In other TRU news, we "railway neighbours" in the centre of Leeds have received a letter informing us of a new compound setup. Typically, the letter doesn't say *where* the compound will be, but there will be de-vegetation, cable troughing and other work during June from Armley (TJC3 196m 440yds) to a point just beyond Neville Hill (HUL4 18m 550yds).

Batley - Former Adwalton line at Lady Anne crossing.

Electrical cabinet installed overnight and the new line side fencing being installed today.

The stepped access formwork is a slow burn. Looks very complicated to install and set up.

Things may have been updated, but as far as I'm aware the plan is still for the current P1 & P4 to become the up and down fast platforms respectively and be numbered as platforms 2 & 3.

It wouldn't be impossible to operate a through service between Deighton (and beyond) towards Lockwood, as it isn't today either... but it would involve a capacity-eating conflict.
From February's Modern Railways; they have "fast" lines as they are now, rather than the way I thought they would be (in my mind I equate "fast" with "straight").

If that's the official plan now, it's a big mistake unless there's a good reason for it I'm not aware of. You're introducing conflicting moves in the throat that don't need to happen, and presumably enforcing slower entry and exit speeds for down fast services due to the curvature into current platform 8/future platform 4.
The only positive I can see is that it would make operating through services towards Sheffield slightly easier, though the trackwork still has some rather hair-raising crossovers at the Manchester end of the station.

You've removed conflicts at Ravensthorpe and Mirfield, which means the conflicts at the Manchester end of Hudds station can be timetable to work without too much dependency.

I think the diagram also slightly misleads as the through line in grey between the lines in pink does remain.

Those were being removed anyway- what's being discussed is simply which platform at Huddersfield is for down fast services and which is for the down slows. The plan as shown introduces conflicts that don't need to be there.

The track layout as depicted at least doesn't set that in stone.

Of course, but the point is that the conflicts that have been introduced at Huddersfield can be accommodated in the timetable, and part of the reason for that is that they don't have to also time round conflicts at, say, Ravensthorpe. Fundamentally, if you want to run more trains you need more track and if you have more tracks you will inevitably introduce more conflicts unless you spend very, very large amounts of money.

But the platform use as originally proposed still has fewer conflicts than the one posted above. Some conflicts are inevitable as you say, but the ones being introduced are avoidable.

Do we have confirmed detailed design for the platforms yet? I can't remember what stage the planning applications are at.

Also, we're massively off topic from Sheff Vic
I'm not sure- as things stand the only source for this current update is the article in Modern Railways.

Edit: thanks to the mods for moving the errant posts to this thread.

None technically. From what I’ve seen the advantage is flexibility. What Modern Railways have published is pretty much as expected.

Also, separate to this. All the WYCA funded stations aren’t technically part of TRU.

A feature I like in the layout is the 'right turn lane' platform (#4) for eastbound fasts. This distributes the fast/slow crossing and merge conflicts over both ends of the station, which should help to make them more manageable in both timetable planning and realtime operations.
The following video shows my impression of the station layout as featured in the Modern Railways February issue, detailed with representative signalling and animated with some possible traffic patterns:
I made a small change to the MR layout in another variant of this simulation which can be found in the following speculative post (add link here)

Press release

Passengers urged to plan ahead as second phase of significant upgrades at Morley approaches

Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is reminding passengers travelling along the rail line between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York to plan their journeys ahead of time, as nine days of major upgrades are due to take place from 17-25 June 2023 at Morley station.

Over nine days, engineers working on the multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade will start to demolish the old platforms, construct new ones, realign tracks and activate a track turn-back (which allows trains to turn around) and re-control signals to Network Rail’s rail operating centre in York.

For the majority of the nine days, railway diversionary routes as well as rail replacement buses will keep passengers moving, however, there will be significant impact over the first two days of the upgrades (17-18) as engineers complete additional work in Huddersfield, affecting the main diversionary route. During this time, no trains will run between Huddersfield and Leeds and all services will be replaced by buses.

