158 at Bournemouth

As I was waiting for the 1950 Waterloo fast today, I was surprised to hear the points change for the rarely used bay platform, platform one. A minute later, a 158 pulled in and shut down.

This was 5B00 - (Link to Realtime Trains). It had come down from Salisbury T&RSMD and was showing "Corfe Castle" on both cabs.

Looking on RTT, I can't see any paths out of Platform 1 for the next two days, excepting 3S81 and 3S81 which are booked return paths for Eastleigh Arlington. There is this interesting path. It's marked as Freight, but it's the correct routing to get an OOS train from Wareham to Eastleigh yard. (Is East Yard the freight sidings on the London side of the station? If so then maybe not...) And given the connection to the Swanage railway is at Wareham...

Anyone know what it's there for and how long it's staying?

This might also be a nice use for the bay platform - Swanage line to Bournemouth shuttles, run by DMUs. Link Swanage directly to Poole and Bournemouth. (Borrow one of FGW's 150s to save a 158 being used - the 158 is more comfortable but it's a bit of a waste to keep one on shuttle duties all day when it could be used elsewhere. And no jokes about loco hauled 442s, they wouldn't fit in the bay platform! :) Could also be a use for a dual powered metro version of the IEP - two carriages, third rail from Wareham and battery on the Swanage... Ok, I'll get my coat. :D )

As it has come down from Salisbury, it is safe to presume that it's the Lymington Branch unit stabling for the night, before heading off to Brockenhurst in the morning for a week on the Branch?

There was a power supply problem at Weymouth on Friday, with electric trains running only as far as Dorchester South, with a diesel shuttle between Dorchester and Weymouth. Is this perhaps connected to that in some way?

Isn't that on the wrong side of the station for Swanage? Or is this another bay I've forgotten about?

I've been to the bay platform, which they occasionally use during engineering works that restrict platform capacity at Southampton — they extend their Portsmouth to Southampton locals to Bournemouth, picking up the Poole Stopper calling pattern west of Southampton (correct me if I'm wrong with this). So this means the bay platform is on the up side.

And Eastleigh East Yard is indeed the yard on the up side of the station primarily used for freight. There's also Eastleigh Works and Eastleigh T&R.S.M.D., which have varied uses; as a depot for CrossCountry trains and for storing or working on stock both heritage and modern. I don't believe South West Trains use any of these. Finally there's Eastleigh Down Carriage Sidings, I've forgotten what uses them, but I THINK this might be the one used by SWT to stable one or two trains.

Could SWTs be using it for clearances checking on the Swanage Railway? When a class of train has been check for clearances on a given route and then doesn't run on that route for a while, how long is it before the clearance checking "expires"?

I suspect the Corfe Castle destination was just someone having a bit of fun. Those destination screens are interesting, I've seen "Seaside Special" more than once, and only one of those times was it semi-justified ;) (It was a Lymington shuttle, which while technically by the sea doesn't have any beaches which is probably what people expect when they hear the word "seaside"... I seem to recall the other was the FGW loan unit!)

Going off topic, but my favourite is "Mystery Excursion" (on a South wales-portsmouth FGW service...)

Muzer - Yes, the bay is on the up side of the station. Thanks for the info on Eastleigh; I think you are correct on SWT stabling trains in the sidings - if they are the ones I'm thinking of, there's usually a 158 or 159 or a 450 sitting in them on Friday evening. I think you're right about the screens.

I remember the days back in the 1990's that trains would start from that bay platform that would take you along the coast to Worthing, then connect with a train that had come from Littlehampton, to then go on via Hove to Haywards Heath to connect with a train that had come from Eastbourne to form a 12 coach train to London Victoria.

I must admit it would be nice to have direct London Victoria trains from Bournemouth. I seem to recall that the train you're talking about, Robbies, when under Connex's management was frequently extremely late. So if it, or something similar was reinstated, timing would have to be looked at. Also choice of stock would be interesting.

I was going to suggest 5x442 (or 444 or 377) from BMH joining up to another 5x from Brighton at Three Bridges then up to Victoria via Gatwick Airport and maybe Clapham Junction on the weekends. Then I realized a 5x anything wouldn't fit in the bay platform.

What does fit in that platform anyway? A 450 won't fit, neither will a 444 or 442. How about a 377/3? A 456 should? Diesel would be pointless as the entire route is covered by 3rd rail.

We had a similar thread to this about possible use of the bay platform last June, and we proved that 450s did fit, and had done diagrammed rusty rail moves in past timetable periods. You were a participant but must have forgotten...

I was on the train in the picture I posted above, so not just rusty rail! That was the aforementioned Portsmouth to Bournemouth service during engineering works.

If it was being stabled overnight, how come it wasn't stabled in Bournemouth depot which is probably less then a couple of miles away?

Aye, all discussed in the prior thread June 14. All we really need to know this time is what this particular 158 was actually there for!

As usual we've digressed into historic routes that were cut back to Southampton for perfectly valid reasons at the time. Of course the recent Wessex route study now proposes introducing Brighton to Bournemouth through services that may well use the bay again, but that doesn't help the lonely 158...

The 158 in the bay was nothing to do with lymington. It was brought down from salisbury to be on standby in case they wanted to implement a Dorchester south to Weymouth shuttle, but don't think it was used this time. A diesel unit was used to provide a shuttle on that route last week briefly ( think Friday).

@swt_passenger Evidently, I've forgotten. I remember a previous thread about the bay platform which I think I started but that was a long while ago and I don't remember how the conversation unfolded.

Re. Brighton to Bournemouth, this would be a very good thing. In the long term, I'd quite like to see a coast route running the length of the coast - Penzance to Dover or something like that. Currently entirely impractical and a lack of a link between Weymouth and Exeter just kills the idea off. (Ok, you could go Southampton - Salisbury - Yeovil - Exeter, but it's hardly a coast route...)

This worked 2G89 1814 Swindon - Cheltenham Spa and then 2M24 2001 Cheltenham - Westbury the previous night, before being stabled at Westbury. Might give a clue?
