I'm trying to get a though ticket booked which is a London Terminals to Ryde Pier Head routed Any Permitted and is a Day Return, my question however reflects to the ferries...

Can I use this ticket as a return on the ferries between Portsmouth Harbour and Ryde Pier Head as there isn't any actual physical link between the two other then the ferries OR do I have to get a separate ticket for the ferry in both directions?

I am a TOCNE staff member so will be using my priv where possible.

Help will as always be very much appreciated :)

Through tickets are valid on Wightlink.

http://www.wightlink.co.uk/ferry-travel-info/coach-rail-through-travel

Several railway companies run direct trains to Portsmouth Harbour from destinations such as London Waterloo, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff and Southampton.

These services run directly to the Portsmouth Harbour Catamaran Terminal (Portsmouth Harbour Station and our Catamaran Terminal are within the same interchange) so getting across the the Isle of Wight is easy. You can get from London Waterloo to Ryde on the IOW in just over 2 hours.

On the Isle of Wight, Island Line services run directly to the Ryde Pier Head Catamaran Terminal (Ryde Pier Head Station is within the same interchange as our Catamaran Terminal) from Shanklin.

Just ask for a through ticket from your local station to any Island destination!

National Rail run trains to Lymington Pier and is located in close proximatey to the Lymington Car Ferry Terminal. Lymington Pier is well connected with a branch line connecting to the mainline London - Southampton - Bournemouth service at Brockenhurst.

Yes but I've been told I can't use my Priv discount on the tickets while using the ferries :|

Which is why I asked, I was just going to get a Day Return routed Any Permitted with PRV discount from London Terminals to Ryde Pier Head which is £13.10 but the PRV discount cannot be used on the ferries which makes a mockery of it being a though ticket.

Either I can get a though ticket with PRV applied or I can't.

It should be noted that only staff who entered service prior to 1st April 1985 are entitled to free/discounted travel (depending on the endorsement on their Staff Travel Card) on Wightlink.

All other staff only qualify for a discount as far as Portsmouth, and on Island Line itself, and have to pay normal rates for the crossing.

Details are on Page 18 of the "Where can I go?" document on the Rail Staff Travel microsite.

Would you expect in reality that this guy (with his London-Ryde ticket) would just be accepted on the ferry, as long as he didn't draw attention to the priv?

He would more than likely get away with it, unofficially.

It's £16.50 for a foot passenger day return from Portsmouth to Ryde on Wightlink. A SDR to Ryde is £52.40. So a PRIV + Wightlink foot return would still work out cheaper, although if you don't fancy taking the risk of acceptance on the ferry by using a SDR to Portsmouth Harbour.

But the other thing I don't understand is how it's cheaper to leave the island then it is to come in?

Is this their crafty way of keeping out undesirables ;)

It's to keep the residents sort of happy.

Because visitors are quite happy to pay a premium to go there.

Its only £17 for an "Island Express" ticket which Wightlink issue to cover "Combined day return catamaran and unlimited day rover travel on Island Line". 50p for the Island Line for the day is a bargain.

There is also a version including the Steam Railway as well
