VT passengers from Manchester to London advised to travel with FTPE to Leeds and then with East Coast to London, Passengers from London to Manchester advised to travel with VT to Liverpool and then Northern to Manchester.

At Stoke-on-Trent earlier they were advising passengers to take the East Midlands Trains to Derby and then onto St. Pancras if they wanted to go to London, not the most ideal solution to transfer the passengers waiting for an 11 coach Pendo onto a Class 153.

Travel Reports (Rail) on BBC today said (not in exact words but words to describe briefly):-
Virgin Trains cancelled between Preston and Glasgow/Edinburgh. Tickets accepted on TPE
TransPennineExpress cancelled between Preston and Glasgow/Edinburgh. Tickets accepted on VT.
Some rather useless advice.

North West Live Departures are still a complete mess this evening, travel must have been truly horrid where it was possible! the only diagrams looking anywhere near functioning around Lancaster were the Morecambe Branch shuttles & looks like TPE has got a 185 upto Oxenholme somehow to operate the last few Windermere's...

Went north on the 0700 Kings Cross to Darlington, about 2 hours late on arrival compared to normal TT (there was a revised TT but few people had seen it) with a range of delays.

Returning just turned up "on spec", a revised 1642 departure turned up about 20 minutes late but has then hammered at full speed southwards and is getting in to Kings Cross significantly early on its revised schedule; not a lot of early trains today.

From what I hear it's chaos at Cambridge right now.

It was busy outside Colchester station too, inevitably many people and few coaches. Credit therefore to NR for putting in single line working between Colchester and Manningtree as quick as possible. Passed two EMUs stranded on the down line which had been evacuated.

To say it's affected the entire country is overplaying it though, the west of England is pretty normal.

The only part of the country todays weather has not effected is South Wales and Far South West.

Even the southern counties had trouble with the extra leaves and rain making rail conditions horrendous.

Very true. My train from Shenfield (8 car 315) took ages to get up the hill to Ingrave summit, then ages to get down again as the driver was of course rightly cautious stopping at Brentwood.

The last three departures from Newark Northgate to Grimsby Town are cancelled. The NR website claims to list "Alternative trains" - there are indeed three services listed but there is a catch.
The 21:43 (now arriving 06:44) offers you a night on Scunthorpe Station
The 23:09 (now arriving 06:56) offers you a night on Lincoln Station
The 23:33 (now arriving 08:26) offers a rather long night on Doncaster Station

Wouldn't it be quicker to walk? (I once walked Louth-Grimsby with no ill effects)

ATW now saying that line between Chester and Rhyl will be closed until at least Saturday due to 'severe damage to the sea wall' - doesn't say where but possibly around Mostyn. An hourly train service will operate between Rhyl and Holyhead and a replacement bus between Chester and Rhyl.
Having been checking regularly this evening I must say that there has been much confusion and some conflicting advice!

There only actually seem to be a few trains running on time on the Southern network now. Adhesion problems seem to be reducing a little but have had major knock-on delays all evening so far.

It took the nearly four hours to evacuate 1Y20, I wouldn't say that was particularly creditable...

South West trains seems to be less affected by the weather during the day but in the morning and evening the weather was causing problems, in addition to a lineside fire this morning. Surprised they didn't cancel more station stops on he trains. One train I was in was running 30 mins late but still stopping at all it's usual stations.

Not an easy day for train companies. I hope everyone is as safe as they can be tonight.

I can assure you all 3 of this afternoon/evening's Newark Northgate to Grimsby Town services have ran, but the last 2 ran only as far as Barnetby. Nothing at all is currently running east of Barnetby due to flood risk with the East Coast tidal surge risk.

Easy to criticise from an armchair isn't it. I would refrain unless you know all the facts. At the first sign of bad weather many of us have the choice whether to travel or not. Those trying to keep the railway running don't have that option.

I agree!

This evening, Mrs W. returned from a Christmas shopping spree in Manchester, and I'd warned her that according to the ATW website, there was no service beyond Chester, and no rail-replacement coaches, and people were being advised not to travel. I was preparing myself to go and rescue her at Chester by car.

But her service from Manchester was advertised as through to Llandudno, as usual, with no over-riding comment from the guard, so she assumed the service had been restored. However, on arrival at Chester, she was told to alight, and await a replacement coach.

Which she did, and arrived home about an hour later than planned.

Very good in the circumstances, and well done to ATW for actually arranging replacement coaches. But while I appreciate the situation was changing by the minute, the conflicting advice did not really help.

Still, only a minor inconvenience compared with what passengers in other parts of the country have had to endure.

Rumours of a partial roof collapse on Doncaster Station, not seen any photos/proof yet but it wouldn't be the only roof to have gone there today!

That is good considering!
