What's the line?

Was wondering if anyone with local Birmingham knowledge could help me.

I live in Winson Green, Birmingham. With regards to railway lines running through here there's the Snow Hill route with the Midland Metro adjacent to it, but next to that line is an electrified line, what is this?

I'm only asking because I've just seen a Pendolino passing through as I was driving under the bridge, I've never personally seen one on this line before!

Any help appreciated.

Well you would know if its electrified line for pendolio it will be OHL or maybe you could have seen a voyager

Nope, it's was definitely a Pendolino. Unless they've brought out a 9 car Voyager overnight :P

National rail enquires are saying there are delays between Birmingham New Street and Wolverhampton due to a problem with lineside equipment at Sandwell & Dudley, and looking at google maps it is a link to the Walsall line avoiding Perry Barr

Don't the semi-fasts from Birmingham to Walsall use that line?

I'm sure they used to go that way when I lived in the Midlands.

Is therefore logical that the line up through Bescot and onto Wolverhampton could be used for Virgin diversions.

If it's the line I'm thinking of then the Rugeley TV to New Street (via Walsall) services use it.

I seen a L.M 170 which looked like it was in passenger service earlier, which would make sense.

I take it you live near this crossover, then. The electrified line is the one heading SW to NE, and it is used as a diversionary route for Birmingham to Wolverhampton.

I'm sure some Rugeley - New Street trains ran via Soho on the way and Aston on the way back?

Surely any service from New St to Walsall/Rugeley TV that isn't calling at Aston goes that way? I'm sure they used to. Should be plenty of chance to take a trip along it.

Only the return journey to New St goes that way if I recall.

Believe there is an early morning/late night ATW service that uses this daily, not sure on Virgin, the last service of the (week)day to WVH was via Aston last Thursday but this puts it in reverse formation for the next day so perhaps sometimes it's via Soho too.

The last XC Reading to Birmingham does a loop Inter–Stechford–Aston–Bescot–Soho–New Street (route knowledge, also means the driver doesn't have to change ends to take it back to Burton, ensuring a speedy knock-off )
