Hi All,

Can I have a bit of routing/break of journey advice please? This Friday, I want to travel home from Euston to Macclesfield, off peak around 2pm. Have YP Railcard. On Saturday, I want to go to Birmingham New Street to see friends for a night out, and then on Sunday, travel back from Birmingham New Street to Euston. From my research, the simplest/cheapest option is a Euston to Macclesfield return with a Railcard, £47.65, travelling EUS-MACC directly, but going back via Birmingham, and breaking the journey back overnight in Bham. Is this valid? What are the logistics for breaking the journey? Should I get the ticket endorsed by a gate line staff member on Saturday, stating that I'm breaking the journey?

Thanks for any advice :)

Yes that is valid, as Birmingham is on a permitted route from London to Macclesfield and break of journey is always allowed on the return portion of Off-Peak Returns.

You don't need to have your ticket endorsed when breaking journey, although you may wish to.

On a similar note, is an overnight break of journey permitted on the return portion of a SailRail ticket to Dublin?

I'm guessing not as they are single tickets? Trying to figure out a way round the sheer length of the journey to/from the Westcountry.

An overnight stop is not a break of journey when you cannot reasonably complete your journey within one day.
National Rail Conditions of Carriage

13. For the purposes of this Condition and Condition 11, you will be treated as breaking your journey if you leave a Train Company’s or Rail Service Company’s stations after you start your journey other than to:
(i) join a train at another station, or
(ii) stay in overnight accommodation when you cannot reasonably complete your journey within one day, or
(iii) follow any instructions given by a member of a Train Company’s or Rail Service Company’s staff.

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/nrcc/NRCOC.pdf
It is therefore permitted to start your journey in the west country in the afternoon, leave any station en route in the evening to stay in overnight accommodation because you cannot complete your journey that day, resume your journey the following morning and catch a lunchtime ferry from Holyhead. But finding someone with the experience and skill to issue all the reservations and travel ticket bearing the correct dates has sometimes been challenging.

Post #2 and post #5 seem to me to contradict each other.
the origonal poster stated

but going back via Birmingham, and breaking the journey back overnight in Bham. Is this valid?

Both are in fact correct.

NRCoC Condition 16(ii) sets out clearly the situation in which staying in overnight accommodation is not considered a break of journey.

Depending on the specific circumstances the OP finds himself in, both Post 2 and Post 5 could be correct. It does not matter however in this case as the OP is valid either way.

Edit: I didn't realise this was going to get quite this complex so I'll do a new thread. Thanks!
