click on the service numbers to view the new timetables.

1/1a Newbold – Chesterfield – Bolsover - Langwith

The timetable will change to improve punctuality.
The 1a has been rerouted to serve Markham Vale Industrial Estate, running via Enterprise Way and Markham Lane.

2/2a/2b Walton – Chesterfield – Green Farm

These buses will no longer run and will be replaced by services 5, 90 and 90a.

5 Newbold – Chesterfield Town Centre

Monday to Saturday daytime buses will be extended across Chesterfield to serve Green Farm, using the current 2a route. Buses will run hourly. Buses will no longer run via Elder Way and instead will use Rose Hill, Knifesmithgate and Cavendish Street.
On Sundays, the 5 will continue to run between Chesterfield and Newbold only.

15 Dronfield – Marsh Lane – Chesterfield Town Centre

The timetable will change to improve punctuality.

16 Dronfield – Chesterfield Town Centre - Broomfield

The timetable will change to improve punctuality.

25 Chesterfield - New Whittington

On Monday to Saturday daytimes, buses will run every 30 minutes instead of every hour with more early morning journeys introduced. Sunday daytime journeys are introduced, replacing the 25a. The timetable will also change to improve punctuality.

25a Chesterfield - New Whittington

This service is replaced by additional 25 buses (see above).

39 Grangewood – Chesterfield Town Centre – Holme Hall

Later daily evening journeys will be introduced.
The early morning timetable will be changed to improve connections with service 1/1a for passengers travelling to Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

43 Chesterfield – Dronfield – Sheffield

On Monday to Saturday daytimes, buses will run every 30 minutes. Changes are also made to improve punctuality.
43a Sheffield – Lowedges
New service running hourly, Monday to Saturday daytimes, between Sheffield and Lowedges via Lowedges Road, Meadowhead, Woodseats and Heeley.

44 Chesterfield – Dronfield – Sheffield

Evening and Sunday journeys that start/end at Dronfield will be extended to/from Chesterfield. Timetable changes will also be made to improve punctuality.

48 Clay Cross - Heath - Chesterfield - Brampton

We will be taking over the 48 which runs from Clay Cross to Brampton from Hulleys of Baslow.

49 Clay Cross - Heath - Clowne

We will be taking over the 49 which runs from Clay Cross to Clowne from Hulleys of Baslow.

50 Chesterfield - Eckington - Sheffield

On Monday to Saturday daytimes, the service will be extended from Birk Hill Estate to Chesterfield. To reduce journey times, the route will change to serve West Street rather than Ravencar Road and will run via Sheffield Road instead of Windmill Greenway. The timetable will also be changed to improve punctuality.

50a Chesterfield - Eckington - Sheffield

To reduce journey times the bus will run direct along High Street in Old Whittington and will no longer serve Burnbridge Road, Ashcroft Drive and Station Lane.
With the 25, 50 and 50a there will now be 4 buses an hour between New Whittington and Chesterfield during Monday to Saturday daytimes.

51/51a Danesmoor – Chesterfield

The timetable will change to improve punctuality. Evening journeys on the 51a are replaced by later journeys on the 39 and 51.

54/54a Clay Cross – Chesterfield

On Monday to Saturday daytimes buses will run every 15 minutes. Evening buses will run hourly.

74/74a Chesterfield – Duckmanton/Mastin Moor

On Monday to Saturday daytimes, the 74 will run hourly and no longer serve Duckmanton or Poolsbrook (please see 90/90a for replacement). The 74 will instead run to Mastin Moor Community Centre and Woodthorpe with a revised timetable to improve punctuality. Some evening journeys will be replaced by service 77a.
Services 74/74a will provide a combined half hourly frequency between Chesterfield, Inkersall and Staveley on Monday to Saturday daytimes.

77/77a Chesterfield – Worksop

The timetable will change to improve punctuality. The Monday to Saturday bus at 18:23 hrs from Chesterfield will run as a service 77a.

80/80a Chesterfield - Sheffield

The service will no longer be run by Stagecoach. Unfortunately low numbers of people using the bus but increasing costs to run the buses mean that the service is no longer able to cover its costs.
We have worked closely with Derbyshire County Council to find a solution that will keep the community connected. Hulley’s of Baslow will provide a partial replacement service 80/80a between Chesterfield and Crystal Peaks.

90 Walton – Chesterfield – Cresswell

The 90 will be extended beyond Staveley to provide new links to Markham Vale (every 30 minutes) and Clowne and Creswell (every hour). The route is also changed in Walton to provide a replacement for buses 2/2a.
We are also introducing services 90a and 90b. Please read below to check which service you should use for your journey.
Please note that within the Yew Tree Estate (Walton Back Lane) the 90 becomes the 90a and the 90a becomes the 90 but can stay on the bus to travel to the stop you want.

Some things I have seen recently:

All the new Enviro 400 MMC are now in service from Holbrook depot, this has resulted in some of the E400 Hybrids have moved to Chesterfield including 12170 & 12175.

