I am now on a Manchester-Southampton Cental XC voyager service. The Wifi is available but not free. When did they start to introduce charges on their wifi? I remember that only one set of their trains has wifi installed? And it was free. How many trains have they equipped with wifi so far? There were some news saying they are going to install wifi on all their fleets.

Thanks!

No idea bt on most TOCS it's only free on first class.

In fact its been very rare for me to find a Voyager with WIFI down here.

True, I have travelled 10+ times in the recent month. This is the only one with wifi.

I've been quite lucky with getting the wifi sets then. Obviously all the XC HSTs, plus the couple of voyagers I've had in the past month or so. Thing is, I can never get it to work! My phone always connects, says that I'm on 'CrossCountry wifi', but when push comes to shove and I try to load a webpage, without fail it does nothing.

Does it actually work for anybody else, or am I just unlucky somehow?

Presumably it was free while they tested the system on 220030. They are probably quietly rolling it out and won't promote it until the whole fleet is ready.

Their charge So far seems very reasonable compared to virgin's, hope XC would keep it after rolling out on their whole fleet.

I had the same experience on Chiltern Railways 168 104 (sorry to go off topic somewhat)
Where when you try and load a page, it sends you back to the home page, are the HSTs like this? And do you get free wi-fi on standard and first class?

I've noticed that nationalrail.co.uk, livedepartureboards.co.uk and crosscountrytrains.co.uk (and all subdomains and pages on these domains) are free of charge on the XC WiFi.

Not seen many crosscountry 220 or 221s with wifi yet. Anybody know when the whole fleet is due to be fitted out?

The whole fleet was DUE to be fitted out ages ago - it was a franchise commitment. XC have dragged their feet and been warned about the lack of wifi by the DFT. When the fleet is ACTUALLY fitted out is a good question, but in my experience of their Voyagers and the ongoing lack of wifi, progress is painfully slow (EMT managed to fit out their Meridian fleet fairly quickly so I've no idea why XC seem to be taking it so slowy).

It's a bit like some of their trains - there's a difference between when they're DUE to arrive and when they ACTUALLY arrive.

So someone could report XC about their lack of wi-fi capabilities and the DFT would take action against them?

Fitment to the whole fleet is due to be completed by September 2012. Once complete the option of pre-purchasing wifi access bundled with ticket purchase may be made available with a possible discount.

You never know, they may even run a promotion of some sort to launch it when ready.
