Well the day has finally arrived, after a month without going out on a mega trip and withdrawn symptoms definitely kicking in I am up before the alarm and preparing for the final part of my 3 Capitals tour and my Scottish adventure. I do the three S’s (Shower, shave and.......sneeze) and ensure I have everything in my bag that I will need for the two days (undoubtedly I will realise I have forgotten something just as I approach Edinburgh – Ed), put the cats food down for the two days and then head off for the 20 minute walk to the tram stop on a gloriously sunny morning as I arrive at Brooklands I just miss a tram but I think having yet to buy my ticket and only 6 minutes to wait for the net tram I am not fussed. I board dud 3013 for the trip to Deangate-Castlefield and it is surprisingly quieter than I had expected. During the journey I realise I am feeling hungry so first thing on the agenda when I arrive at Manchester Piccadilly is to get some breakfast.

On arriving at Deangate-Castlefield I have a couple of minutes to wait for my tram forward to Piccadilly and notice that since the Astley time I was here the stop has got a lot greener withe the plating of trees, anyhow a pair of dud trams arrive in the form of 3071 and 3067, I board the former for my trip to Piccadilly.

Breakfast time! So at Piccadilly I nip into Sainsbury’s to get a bit of fruit and then head to Costa for a coffee, however after seeing the news reports this last week about the paper cups scandal and about how much is not recycled I want to buy a travel mug but I could not see any available so in the interest of doing my bit or the environment I sacrificed my Costa for a Starbucks and purchased a mug and coffee from there before heading to Greggs for a porridge. My good deeds done for the day (protecting the environment and healthy breakfast) I he’d to the station for my train and notice that there is a service to York in 6 minutes (0811) from platform 13, just enough time to head over there. A large section of the glass partition between the platforms and concourse has now been moved in preparation for fitting ticket barriers. One platform 13 the train arrives and is formed of dud units 185136 and 185133, I climb aboard the rear unit for my trip to York where I finally have my breakfast, as I am sat here a nice feeling comes over me in the thought that in a couple of years I could be doing this run on LHCS behind a class 68.

At York I have 12 minutes to wait for my onward journey. I can’t remember the last time I went to Edinburgh on the East Coast as I usually get the direct services from Manchester but I am glad I did as required 91102 rolled in on the 0953 to Edinburgh, first score of the trip.

After a nice relaxing trip up the East Coast with a coffee and a bag of hand cooked crisps – I know I was trying to eat healthier but long as I keep within my calorie allowance I should be fine(and miss seeing Lord Spoon at Newcastle who apparently was waving wildly as my train passed by – sorry about that -Ed) I arrive at Edinburgh on time and in the sunshine. After taking a picture of my steed that had brought me here I peruse the units present and I seem to need them all.

First things first. Something healthy to accompany my Tuna Pasta so a visit to M&S and I depart with a fruit and carrot pack and head to the train. The first to leave is the 1230 to Inverurie formed of required 170430 so I board the train knowing that I need Leuchars for a shack, however it is only then I realise that it is a 55 minute journey so I bail at Haymarket and only have to wait a few minutes for required 158734 to arrive so I board for a shorter trip to Kirkcaldy.

Arriving at Kirkcaldy I thought I had already been here but I have no records of it, unless it was before I started shack bashing, so now it’s in the book and scratched off. Here I have a 16 minute wait for my next train to take me to Glenrothes with Thornton. Required unit 158730 arrives to take me on to my next shack.

At Glenrothes with Thornton I am confused for a few minutes as there are 2 platforms and I want to head back where I came from but RTT says it is the same platform!? I spent a few minutes pondering over this until I noticed the departure board and it said the same. It was a 11 minute ester so my confusion ate up 5 of those minutes and it wasn’t long for required 158702 to arrive to take me on to Kinghorn, that’s another shack that bite the dust.

With the stations on the Fife Circular going down nicely I continue on this vain and cross the platforms for the next available train, which after 15 minutes is required 170458 operating a service to Glenrothes. I remain on the train once it reaches its destination as it’s next job is down the other side of the Fife Circular so I remain on it as far Rosyth.

On leaving the train at Rosyth (another new shack) I only have a 5 minute wait for a train back in the direction I had just come, unfortunately when it arrived it was a dud 158730 which I had earlier in the day. I board the train and at least I know that at the end of the journey I would have another new shack to put in my book.

On arriving at Cardenden (shack 5 for the day – Ed) I leave the dud and cross to the opposite platform when only after a few minutes normal service was resumed when required 158724 arrived to take me a couple of stops down the line to Cowdenbeath, only 5 stops now left on the Fife Circular.