A number of the Enviro 200 MMC at Holbrook have moved to Barnsley, some of these are 37603, 37610, 37611.

Enviro 200 MMC 37608 has had the Buses for Sheffield branding removed & has been branded as Merry Christmas from Stagecoach. It remains in Beachball with a Reindeer & Sleigh imagining on the sides with the interior grab bar’s covered in Tinsel.

MAN Enviro 300 22560 has become a Driver Training Vehicle & is in the new blue style training livery.

The 50/50a service between Sheffield & Chesterfield via Eckington is no longer a guaranteed Gold route as it inter works with 43, 43a & 44.

The 50/50a hasn't been a Gold branded service for some time as following customer feedback they removed the limited stop status therefore making it a normal local bus, however the Gold spec deckers did continue to appear on some trips, I imagine less so now the PVR of the X17 Gold has increased with the route extension to Wirksworth.

With the new E400MMCs at Holbrook, the 25 is now a fully double deck operation (except for the odd E200 turning up to cover deckers off for maintenance). The 25 is mostly Hybrids cascaded from the 52/120 which is now mostly new buses, however the odd MMC does turn up, especially on Sundays. I note the next stop announcements do not yet work and the displays just show the date and time. The announcements did work on the 25 on the E200MMCs.

A red/black coloured Yutong Decker Demonstrator is on loan at Ecclesfield depot registered YD73 FTP. It is using the ticket machine of Scania E400 15716.

Scania E400 15718 has entered service at Chesterfield depot converted to part open top for use on Peak Explorer.

I don't know whether it's the same one that First hired in the area for route 51.

Either way, Stagecoach may have been curious to try one out as a result, or in case they decide to order some to work alongside the forthcoming Yutong single-decks.

Shared routes never work well in my experience, @M803UYA hits the nail on the head with many of the issues.
I'm relatively surprised after all this time of shared routes in Sheffield that both Stagecoach and First continue to joint-operate the routes. It's even more surprising that both companies are responsible for timetabling and communication to co-ordinate timings when (I believe) SYPTE are the responsible party for initially merging both operators onto one route (i.e. 52, 120). Surely the resources would be better used for all companies to operate their own routes, enabling more areas to be covered and resources being used on other routes where they may not be wholly available at present (particularly due to driver shortages)?

There is a lot of sense in what you say. At some point the shared routes will be reviewed but it will need to be lead by SYMCA (South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority).

The main issue for me is the confusion it causes for passengers, mainly those not from the area. The 120 is a prime example, with First covering Fulwood - Crystal Peaks and yourselves (Stagecoach) running Ranmoor - Halfway during the day Mon-Sat. I presume the reason is due to timings, however to me this indicates the route is too long and should be split anyhow.

Definitely will be interesting if/when they are reviewed and what decisions SYMCA and operators come to.

The issue this might have is if this is done on 120 & also on 52/52a. The 52/52a have different terminus points at Woodhouse & the routes are quite different after Handsworth.

As a result of Storm Pia today there was significant disruption to the X17 service particularly on the exposed section between Chesterfield & Matlock via Kelstedge. A number of E400 Scania’s & E400 MMC were swapped over at Chesterfield for Enviro 200 & 300 versions on Dart chassis.

I saw a Scania climbing up into Wirksworth town centre, It was going that slowly and swaying from side to side. It was a sight to see. I dread to think what Slack Hill would be like, as you said.

At least they’re a bit easier to differentiate the different termini having slightly different route numbers in the first place

Does anyone know what the situation with the Yutongs for Chesterfield is, please? I don't recall hearing anything about them for a while.

Stagecoach in Sheffield has just introduced a new fleet of ADL E400MMC buses. (Of course, they are still running the same utterly diabolical service, but at least passengers might now get to sit on a bus, in slow-moving traffic and assuming it actually bothers turning up, which is nice and modern). Are any other new vehicles on order at the moment for operators in the Sheffield area?

We usually buy new vehicles for specific routes. As I said above the MAN powered E300's are due for withdrawal shortly. E200's have several years to go. Solo's - nothing confirmed yet but see what happens.
Given that last year was the first time the Peak Explorer ran, maybe for summer 2024 Stagecoach could look at running something from Chesterfield and Buxton to Holmfirth and Huddersfield with the Solo's (ideal for such a route), which in turn could link up with a 2024 edition of the Peak Explorer.

There are 4 electric BYDs for Sheffield but it's unknown which operator.
37606, 37612 & 37613 are the 3 remaining ex Holbrook MMCs to be repainted and transferred but are currently in use at Chesterfield.

Is Stagecoach experiencing a shortage of single-deck vehicles in Sheffield at the moment? Double deckers have been cropping up on a few journeys on the 10/10A lately which is certainly overkill for the number of passengers typically seen on those routes. I have also been seeing what feels like more double deckers than usual on other routes such as the 88, though that might be my imagination.
