Penalties it is.

"Portugal have won both of their Shoot-Outs in major competitions, but they were against England so maybe they should be discounted."

- Gary Lineker

How true  They still manage an England reference though...

Lucky penalty by Fabregas... Ronaldo should have taken one though...

He would have, providing Fabregas had missed!

Strange tactic by Portugal, you really need to use your "banker" no later than the third penalty just in case. Otherwise, that happens.

But you really need someone able to handle the pressure to take the last penalty as it will be to either win or stay in the match. If Ronaldo had taken an earlier penalty you'd then have Alves with even more pressure having to take the last one.

Switch things round then. Have Alves go second (the position that matters the least), and then Ronaldo, Pepe and Nani after him. Bit late now though, and even though it's almost 0300 in Donetsk I bet he's still awake being haunted by his miss now...

I'm not sure what I enjoyed more, Terry missing in Moscow when he was desperate for the glory, or Ronaldo not getting to take one at all.

Definitely Moscow for me. It put him and Chelsea in their place - one and for all (they haven't been the same force since).

Until last month anyway :(

No contest!

Hope this surge protector works if needed

In my opinion... I don't even know how Portugal managed to get into the final rounds!

Given that this team lost against Turkey by 3 -1 and had an horrible display during the qualification and friendly matches, how could anyone expect it would make into the finals?

The Portuguese defence was most of the times hanging around and making mistakes, the centres couldn't make a successful childish pass several times, and the forward players... just too much trust in Ronaldo, or too much lucky shooting when they decided to do the job themselves (including that guy).

Spain wasn't that better yesterday. Portugal had everything to win, but still manage to ruin such a good game. At last they went back home! (Or to their respective clubs).

Anyway, I just hope the finals get to be a much more pleasant match to watch. :)

I hope you mean a good game on paper ;). The actual game was dire, it's pretty much the first game I turned off in disgust before half time

Well that was unexpected. I'm going to side wit Italy though, can't stand the poncy Spanish who dive and try to get players booked and even when they stay on their feet what the commentators fapping over them fail to realise is that they do make 27 passes but get nowhere

Seconded - The Italians were entertaining with chaotic defending and exciting attacking :p

Just imagine how embarrassing it would have been if the unimaginable had happened and it was England getting the "run-around" from Spain in the final. At least, the "redtops" have recently stopped publishing the views that England have "world-class" players, which was always an embarrassing statement to put into print. Mind you, I wonder, now it is "inquest" time in the media, will they be leading with stories such as "Rooney to blame for not progressing to the later stages".... or ...." 'Arry would have made all the difference".....

As long as people still buy a newspaper, they'll still churn out that stuff to fill pages.

As I don't buy papers and get my news online, I skip most of the drivel and only get to hear about the nonsense when it gets quoted on forums like this!!

"Imagine" is the correct turn of phrase

I don't want to read made up or inaccurate stories in the so called (news)papers. That is why they are called 'stories'. This applies to 'quality', 'mid market' or 'tabloid'. I would have thought that the last year has taught everybody that these publications should be boycotted and put out of business.

To be fair though Paul - we do have some 'World class' players. Its just that they can never seem to play together.

Interestingly enough out of both the teams starting line ups last night they each only had one player who plies his trade in the Premier League.

Ahem. *Cough*.

I was wrong on the final. Yet not on every other game they played.

Just like a postman, Mr Balotelli didn't deliver on Sunday either.

I don't think that is a fair comment to make. Balotelli didn't have the service as the Spanish team completely neutralised Italy's creative players. Despite that, the first half was quite an even game in my opinion, just 2 moments of magic seperated the teams.

It wasn't until Italy went down to 10 men through injury that the Spanish started dominating completely.

This is going to sound mean, but a lot like Mr C Ronaldo, I didn't want him specifically to win. I cannot stand the man, I find him repulsive, arrogant and smug; he quite clearly shows how much tosh he speaks with his postman comment (with what he did against Germany), and that's before the acts of thuggery he showed against Alex Song and Scott Parker last season. He is a more talented Joey Barton in my eyes, pure and simple. He doesn't deserve an ounce of success on that scale until he changes his ways.

It's a different approach to the game, and one which is undeniably successful.
To use a cricketing analogy, Spain are like Chris Tavare, happy to play everything on its merits, and to strike when there's an opportunity.

I prefer to just get facts and make up my own mind. I don't need to read as story written with a particular slant to suit the readership (or the political views of the paper).

If I'm reading a comment piece or a feature, fair enough, but when a paper starts off by reporting something in a positive or negative way depending on its agenda, I really do switch off.

When I travel, I will often pick up a Daily Mail purely to provide entertainment from reading stories in a 'did they really just write this?' way. Most of the reason the Mail Online gets so much traffic from people doing the same!

I don't buy newspapers because I don't wish to fund the drivel, or worse lies, that they churn out everyday. If I had a million pounds Murdoch and others wouldn't get a penny of it.

TV and radio are far more regulated though, at least in this country. The TV news can't just make up stuff like a newspaper.