Took hudds train to slaithwaite this evening. Spotted a couple of what I think are concrete signal bases on right hand side of track. They are both new. One was I think after the branch to Barnsley, the other near a bridge. Sorry for poor locational advice. Any clues what they are about?

Batley - Former Adwalton line at Lady Anne crossing.

Still fitting the new fence posts at the side of the up Huddersfield line. Additionally, a smaller fence post is also being fitted against the graded Adwalton embankment from Lady Anne crossing to the new footbridge.

First two photos are from Rutland Road looking towards Lady Anne crossing. The last picture shows the partial rebuild of the stone abutment.

IMG_4443.jpegIMG_4445.jpegIMG_4447.jpegIMG_4446.jpeg

New Footbridge- Adwalton Embankment.

The new stepped access is taking shape with the lower portion of the steps now poured. The formation of the new footpath is taking shape as it passes under the new footbridge and then cuts back on its self on a higher level - last photo.

This is an impressive photo record you're creating. It has been a substantial engineering exercise.

My thoughts exactly too. Thanks again to @Batley Lad

Thanks to you both. The idea was to capture the changing landscape around Batley and Lady Anne crossing during any TRU works and progress.

With the well used Lady Anne crossing soon to disappear forever, the opportunity to photograph its last fling as a crossing was something I’ve tried to capture.

The scale of the work was a happy bonus as I didn’t expect this continuous level of civil engineering to be so involved. The simple words of closing a foot crossing and installing a new footbridge don’t do the amount of work justice!

Batley - Former Adwalton line at Lady Anne crossing.

Just updating an earlier post - I think the second set of posts going in at the side of new footpath is for a handrail.

More of the foundations for the rebuilding of the drystone walls either side of new footbridge started.

And more of the formwork for the stepped access started -Adwalton embankment.

An OLE portal is installed on Dukinfield (East/West) Viaduct. That's the first one on the viaducts (including Ashton 1 and 2) between Guide Bridge and Stalybridge. It was sitting on the concrete bases installed within the Viaduct wall.

Ashton 1 and 2 Portals will be fixed to the outside of the Viaduct, remembering the artists impression and Network Rail planning permission.

Batley - Former Adwalton line at Lady Anne crossing.

A change of pace around the works with a marked difference in what work is being carried out. The former abutment wall now has a cap stone in situ and the new footpath has kerb edging placed on either side.

The new footpath handrail is progressing and making its way up the newly formed slope and towards the footbridge.

Starting to reinstate the drystone walls on either side of the footbridge on the Rutland Road entrance.

On the opposite side and on the former Adwalton embankment a layer of topsoil is being applied to the newly formed slopes here.

Drystone walling is quite an art (even if it is actually mortared). I wonder if they have specialists doing this?

I’ve not noticed a particular company associated with the drystone wall works, but the workmanship looks very good.

Your correct in that the wall middle is mortared with the mortar recessed from the wall face to give an illusion of a drystone wall.

There are some additional features of the entrance to the footbridge off Rutland road that I’ve not posted the pictures for…. I thought I would post them when the entrance is fully completed.

I take it they're putting up the remaining wires and gantries overnight this week on the stalybridge line?

The new signals between Dewsbury and Morley are being plated 'SL'.

As Network Rail like using line of route signal plate identifiers (usually) for new schemes, what would SL be for?

Stalybridge - Leeds
Slaithwaite - Leeds
Springwood Jn - Leeds

If it's any of those it'll be the first, I'd imagine. Can't see Slaithwaite being a boundary between workstations, and if Springwood junction was one they'd surely just call it Huddersfield.

Yes I agree likely to be the first, In the not too distant future Huddersfield work station at York ROC will control from just west of the current Diggle Junction box to location between Ravensthorpe and Dewsbury where Leeds West takes over
