So last night 221128 whisked me away on the 1902 Stafford to Plymouth (1V67 1805 ex-Manchester) and luckily my seat was a forward facing seat. However I realised that usually the train reverses at Birmingham.

I looked on Real Time Trains and noticed that we were booked to go via Bordesley Junction and not via Five Ways which meant luckily that we didn't go backwards. I always thought all services go via Five Ways?

I know on the way up my train went through Five Ways. Are they just allocated at random or are they booked certain routes?

They are going that route all day. Trains from the Wolverhampton/Manchester Direction. Have a look at Lifford East Jn on RTT for a list.

Some of the mornings ones aren't. The 1007 Paignton to Manchester isn't.

The point not yet made is that the northbound and southbound routes for the Manchester/SW Service are intentionally not booked the same way. Because the railway runs on the left of a twin track pair (obvious I know) reversals at a west facing junction cause significantly more pathing difficulties in the south bound direction.

So if you list the whole service over the day the ratio of through trains to reversers is different by direction.

When the trains were loco-hauled and all needed loco changes anyway, they all used to reverse and one route was designated freight only.

Nowadays they run diesel powered under the wires.:(

The Camp Hill route has never been designated freight only, but its use by passenger services has varied over the years.

Arguably there are more passenger services over it now than at any time in its history.

It has also been used as a diversionary route into BHM via the Lifford Curve over the years for XC services originating from Leicester/East Anglia and from Derby. Plans do surface from time to time to reinstate passenger services on the Camp Hill line too.
