Guidance for those asking for advice:

Please bear in mind the following, when asking for advice in this section:
  • We need to know all relevant facts in order to assist you, including, for example:
    • The stations* where you actually started & finished your journey
    • The stations* where you changed trains (if applicable);
    • If you presented a ticket(s), the information* stated under "Ticket type", "From", "To", "Route", and any other relevant details;
    • Details of any Railcard(s) held;
    • When and where ticket(s) were purchased, including whether this was prior to the journey commencing;
    • What happened in any encounter with railway staff;
    • Upload copies of any paperwork (with personal details redacted) with your post.
  • We need to know what outcome(s) you would consider satisfactory
  • We ask that you start your own thread as we have, in general, a one case per thread policy as we have found that every case is different even if they may appear similar at first glance.
* When referring to any stations, please write station names out in full the first time you refer to them; subsequently you may refer to correct station codes (as available here).

In order to help you, forum members may ask some probing questions, to establish exactly what happened. This will enable members to offer the best advice for your individual circumstances and ensure the train company has followed the correct procedure.

It is important that you are open and honest with us, otherwise the advice of our members may not be appropriate for your case.

The forum cannot be held responsible for any advice given by any forum member, and none of the advice given on this forum can be considered legal advice. If you are threatened with prosecution, you may wish to seek the advice of a solicitor.

Please note: by posting on the forum you are bound by our Forum Rules and privacy policy; in particular, please note you cannot delete your own posts (this includes editing your post, to remove content). We will only consider any deletion requests under exceptional circumstances; this is because threads in this section are a useful resource for those seeking advice.

Please do not 'tag' individual members, using their username; forum members will see posts you submit and will respond if they are willing and able to.

Fares Advisors

You will see that some members are identified as volunteer Fares Advisor so that you can identify people who are deemed knowledgeable and experienced in railway ticketing matters. Please note that the forum cannot be held responsible for any advice given by any member. Fares Advisors will try their best to give advice where they can, though may not be able to give the optimal advice in every situation.

Guidance for those responding to any thread in this section:

The purpose of the Disputes and Prosecutions forum is to provide advice for anyone who has encountered difficulties during or after their rail journey; any replies to any thread in this section should be constructive in nature.

Regardless of whether the person in question admits their guilt, or believes that they are completely innocent, everyone is entitled to seek advice and replies to the thread should be in line with the following principles (as appropriate):
  • Establish the facts of the case,
  • Check if the correct process was followed by the railway industry in dealing with the issue,
  • Ensure the Original Poster (OP) understands what has happened,
  • Explain what is likely to happen next and the options available to resolve the matter to the OP.
For the benefit of the OP we will not permit off topic discussion, any such posts are likely to be deleted. For instance a debate about whether current rail industry practice could be improved, or about the complex nature of the railway ticketing system or legal framework relating to railway ticketing matters is not helpful to the OP. Should you wish to discuss such practices or your ideas for changes to them, you must post this in a separate thread in the appropriate forum.

Therefore, posts in this section should be:
  • non-accusatory in nature
  • positive, constructive and genuine in nature
  • informative, factual, accurate and directly relevant
  • use trustworthy/accurate sources, where applicable
Furthermore, posts should avoid:
  • any allegations or suggestions of wrongdoing
  • negative or disparaging comments, or a negative tone
  • speculation, guesswork, hypothetical or false equivalence scenarios
  • referring to any sources which are not entirely trustworthy, accurate or appropriate.
  • causing confusion, such as introducing concepts that aren't relevant/applicable, without good reason.
If any member feels any post does not warrant a response in line with the above principles, we ask that no response is posted; if any post causes concern, we ask that it is not replied to and instead reported, by using the "Report" link underneath the relevant post (for multiple concerns within one thread, please simply report the first such post in the thread, and include all relevant details in that report). Due to the sheer number of posts on this forum, we are unable to review every single thread unless reported to us.