At Cowdenbeath I have 28 minute wait for my train so there is just enough time to nip into Morrison’s to get something for tea before heading back to the station, where only a few minutes later required 158726 arrives to take me forward. Now the plan had been to change at a required shack on the way to Edinburgh Waverley but I would have been really tight for me to be back at Edinburgh to get one of the two trains that was at the heart of my trip up here. So I remain on board the train back to Edinburgh.

Arriving at Edinburgh 1 minute ahead of schedule I have 12 minutes until my train is due so I don’t have to rush to get to platform 2 and was able to watch required 68006 snake into the station with its carriages behind it. I climbed on board in the coach behind the locomotive and at 1720 it started it’s journey to Cardenden although I only remained on the train as far as Inverkeithing where I left the train and bumped into 2 fellow enthusiasts who when I got nattering to them were doing the exact same thing as myself and who turned out to be two fellow work colleagues who were based in the Midlands. We carried on nattering away about loco hauled trains, SVR Diesel Gala and anything else railway related and before we knew it dud 158731 was arriving to take the three of us to our next Connection.

At Burntisland we leave the train and I score another new shack and we cross over to the opposite platform waiting for the 1834 to Edinburgh to arrive and not long after required 68007 arrives and we take up the obligatory seats in the front coach right behind the locomotive for the thrash back to Edinburgh. But at Haymarket I bid them farewell and safe journey home as I left the train to go and check in to my B&B for the night.

A short 20 minutes later (yes I was that close to the station, about 5 minutes walk each way – Ed) I walk back at Haymarket and had decided on knock off a few more stations on the Fife Circular before the night was out. So required 170395 arrived and I boarded the train for a journey that would take me to new shack of Dunfermline Town.

At Dunfermline Town I only have a 9 minute wait for required 158723 to take me back, now let me say something about this unit. It appears to have had a bit of a spruce up inside and everything seemed refreshed and it was the only 158 I have been on today that was fitted with USB charge points, no plugs, at every seat. On the return trip I notice a military C-130 parked nose on at the remote stand at Edinburgh airport, unfortunately I was not able to identify it and it wasn’t there on my trip up. Also it was the first time I had noticed they were building a train station for the airport, how I missed it is have no idea as it is well progressed so when that is opened I will need another visit to bag it.

At South Gyle I leave the train and score yet another shack and with having only 2 stations left had originally planned to go out to Lochgelly and leave Delgety Bay until tomorrow morning but checking the times of the trains if I did Lochgelly tonight I wouldn’t get back to Haymarket until just before 2300, however with an extra 10 minute wait at South Gyle I can do a return trip to Delgety Bay and be back at Haymarket before the return journey from Lochgelly departs! No contest I wait the extra 10 minutes at South Gyle and dud 158870 arrives to take me to Delgety Bay, where after a 10 minute fester required 170473 arrives to take me back to Haymarket and the end of a successful day, however on the trip back I realised that I had 13 red pens today and was considering to head into Edinburgh Waverley and pick up another red pen so that it wasn’t stuck on the unlucky number.....nah!! At Haymarket I left the train and headed to my digs for the night.

Wednesday 25th May 2016
Woke after a cracking nights sleep when my alarm went off at 0730, showered and left before breakfast as I am trying to watch what I eat again and I know or a fact if I had had breakfast it would have been the full monty and would have not been good. So coffee, banana and porridge bought it was off to the station.

At Haymarket I notice I have a +20 minute wait for my train to Lochgelly, so I decide to have a run into Edinburgh Waverley and pick up the train from there and boarded required 334021 for the short hop.
On arriving at Haymarket Edinburgh I notice I have about 10 minutes until my train, sufficient time to nip to the voting office to pick up a timetable for the borders line so that I can plan my trips for the day. On returning to the station I see that the train station is dud 170395 and considered waiting for the net one but once I realised it was another hour I do on changed my mind and climbed aboard the dud unit for the trip to my last stop on the Fife Circular.

At Lochgelly I leave the train and with only a 10 minute wait I make my way round to the opposite platform (Tech – thanks for the tip in regarding the station, it is a bit of a trek from one platform to the other) and it is not long before required 170455 arrives to take me back to Edinburgh. On the trip back I update this report (after somehow losing half of it last night! Don’t know how – Ed) and plan my trips along the Borders line, I never realised I could get every station along the line visited in such a short time. As we crossed the Forth Railway bridge I got a good shot of the tanker ship British Cygnet moored up either loading or unloading I have no idea.

