How many single person operated signal boxes are still in operation in and around London?
Upper Holloway and S. Tottenham were still in use 2 years ago as was Acton Canal Wharf; there is also the 'gate box' at Charlton Lane Crossing SE 7.Greenford, Acton Wells, Neasden Jn, the Willesden boxes, Dudding Hill. Are Upper Holloway and South Tottenham still going? doubt there are many more.
Not to forget Acton Canal Wharf. Yes, both still in use. The North London Line and its fringes have an incredible array of different signal boxes.Greenford, Acton Wells, Neasden Jn, the Willesden boxes, Dudding Hill. Are Upper Holloway and South Tottenham still going? doubt there are many more.
I don’t know about what happened to Charlton Lane but the others are still with us. The closest single crewed box to Charing X is Whitechapel (District Line) I believe (not sure how many people work in the W&C control room at once)Upper Holloway and S. No such box listed in Network Rail’s Compendium of Signal Box Opening Times, which is believed to date from February this year. The Ground Frame between roads 43 and 44 (?) may still be in use.Clapham Junction Yard
Possibly because it’s operated by SWR. It’s an NX panel with routes up to the washer, many slotted routes to both the Main and Windsor sides and a train describer terminal. Can’t remember the road numbers off the top of my head but, whilst it’s not VSC, it’s pretty big for a ground frame. No such box listed in Network Rail’s Compendium of Signal Box Opening Times, which is believed to date from February this year.
