Can anyone advise me whether it is legally required to some sort of door locks on trains on heritage railways within the UK operations? I know it's required on passenger trains (west coast etc) but was wondering about preserved railways?

And if it were enforced I guess we would kiss goodbye to many preserved railways providing passenger rides as the cost would be prohibitive.

yeh, imagine swapping M1s for Mk3s behind a hunslet or jinty:D

There was an incident on the NVR with a young child falling out of one of their continentals but even the report didnt reccomend central locking, just making the locks harder to open from the inside

Lets hope not, ever. Part of the joy for many people (including myself) :) is a quick peek out of the window to enjoy the sights and sounds on a preserved line! Fond memories of skirting along the North Wales coast as a teenager head out of DMU/37/HST at speed. Fantastic!

Just a little care & attention for the stray branches is required

Central Door Locking would not affect the operation of the drop lights, purely preventing doors being opened when the train is in motion - which is very rare.

I would hope that this would never become a requirement. The implications of retro-fitting CDL to heritage stock is not only a technical headache, but hugely costly from both an implementation and maintenance aspect.

Ha Ha yes, dont think ive ever done it at that speed dude :)

I have! :D Wearing glasses helps, but I try to avoid it, since leaning out too far on the ECML could have adverse consequences.

Back on the subject, CDL on MkIs is possible, it was done with 1499 and 1498 for the Lymington service, but it's probably expensive. For older coaches, it wouldn't just be difficult, it would affect the character of the coach and probably not be good for historical purposes.

The incidents that have occurred on heritage railways recently are in other areas - the ORR & RAIB are concentrating on competence and safety management systems at the moment. Also the regulators understand very well what the financial implications would be and there seems little benefit in changing the rules on CDL when there have been very few incidents relating to doors being opened while vehicles are moving.

If I recall correctly I think those particular carriages had a peculiar (in the UK anyway) design much like a handle on internal house door that was relatively easy to open, probably wouldn't apply to the majority of UK based rolling stock.

I think MkIIIs had something similar early on, but they were removed and plated over because of a similar incident. CDL came later, but the internal handles never reappeared, presumably in case this failed. The internal door catches on MkIs are rather different.

Anyone remember seeing signs like this?

There is actually two handles. One to lock/unlock the door and one to open the door.