Back at Edinburgh Waverley I have just under 20 minutes before I start my trek on the Borders Line so just time to source some lunch before heading to platform 7 for my train which was required 158706 for a ride out to the first required shack (actually I need them all along the Borders Line so I am not going to comment about needing them along this line – Ed)

At Newcraighall I leave the train and wait for required 158702 to take me to Braunstone, where after leaving the train and a 16 minute fester required 158717 (sorry Tech – Ed) arrives to take me further down the Borders Line, as we passed through Shawfair I note that this is one of the few double platforms and there is what seems a long footbridge to get from one to the other and here is the snag – I only have a few minutes 2 minute connection time here later! I make note of the optimal place on the train to be to fly over the footbridge to pick up the next train, I continue on the 158717 as far as Gorebridge where I only have a 5 minute wait for required 158741 to take me to Shawfair.

Now if you remember a few lines ago I mentioned about the situation at Shawfair? Well I need of not worried because although 158741 departed Gorebridge on time by the time we got to Shawfair we were 3 minutes late and only a minute ago the train I should of been on passed us going in the other direction. I can categorically confirm Shawfair is not a place to be stranded. All there is a little housing estate and that’s all. No shops, no pubs, nothing. Come back in ten years and it might be different because there seems to be a lot of brown field sites surrounding the station ripe for the building of houses. After waiting 27 minutes dud 158724 arrives to take me towards Tweedbank and I have to say all this clamour about the Borders Line being a “Scenic Line” I could not see it until you leave Gorebridge and head further away from the built up areas and then it opens up into some beautiful landscapes.

I leave the train at Galashiels and am surprised at the size of the town and the new bus station compared to the old one, the only comparison I can come up with is by moving someone out of a mud Hut into a detached three bedroom house, if that makes any sense. So a little stroll in the town before I return to the station for the next train due to a 22 minute fester and dud 158724 has returned from Tweedbank to take me to Stow with a 29 minute fester here I walk as slow as possible to get to the opposite platform to try and cut as much time as possible for me to stand around. When dud and required 158706 arrives to take me to the end of the line at Tweedbank.

Having a quick look around I do have to question why they ended the line here? There is a housing estate but that is it, yet looking at the maps not to far down the line is Melrose which seems to have a few touristy bit there. They could have still had a station at Tweedbank and just extended the line. After a 37 minute fester dud and 158717 (sorry again Tech – Ed) arrived and I boarded for a trip to Eskbank with a 9 minute wait for yet another dud unit in the form of 158741 again to take me to Newtongrange.

At Newtongrange I leave the train and would have a 16 minute wait for a train to Edinburgh but I am now in a desperate need for a PNB and getting very grumpy because of that so having spotted a pub on Google Maps I go on a hunting trip and realise I am not going to get back in time and will have to get the next one. So I finally find The Dean Tavern and after using the facilities I thought it would be rude not to have a pint while I am here so I purchase a pint of Guinness Golden Ale and sit down to celebrate visiting all the stations on the Borders Line, I also learn that this pub is the only Gothenburg pub in Scotland meaning that all profits made are ploughed into local community projects, which makes my pint more rewarding. I finish the pint and return to the station for the 1630 to Edinburgh and surely after 4hrs 30mins with no new units surely my luck will change....well no, as super dud 158724 (3rd trip on this unit today and even the 1st trip was a dud) arrives to take me to Edinburgh.

Seeing it has not gone well today and I have been delayed and lack of required units I decide to modify my plans as I had originally planned to get the 1816 to Manchester but I have now opted for the 2018 to give me a few extra hours.

So at Edinburgh I decide to do a few short hops between Edinburgh and Haymarket to rack up a few scores so I board required 158704 to take me just down the road and then quickly return with required 158867 so then it was straight onto 170412 forming the 1730 Edinburgh-Croy, by this time I’m getting warm and I’m sure the train heating is on so I take off my jacket to remove my sweater and then put my jacket back on.

I leave the train at Haymarket and make my way up onto the bridge and although I am not going through the barriers as I am just changing platforms I check for my railway pass.....err, where is it!? I empty every pocket in my jacket – no not there, I hen empty my bag as much as possible because I don’t think the other passengers would want to see my used underwear strewn across the footbridge and not there . Then there was the was the lightening strike, the sudden shock of realisation of what has happened. I’ve lost my travel passes, but where. Within an instant I realise what has happened. My pass had fallen out of my pocket on 170412 when I was taking my sweater off. Went straight to a member of staff who pointed me in the direction of the station supervisor who took down the details and contacted Falkirk High which was the trains next stop to see if they can find it. All I can do is wait and if they can’t be found I’ll have to pay to get home, after an anxious 20 minute wait the call comes through to say they have found my passes and would be on the next train back so with just over an hours wait the pass was back in my hands and I was back on the tracks, never a dull moment when I’m out and about! I was wondering could I book Falkirk High for a new shack? Although I haven’t been there my passes have.

