Thanks for the heads up.

Does anybody have any information on the Shrewsbury depot? Namely routes signed, 4 or 5 day week etc?

All correct, and they sign Bidston-wrexham now as well.

Earliest book on at Shrewsbury normally is around 0440, latest finish around 0115.

Do Shrewsbury also sign through to Man Picc via Stockport, or is this just Crewe? I thought Wrexham - Bidston was just signed by Chester, so I take it this is a recent addition.

I would be grateful if anybody could tell me whether ATW use SCAAT or GBT for conductor assessments and also if the two strike rule still applies.

Cheers.

Shrewsbury drivers sign through to Manchester but their guards only go as far as Crewe, Crewe-Manchester is exclusively Crewe work for guards.

Shrewsbury guards got a small amount of Bidston work last year but its still mostly chester guards and exclusively chester drivers.

Crewe guards sign:
Crewe to Manchester Piccadilly 4 ways (direct via Wilmslow & Stockport, via Styal, via Stoke-on-Trent and via Warrington BQ)
Crewe to Chester
Crewe to Shrewsbury
Chester to Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury to Birmingham International direct and via Bescot (both via Soho and Perry Barr)
Crewe to Wolverhampton via Stafford, plus the Oxley chord
Shrewsbury to Cardiff Central
Craven Arms to Llanwrtyd
Traction is 150,153,158 and 175.
Earliest book on is currently just after 3am, latest finish around 01:15.

Pwllheli sign:
Pwllheli-Machynlleth
Dovey Junction-Aberystwyth
Traction is 158 only.
Pwllheli only have 6 guards covering 2 booked jobs (1 early and 1 late) and 2 spare turns per day.

that's ok then, got me worried as my computer messed up and it said about additional questions but didn't load them so I refreshed and it said submitted, does anyone know what the telephone interviews like? and what tests are involved? I have previously passed the psychometric tests for a driver is it like that?
cheers

once you've submitted it u are basically stuck with what you have done.....unless you either call them and ask them to reset it which i am not sure they can do anymore......or you re apply with a different email addy....inform them if you do that though

I did the FGW Conductor assessment in July and was told that the two strike rule applied. FGW used SCAAT when I took it.

be careful! if that's what i think it is i tried that with a drivers application not so long back and once i did it wouldn't let me re apply! as you have effectively withdrawn the application.....then you'd definitely have to phone up to either reset or just use another email address....be very careful mate

I had the same email.

It does make you wonder what goes on at these recruitment offices, I mean I have a Phd, I am a manager in charge of lots of staff, I deal with hundreds of customers a day, I deal with payments, complaints, drunks, I am health and safety trained, fire regulations trained, first aid trained and give world class customer service to all my customers. What could they possibly find as a negative? It makes you feel useless, I'm not sure what more I can do or say in an application, I even said I would sign a 10 year no compete contract to prove I wouldn't leave for another company. I'm beginning to think they just have monkeys working in HR departments that randomly point to applications for a reward.

Don't get too downhearted. These HR "professionals" from Cardiff were the ones who were caught asking if candidates spoke Welsh... for a job in Chester.

I'd a good mind to get my bow and arrow to them and wait till sunset.

Haha I'm pretty sure that law is one of those myths, for my sake I hope it is as I'm often in Chester at midnight :D I will be sure not to buy you a quiver for christmas.

Could be location, over qualified, spelling error....may contact them all the same. I have 8 years train management experience dealing with incidents conflicts and managing staff. Irons in the fire elsewhere but no feedback is frustrating to say the least.

you can have all the qualifications under the sun but if your application hasn't got the right contents you won't get through!.....and even if it really did go on qualifications lets not forget there is always someone more qualified out there! when they recruited trainee drivers a couple of years back i heard they had pilots etc applying and not getting a position and look at the qualifications they have

yes it could be your location or anything! at the end of the day you have hundreds going for every job no one has a god given right to get through! I am no expert but from what i have heard making promises like that just reeks of desperation and unfortunately that doesn't always go down well!

