A farmer is going to Market. He has one Chicken, one Fox, and one Bag of Seeds. He has to cross a river on his journey to the market. His boat can only carry one item at a time. He can leave items on each side of the river. He can make as many journeys as he wants. He must have all of his stock to sell. How does he get everything across?

I know this one!!!

Take Chicken First.
Go back.
Take Seeds.
Go back with Chicken.
Take Fox.
Go Back.
Take Chicken Back... again.

Reason being; Fox eats chicken. Chicken eats seeds. IIRC, they won't touch the food if the farmer's there. So the only two items he can leave together is fox and seed. Hence the reason that the chicken needs to do 3 trips.

You can do the fox and seeds in any order as well.

Bit of a brainteaser here I hope...

What can go round round the world, but always stays in the corner?

An object in the corner of a box on a round the world plane/boat.

Easy one:

There's a hole in the ground. It's 6 foot deep and 3 foot wide.
How much dirt is there in the hole?

A similar one; It takes one man 3 hours to dig a hole. How much time does it take two men to dig half a hole?

Mary has 3 children. One is called John. The youngest is called April. The second is called May, so what's the eldest called?

the mother?

loads of people always say June

I am thinking of a number. It is even, and it's a prime number.

(those who are good at maths should just know that straightaway )

Correct. quite a few people think of surgeons as men so forget the mother

I concur with Mr. Minton's answer of "Two".

Here's one for you: which element is the most abundant in normal air?

Oxygen ~21% IIRC. Amazing how many people say Oxygen. Their second guess is usually Carbon Dioxide!

Nitrogen's actually about 78%, Oxygen 21%, Argon and Carbon Dioxide together make about 1%, with some other trace gases.

I thought it was N2 72% and O2 26%? Must check up on that!

Carbon dioxide is a gas and a compound, but not an element. I can see wires being crossed if you become complacent with your wording.:)

Yes you were right:oops: It's been a while.

I changed my question in my own head

Lime: CaO

1 mole=56.08g

1:1 ratio; 50% Calcium Ions, 50% Oxide Ions

By mass: 71.47% Calcium, 28.53% Oxygen.

It's been a while since I did chemical calculations! Although that's a geeky chemistry question and not a trick question ;)

Answer: Two
I've never come across this trick question before and I'm certainly not going to argue an answer...But can I just ask what reasoning is used to obtain the answer Two there?

My initial thought was that the answer should be "John" (As April is the youngest, June is the 2nd youngest, thus John must be the oldest of those three) but I'm guessing that some form of mathematics or algebra is involved here. 8)

Unless of course ye are in my immediate vicinity shortly after I've had a curry, in which case the local composition changes slightly:
  • Nitrogen: 46%,
  • Oxygen: 15%,
  • Argon/CO² and other minor gases: 2%
  • Methane: A whopping 37%... :!::shock::|*
(* - Of course, I'm assuming that Methane is an elemental gas here. I just stole a quick look at the Periodic Table and couldn't immediateley see an obvious entry for it, but the same table represents Potassium with the letter K, so there!:razz:<D)
------------------------------------------------------
Anyhow:
An open-minded Nazi, an honest Lawyer, The Virgin Mary, and a male secretary are all travelling in a car when it runs off the road and crashes. Who was driving the car when it crashed?:D;)

It was something I was working on at the time. You never know, someone could've said citric acid;)

Methane; not an elemental gas, CH4, produced during the breakdown of organic matter under anaerobic conditions.

Depending on your own personal opinion, either the male secretary or the honest lawyer, as (arguably) none of the others exist!
