Can't a Southern driver go and fetch them? There was one up there last weekend!

Incidentally if they came down the WCML there may be a Southern driver with route knowledge and Turbo qualifications to take over from Milton Keynes.

In theory they are a different class number so we don't sign them! I believe there are a few small in cab differences with this batch.

Any suggestions as to refurbishment and reforming of these units?

The five even numbered units (416/418/420/422/424) to give up their centre cars and become 171731-735 respectively, with the four odd numbered sets (417/419/421/423) to gain a centre car each and become 171807-810? Whichever way, there will be one centre car left over...

Only 4 units going to southern and being reformed for now. The rest being leased back to scotrail. There is some rewiring to be done to the units to make them the same as 171s, the couplers of course and I guess internally they will get southern seat covers.

Thanks for the info. Ive heard there are issues with finding crew
to bring them down here.

Surely a simple answer would be to hook them up to the back of the sleeper from Edinburgh and drop them off at Watford Junction ?!:lol:

We'll probably find them chucked on the back of low loaders and driven down the M1 causing monumental traffic jams over the Easter weekend. :D

The four units are currently parked in two sets of two in the sidings near Craigentinny Depot.

So one driver could bring down all 4 units (I believe 12-cars is the maximum for Sprinter/Turbostars without Pacers?)

Obviously would need two drivers since you would need one qualified on the 170s and one route qualified.

Loco hauled would make more sense presumably GBRf or similar to do the move rather than having to get a driver and route conductor.

I would imagine that they would be loco hauled to Wabtec at Doncaster or to Ashford Chart Leacon Works whoever is doing the refurbishment before going to Selhurst.

They would probably be refurbished by Wabtec at either Doncaster works or Brush Loughborough (or even Kilmarnock) as Bombardier closed Chart Leacon a few years ago now.

I doubt they will be loco hauled down though, more than likely GBRf or Colas will be brought in to drive them down south (or to the works) - I can't see why anyone would go to all the trouble and expense of finding barriers for a Turbostar when they've happily been driven from to and from Doncaster & Derby in the past to their respective TOCs. Maybe in 2 goes, quite possibly in 1.

If they go as a 12 car a suitably sized siding would be needed to stable them in along the way should they need looped or left somewhere overnight.

Its hardly an all day journey.
If the crew left after breakfast they would arrive at the yard in time for a late lunch.
They would be able to run at 100mph most of the way down.

A 12-car Turbostar is less than 300m long. Plenty of freights are longer than that, so there should be places it could be refuged.

Timed for 90mph? Class 158 Express Sprinter?

Well as always RTT timings don't mean that's what will end up running a service and also it seems quite common for Sprinters to be used when timing Turbostars.

I always thought that was so a 158 could appear instead / as well.

Well Greater Anglia services show as the same timing load as the one above. However they have no Class 158s. Its just a standard generic timing load for RTT I suggest.

The timings are based on a class and speed and of which any other class can maintain the timings. For example, if something which runs at 90mph is used, it means a 150 (75mph) would not be diagrammed to work it.
Once again, it is not what is diagrammed, so in this case a 170 could maintain the 158 timings.

Good question Peter. Nobody seems to know yet but it'd certainly make an interesting sight 4x turbostars heading down the ECML !
