Hi,

Probably a daft question...

I am looking to buy or rent a steam train to pull 2 carriages. Where do I start looking!

Not necessarily (though not providing enough information and not using a question mark could be seen as daft ;))

I think you might need to say where you want it to run first. Where are these 2 carriages? For what purpose? Have you tried contacting preserved railways near you?

1. Standard or other gauge?
2. Where do you want to run it, and for what purpose?
3. Compatability with coaches. Couplings, brakes, etc.
4. Who is going to crew it?
5. Do you have a safety case to operate it?
6. Security of premisis, access to necessary servicing facilities, etc.

I guess other cost factors would be considering motive power; 0-4-0 industrial saddle tank loco or 2-10-0 9F or 4-6-0 LMS Jubilee etc... How deep is your wallet?! You can book out a full train or carriage on the ELR and the SVR but I would imagine it's hideously expensive.

Most heritage lines will hire a train complete with crew and fuel etc, though remember that operation is virtually certain to be confined to the line in question.

If you want to run your own train on the main line/national network then this if effectively impossible for an individual, though it could presumably be arranged at very substantial cost by an established rail tour operator.

Buying your own train will be hugely expensive, even more so after remembering that you need somewhere to run.
An overhaul of a steam locomotive can easily cost a million pounds !

Don't Virgin trains do something like hire a train or coach? It was a while ago when I saw that though.

The Pretendolino is still available for hire, I dread to think how much it costs though! That said, I'm sure a poster on here rather recently has said the scheme is being closed.

I echo the above suggestions - pop into your local heritage railway (or give them a ring) and they'll be only too happy to help. Generally they'll be willing to arrange pretty much anything, given the right fee.

I chartered a diesel railcar for a party a few years back, and with a bit of negotiation got a fairly reasonable rate, including catering.

If you meant a little narrow gauge model thing, then I'm not too sure, I'm afraid.
