That is the thing with it, London - Edinburgh = 1 meal
Stevenage - Berwick = 2 meals

If you go by the 1 meal per train rule.

Exactly. It woudl be quite funny to see how many breakfasts you could possibly have in one day on one single ticket (anyone up for a challenge?).

If you managed three it may well equate to a decent "fill" and set you up for the day:lol:

First open

0550 London - Grantham 72 mins
0725 London - darlington 100 mins
0921 Darlington - Edinburgh.

3 breakfasts.

I think the only way to better that is the 0830 heading to Aberdeen changing at Newark, York and Edinburgh but I suspect you would get nothing between Newark and York

Most full meals = 2

1730 London - York and change at York for Edinburgh.

Don't think it is worth the hastle myself.

A comedy of errors tonight.

Two of us at a table asked for G&Ts, the second miniature was dropped on the table and a teacloth had to be fetched from the kitchen to mop up. Another gin was provided and then shortly after a fourth was provided. Doubles all round!

Until the Guard came through & knocked over that miniature and the teacloth was in action again. You couldn't make it up!

would be fun trying it though! Incidentally welcome back Failed unit. You were missed!

Thanks, it is a little while since I had the pleasure of East Coast, not since Eliane left to be honest.

Because I am sad, I have done a quick look at what I think is the most free food you can get by assuming you will get it on the 70 minutes rule. Connections in the minimum time.

0445 Newcastle - York
0630 York - Peterborough
0758 Peterborough - York
1001 York - Peterborough
1151 Peterborough - Leeds (can't get off at Wakefield as it is only 69 mins)
1345 Leeds - Peterborough
1516 Peterborough - York
1655 York - London Kings Cross
1903 London Kings Cross - Doncaster (the 1930 could be used legally)
2116 Doncaster - London
2330 London - Leeds

So that is 11.

I wonder if I would still be hungry

That's if you are honest - the other day I'd eaten mine by Darlington (30 mins), so could have got off there and got on the next service to have another breakfast.

I wonder if splitting tickets is also against the spirit of the free offer?
Anyway I am shortly going to get more than the value of the ticket in freebies - time to use the points again :)

That, or specifying "via Retford" to put you on the KGX-YRK stopper to get you double/triple what you'd get on a regular KGX-EDB run!

OK, so I am booked in 1st on the Aberdeen to London King's Cross 14:50 this Monday (26th). The timetable says "All day offer", which I understand to be sandwiches etc. This is a 7.5 hour journey covering the main meal times. What should I expect? And will I be entitled to more than one serving considering the journey time? Or, do I need to be "stocking up" from M&S prior to boarding in order to avoid "famine" en route

I belive from earlier discussions here that if you board before Edniburgh then you do get 2 chances, however boarding at Haymarket and thus Waverly does not as I unfortunately discovered.

The All Day Offer includes hot options like fish pie and chips or jacket potato.

You should get two servings on that journey, as the crew will change probably at Edinburgh or Newcastle.

When I caught the 14.50 ex Aberdeen at Dundee (16.04) a few months back, I was offered food soon after Dundee, Edinburgh, Newcastle and York. I'd had a big lunch so only took up the offer once, but someone across from me ate twice.

I have had two servings of food on a NCL-KGX fast service (one hot, one cold) - it is simply down to the crew in most instances it seems. Note that this was also accompanied by only two runs of the cold drinks trolley in three hours, even in spite of the 1/2 hr delay.

I've got what I consider to be a very cheap advance first next Tues on the 1604 Dundee-Donny (£49). Do I still get same service, or is there a 'first pleb' section?

(Please don't anybody spoil it by saying I could have got it for £18.50 by splitting at Inverkeithing and Pegswood)!

Everyone in First gets the same service (as long as you're travelling over 70 minutes), whatever the price paid for one's ticket.

A first class ticket is a first class ticket as long as your journey is timetabled to take more than 70 minutes (which yours is) you should get the full whack.

Just in case you're wondering what the portions are like - they haven't changed. Here's my breakfast this morning on 1S07:

In all honesty I'm still hungry, and I'm not due at my destination for another three hours plus.

It's a great shame because the staff are very pleasant and helpful. If only the portions were reasonable I'd be very happy. It's disappointing to see such obvious cost-cutting. Three mushrooms? A spoonful of scrambled egg? Really?

This really is a far cry from FGW's Travelling Chef which is a superior offering in every way. I don't mind paying the tenner for a decent breakfast provided I get a decent portion.

I would however agree with what DaveNewcastle has said on the subject: Sit in Coach K. It's nearest the kitchen, it's spacious and quiet, and not rammed with reservations like M and L.

Have you thought of doing an "Oliver Twist" and asking for more - further supplies must be available as from my experience a lot of people opt out of the "fry up":p

This is the bit I don't understand. I know that passengers' expectations need to be managed (if they get a massive plate of food every time, they will be very disappointed on very busy services where the portions have to be made a bit smaller). However I can't see what's wrong with 'seconds' to use up the surplus supplies (especially after the last stop that qualifies for a meal has been and all orders taken). It just needs to be marketed as a one-off rather than a permanent expectation.

Probably a case of the staff "mopping up the leftovers"

What they could do is give you a little order card to fill out what you would like (quantities) - that would save wastage :p

Havn't done breakfast yet, but as I expected it looks like one to avoid - or at least provide your own.

The removal of the tomato is required, with the addition of another sausage and a couple of bits of BP :p

Bring your own toaster if you want more than one slice !!!

It looks fine to me. I'd eat it with pleasure. To me it's plenty, if you're eating it as is intended, ie as a breakfast.

What's wrong with the tomato? That can stay; just add a piece of black pudding.

Where's the rest of your breakfast gone???

This is a light breakfast I had the other day.
