Hi

I've often used the flight tracker and ship tracker apps on my Ipad which show the actual location of planes and ships on route to their destination.

Is there a similar 'train tracker' which can show the locations of trains both passenger and freight on the British rail network map in real time?

If not it would be a great app to have so people can follow a train service on its entire journey like they can with planes and ships :)

Anyone with [possibly nefarious] access to Genius can also access Tornado Mobile, which is a lite version of P2.

Of course this is for staff use only, and although there is open data available, only OpenTrainTimes has started to allow public access in a, currently, limited number of areas in a P2 format.

Not the UK, but this is one I found for ČD in the Czech Republic (only in Czech I think). http://www.cd.cz/mapa/?vrstvy=VP
The map is zoomable. Trains are colour coded (eg green=on time, red=30 min late), and you can click on the train icons for more info.
Only passenger trains are shown (icons sized for different types of train).
You can select which types of train are displayed (tick box top right).
On their Pendolino trains you can follow your train's progress with the on-board wifi.
But then I think you can do that on VTEC trains with an on-board app.
Now we just want one like this from NRE. ;)

That's not true - there are at least half a dozen websites with 'live' train tracking
maps these days, including my own!! ;)

But the most extensive coverage by far is on the Railcam site which
covers far flung areas such as Fife, Cornwall, Welsh Valleys and the
Cambrian lines as well as the more obvious main trunk routes.

Yes, but I was talking about in a format that resembles a track diagram/signal box diagram, though I see that RailCam do it this way too.
Don't know if you do it that way too.

Not sure how that site is supposed to work but have just seen a London-Norwich train overtake a London-Witham train approaching Hatfield Peveral.

Not for use in the UK, but for public transportation in the Netherlands:
One can follow most of the trains, busses and other kinds of PT at
http://ovzoeker.nl/
This site uses real-time GPS data. The official Dutch Railways (NS) app "NS Reisplanner Xtra" contains a feature called Train Tracker, which shows the same thing for trains from the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Railways) only (same data feed as above mentioned website).

Since it's not been linked yet - http://www.railcam.uk/site/supporters/xoops_diagraminfo.php
Currently available for supporters with a £10/year donation - in my opinion better quality and coverage than other websites, and includes a number of other exclusive supporter-only railcams.

What is CCF?

'Control Centre of the Future' which is a grand name for what are really moving maps, it is also what a lot of the public 'moving maps' are derived from, shows where each train is, (well last signal berth) and by colours how late ot early it is, click on the headcode and brings up schedule details, also does some other stuff too :) When the headcodes are megenta, we know we are in for a rough time !

Erm, maybe not. It shows London to Manchester trains going up the MML and along the freight only Coalville line!
And all Edinburgh to Tweedbank services going round the Edinburgh South Suburban and reversing at Brunstane... No such thing happening according to any other source - which was a slight disappointment!

Opentraintimes seems good, but it's not bug-free as I have just watched a 158 passing my house in Cambridgeshire en route from Edinburgh to Aberdeen.

This is usually because there are two trains in the system with the same headcode.

I guess you clicked on 1L24 0628 Swansea - Paddington and the system gave you 1L24 0722 Yeovil Junction - London Waterloo instead.

It seems quite inaccurate around Reading. Clicking on a couple of trains showed one service from Hayes to Cannon Street, and another one from Yeovil to Waterloo...

I often use the OTT maps in conjunction with the search option on RTT. If the RTT result gives multiple trains it won't be too difficult to work out the appropriate one.