RE 185.............are you aware the north wales coast which chester serves (especially beyond bangor) has a massive welsh speaking population?? and are you aware the welsh assembly government has a big say in what Arriva do? in terms of recruitment etc? so it's not really fair to say this is a HR thing!.....I'm sure a welsh speaking requirement comes from much higher than a HR department

Had a response to my feedback request which was just a stock copied and pasted set of possible reasons with nothing specific given.

yeah that's all it would be at an application stage mate......they wouldn't be able to trawl through every individual application form and give specific feedback as they would be there for weeks.

at an application stage it is generally the same things people fall short on anyway like location, grammar, missing buzz words/phrases, not having the right qualifications, not putting enough info in answers to the questions asked, missing questions altogether, age, not enough experience, convictions, multiple employment (moving from place to place every 2 mins) you know the usual stuff so that's why they would send you an email like that that's kind of vague, it's all done on point scoring and if it doesn't hit the right amount it is unfortunately rejected.

very disheartening but you are in the right place to find out how to get through it! loads of people on here that have been through it! I'm sure u will get there eventually mate! best of luck

HR don't do the shortlisting for ATW jobs, the managers do! Calling them monkeys is probably not the best way to start a prospective career...!

Jobs like these are fantastic opportunities....hundreds and possibly thousands of other people will have applied too....many with similar experience to you but who have sold themselves better in their applications....perseverance is key if you really want a career with a TOC, making excuses and calling line managers monkeys is perhaps not the best approach! For Conductor posts having a positive attitude at all times and not getting riled in very difficult situations is a key skill.....

A lot of a welsh patients and even some that speak Welsh are treated in hospitals on the border such as Countess of Chester, Gobown, Royal Shrewsbury but there's no requirement for NHS staff in a England to speak Welsh. The Relevant Welsh NHS Trust pays the English one and the Welsh NHS Trust gets its money from the a Welsh government who have a bigger £ say in Wales NHS than they do with ATW!

yes and that is down to what the NHS/welsh assembly have seen fit!......it's a completely different job in a completely different industry!.........it's not all down to the welsh government but they do have a big say and i know first hand that a lot of the welsh speakers along the north wales coast would prefer ATW had welsh speaking staff.....believe it or not quite a lot of people up there do class english as their 2nd language.

at the end of the day any employer has a right to set it's requirements in terms of qualifications/languages and they shouldn't be slated for doing so just because it rules certain candidates out!......that's properly scraping the barrel.....if cross country trains for example want members of their staff to speak chinese that's their choice!.........all i am saying is that there are bigger forces at work when it comes to recruitment!........Blaming HR in my opinion is A- short sighted and B- pretty stupid considering they have a big say in whether you get a job or not!

what happened to the days when candidates held their hands up and said fair enough i'll do better next time rather than blame others or come up with ridiculous conspiracy theories as to why they didn't get the job? like i said earlier these job's have hundreds applying for them at a time so no one has a god given right to be given one and no matter how fab people think their applications are there always better applications out there and people better suited for the job!

I know some of the people who've made it to final interview, and some of those who've been knocked back along the way, and the standard is ridiculously high; whoever gets the jobs will thoroughly deserve them.

As regards the Welsh language issue, all three English depots sign routes where Welsh speakers are likely to be found (North Wales for Chester, Cambrian for Shrewsbury and Heart of Wales for Shrewsbury and Crewe). That said, although the question is always asked on the application form, Welsh speakers are few and far between at those depots and it doesn't seem to be an issue.

Guards who sign the Heart of Wales line get a crib sheet with the station pronunciations when they learn the route :D

For Conductor posts having a positive attitude at all times and not getting riled in very difficult situations is a key skill.....

Once again Rail Forums needs a like button.....

VERY few and far between!.....they have every right to ask though eh!......North wales police for example have plenty of officers who don't speak a word of welsh but that ability or a willingness to learn is something they still ask for and that's their right :)
