Many of the Australians posting on Cricket forums are lamenting the dearth of Australian batsmen being able to play long innings and blaming it on poor organisation with CA and too much one day cricket and big bash etc....sounds very familiar to Eng fans who struggled through the years of Aus dominance in the 1990's. The Ashes is wonderful rivalry and if England can manage it why not grind Australia down and give them a taste...remember the Aus media suggesting 3 test series with Eng or indeed 4 day test matches, Steve Waugh and the like were merciless and were not prepared to give any quarter.

Yes, the shoe is firmly on the other foot now. I can't believe how poor their top 6 is, and aside from Peter Siddle and Ryan Harris, their bowling is poor. If the weather holds, this could be a whitewash...

Perhaps it may be time to recreate, in the Australian press, the 1882 edition of the the English news sheet, The Sporting Times, suitably amended in its wording to state....

Australian cricket has died and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken back home to Australia.....:D

The image in question. I believe in the current situation, the last words should be "will remain in England" :) :)

My Australian friends out here are remarkably quiet at the moment after the rugby and now the cricket.. *touches wood in case they mount a comeback

I see one of the top Aussie batsmen is having to leave the tour with stress fractures to his back. Who will take Pattinson's crucial No 10 spot now?

Snigger at the 'top batsman' line there! I'm quite sad he's off home really because he was bowling utter filth!

Unfortunately my posting that attempted humourous re-wording of the 1882 entry in The Sporting Life seems to have fallen upon stony ground upon this thread..

I got what you meant, but I'm not having any form of ashes going anywhere near Oz!<D

I found it amusing Paul and can't understand the response to it on here. We keep the originals and give them a totally new set was how I read your post... :)

Which is exactly what I intended that the "cognoscenti" on this thread would have taken to heart with great delight at the slough of despond that currently enmires the team spirit of the Australian team.

I think I knew what you meant Paul :D

I think that Australian cricket is a long way from what it was way back when and speaking to a couple of my Aussie friends today, one from Melbourne and one from Perth, they both seem to lament the retirement of a certain Mr. Hussey and the fact 'Cricket Australia' seem to be relying on the whole 'Big Bash' thing going on at the moment. Fewer younger cricketers seem to be interested in test cricket due to the big bucks available for T20. Huge shame really as test cricket is a sport beyond anything else and a joy to watch.

Let's see how they do against Sussex this weekend.

That'll be an interesting match.

I can't see Sussex putting out a second string squad, they will just want to pile on even more misery, ensuring the Aussies go home without a single win.

Perhaps the Australians will be praying for rain to prevent any further embarrassment...:D

Quite an exciting end to the Leicestershire v Lancashire Friends Life T20 match this evening at Grace Road, with the Lancashire number 11, Mitchell McClenaghan, hitting the final ball of the match for four, to secure a tied result. Both teams scored 139-9.

Lancashire sought to improve their T20 standing in the Roses match at Old Trafford by restricting Yorkshire to only 124-8 in their 20 overs, then proceeded to put the Tykes to the sword by posting the winning score of 127-2 in only 11 overs...with the first wicket pair scoring no less than 88 in the first 7 overs

Has David Warner blown his chances of playing again for Australia?

He seems to be another Andrew Symonds type of character.

Not bad, considering it was his first ball. But Lancs threw this one away.

A bit like Notts did the same evening against Derbyshire. :(

Luckily they returned to winning ways last night against Yorkshire. :) Just need to secure a win against Lancashire on Sunday to guarantee a home QF tie.

Hmmmm, Monty and Tremlett in the Test squad. A nod to days gone by when it was Monty and Harmison who took all the wickets on a bouncy Old Trafford track?

Monty is in the squad, but will the new Old Trafford wicket provide enough turn for two spinners?

I can understand why Finn isn't included, one word, consistency.

No news on Kevin Pietersen, but if not fit, then James Taylor plays.

How long till Kerrigan is knocking on the England door?

Watching "Cricket Writers on TV", they favour Panesar over Swann, what's your verdict?

The ability to be mentally strong and also to retain total self-belief in your ability to cause mayhem in the opposing batsmen is essential, whatever age you are.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The youngster Kerrigan seems to be doing ok on Old Trafford's wickets...

He is 24 years of age and is quite a useful slow left arm spin addition to the Lancashire bowling attack. In my rather more youthful days, I remember Roy Tattersall as being one of the slower bowlers in the Lancashire side who could exploit the old Trafford wicket, on which of course Jim Laker created Test Match bowling history against a certain other Test side, to whom I shall not add more grief here by naming..:D

I'm a fan of Monty but can't ever see England playing him over Swann, purely because of Swann's batting and fielding (and he's not a bad bowler, when fully fit!). I think Swann is essential in the slips, as England still haven't reached the standard achieved when Collingwood and Strauss were playing.

On slip fielding, Collingwood was a class act, now that area looks quite fragile.

England would be crazy to pick Panesar ahead of Swann, he should only be picked if we need two spinners, which I'm not convinced Old Trafford would turn enough.

Is it just me or are Australia not doing quite as well against Sussex as they should be? Aus 366/5d and Sussx 351/7, hardly the most convincing performance with the ball...

Well this is the points table for the 2012/13 Shield and from that it would be hard to say as everyone has won four games, everyone lost around four or five (apart from New South Wales and Tasmania) and there was only four points between top of the table and bottom!
