I've had a good old chuckle at Australia's predicament! I bet they were chuffed to get 400...only for Shikar Dhawan to point out how far below par that score is!

It was good waking up at half 9, turning on Sky Sports and seeing the Aussies being spanked all over the park :D

I watched the last session of the day from Mohali, no matter what Clarke did the ball was flying to the boundary...just one of those days, but Australia really haven't got any decent spinners, only a few short months ago Panesar and Swann really did have India in a spin!
Yes, I must admit to having the odd chuckle myself!

A frustrating day so far, only one wicket to fall and no play since lunch. An early tea has been taken and umpires will check again at 1530 local time (0230 GMT) to see whether any more play will take place today. And with a very poor forecast for tomorrow the draw looks like the favourite

Close of play score...Day 4

New Zealand (2nd innings).....162-2

Williamson..55no
Taylor.......41no

Now we see why New Zealand is said to have a British climate, as rain curtailed the day's play to a total of only 35 overs being bowled. Now we see what it must have felt like in the old Test Match days in England when we hoped for rain to save us in matches against Australia.

The weather forecast for the fifth and final day.....Outbreaks of rain, heavy at times......<(

So heavy TMS has already gone off air and Sky are still showing Spanish football, and they think there is less than 10% chance of play, so its upto Auckland for a Thursday night (2130 GMT) start

Xavier Doherty, Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon are nowhere near the quality of Monty, Swann, or even James Tredwell for that matter. Please tell me two of the Ashes Tests are Cardiff and The Oval.........!

Please, either Durham or The Riverside ;) I know of literally no one other than the media and official Durham CCC messages that call it the Emirates Durham ICG. In other news I'm starting to get a little excited that my team's ground will be hosting an Ashes test :D

Personally, until Swanny had his injury worry recently, I was thinking that we should prepare all five wickets to be raging turners (or as close to as possible) just let Swann and Monty rip through them.

How about Chester-Le-Street, is that suitable ;)
I will always call it Durham as I regard The Riverside as the home of Middlesboro

Sure that's fine as well :)

Middlesbrough playing at their own Riverside might cause some confusion but trust me the way around isn't to starting calling it the 'ICG' ;)

I'm sure Swannsong will be fine for the Ashes. And I still fancy Finn, Anderson and Broadsword over Pattinson, Starc and Siddle. Especially against the Aussie top 6 with the exception of Michael Clarke.

Personally I agree with Botham who gave a combined nine - nil (one game washed out) prediction for the upcoming Ashes series.

I'd love it if that turned out to be true. I'll believe it when it happens!!!!

Now it's rain stopped play chaps, who do you reckon the best ever cricket captain has been, club or country, your opinions not on results data,

Mine goes to Stephen Fleming of New Zealand, reasoning being he was a intelligent cricketer had a good cricket brain but never had NZ squad to show his true abilities as a captain.

Came to Notts and guided them to the county championship and always spoke and presented himself well to media.

Cook is doing a good job at the mo, TEST of time!

Cheers

You are! You just know we'll be on the wrong end of a toss somewhere and Peter Siddle will run through the top order. I'd be happy with two 3-1 wins.

Now then, all of you, beware. Do not forget all the euphoria in another sport this last week which would have assumed that the English rugby union side would just view the match against Wales as one that they only had to turn up to win.....and how events proved them ever so wrong.

Let us reconsider the matter in the few days leading up to the First Test in that coming series, when matters may look slightly different.

I have the "cynical" part of my forum signature for a reason...<(

Day 5 of the second test between New Zealand and England was officially called off at 0100 GMT, meaning its winner takes all in Auckland. A frustrating day for all English cricket fans, but for the people of New Zealand the rain is very much welcome

It looks like the New Zealand team exhortations to Tawhiri, the Maori god of weather, have been answered by rain being sent over the last two days of this Test Match.

Still, Old Trafford is not the only ground where Test Matches are disrupted by rain (despite what some of the old cricket commentators would have you believe)....:D

I didn't think that England only had to turn up and win!

As for Cricket captains - I was impressed with Andrew Strauss, considering where England were when he took over I think he was excellent...Stephen Fleming was a good suggestion, anyone who can do well with limited resources has to be up there with the best.

I know, I know. Still, it's nice to be heading towards an Ashes series feeling confident, as opposed to how it was in the 90s!

heading towards an Ashes series
So with the above quote in mind, would it be worth letting Onions and Bairstow having a game, just to keep them match fit, even though there is a risk of losing the series one-nil ?

Australia have strength in depth in terms of their seam bowling and if one of Anderson / Finn / Broad get injured then it will leave a big dent .....

Remember that Anderson already has a sore heel !

p.s. whoever agreed the schedule of three back to back tests with no three or four day 1st class games in between should be sacked. I hope that this kind of schedule is not repeated on future tours.

No need for Bairstow to play, but there's merit in resting Anderson if his heel is in danger of being FUBAR'd.

PS, the reason for the stupid schedule is down to the letters 'I' 'P' and 'L'.....

Dead right - IPL always seems to be lurking in the background these days, as well as influencing the schedule of the tests. Probably very much a traditionalist myself as altho' I love cricket I really can't see the point of the IPL,but of course thousands, or is it millions, do!

I like the IPL, but I wish it didn't clash with England's Test matches. It would not be beyond the wit of the BCCI, ICC and ECB to sort that out...or at least it shouldn't be. Meanwhile, back in the real world.....