My next train was required 170461 back to Edinburgh were the only train I needed wasn’t for another 25 minutes so I hang on for that and board 158701 forming the train 1910 to Kirkcaldy and leave the train at Haymarket and stay on the same platform because I noted another train I needed while leaving Edinburgh so a few minutes later required 158721 arrives to take me to South Gyle where there was a 10 minute fester until the train back which turned up to be a pair of required 158’s so I boarded 158735 from South Gyle to Haymarket and then transferred to 158732 to Edinburgh.

With time getting on I purchase some tea and have time for one last cop which turns out to be 334022 to Haymarket were I leave the train and wait for my train home which I know will be dud and was 350403.

It was quiet a quick trip to get to the West Coast Main line from Edinburgh, it’s a journey I always think will take ages but it doesn’t. We pass Kingsmoor just as the light is fading into dark and I can only make out a few locomotives and I do think 68025 is stalking me as it was at the SVR diesel gala last week and there it was tonight with 37607 on a nuclear flask train. It looks like there is some major roof work coming up at Carlisle as scaffolding is being erected on the platforms.

Although it’s been quite an eventful (and stressful at times) it has been an enjoyable two days.

Two fantastic reads there good sir, helped destroy the boring work-bound commute! I lost my original reply, but it was mostly of a competitive nature so perhaps no big loss! I see you got 3 of my last 11 Scottish 158s, and that you note 158702 being required in both day 1 and day 2.

I sure want to go back to Scotland now, although I'll be focusing on my SPT area needs this time I suspect.

A mighty fine read there Andy, thoroughly enjoyed it. 158723 has indeed been spruced up. There are 6 of them floating around at the moment (all Inverness based), and eventually they'll all look like that. You can't have too many Scottish 158s left to find now after such a clearout?

It must have been awful to find that you didn't have your tickets! Glad you managed to find them again though! Sounds like an excellent time other than that though!

Two cracking reads there Andy, yes I was waving like loon:oops: but about a minute after Low Fell junction not Newcastle. Reminded me of when I was a nipper sitting on the wall by the ole signal box with my dad or grandmother, near Monkwearmouth waving at the drivers, driving the 101s, some used to acknowledge me with a wave or a toot on the horn, some just went by.

Sounds like you had a cracking time, glad you were reunited with your passes. Had my last 350/4 I need to clear them for haulage too. #swine.

When the alarm went off at 05.30 this morning i was full off the joys of spring, well at least that was what I was dreaming. In reality i was like a bear with a sore head. Somehow i clambered out of bed and fed the cat and showered before heading out to drive into Manchester. I was driving for a couple of reasons instead of using the tram, firstly I had a late return tonight not getting back before 2300 and secondly the trams aren’t running through Manchester until August.
So at Manchester Piccadilly I purchase my usually breakfast, a bacon roll with a coffee from Gregg’s. I’m such a creature of habit and I then board my train the 0700 to London Euston and settle down with my breakfast on dud 390152. The run to London Euston was uneventful, so much so I nodded off and missed Willesden (grr – Ed).
On arriving at London Euston I leave the station and head to Euston Square for a Metropolitan line train, let’s just take a moment to explain a bit about today. I produced 3 bingo cards, each with 25 stations on them within the Zones 1-6. My aim is to get a line on each or a full house. So at Euston Square my train arrives and is formed of dud section 21352 but the other sections is required 21351, my first need of the day which I remain on as far as Barbican to claim my first station of the day, here I only have a few minutes to wait for a train to arrive and another cop for the day as 21104 arrived to take me to London Liverpool Street as this train was only going as far as Aldgate, again only a couple of minutes to wait until the arrival of a Hammersmith & City train to take me to dud station of Bow Road in the form of required 21480.
At Bow Road I had a few minutes walk to get to my next new shack and the start of my DLR runs and head to the platform at Bow Church for a run towards Canary Wharf and this is where it all went crazy in more ways than one. Firstly there was major disruption due to a passenger incident at Crossharbour and secondly, it’s me! So I will just list my moves.

78 Bow Church to Langdon Park
146 Langdon Park to All Saints
134 All Saints to Canary Wharf
61 Canary Wharf to Crossharbour
(Everything has started to return to normal now)
12 Crossharbour to Mudchute
133 Mudchute to Elverson Road
01 Elverson Road to Lewisham

At Lewisham I leave the DLR for a transit across to Woolwich Arsenal via a Southeastern train in the form of a required 465047. On returning to the DLR the following moves where carried out.

08 Woolwich Arsenal to King George V
137 King George V to Woolwich Arsenal
154 Woolwich Arsenal to Canning Town

During this section of my run I was able to do a bit of plane spotting as I passed London City airport and saw G-LCYF and G-LCYF both are British Airways E190 and both are cops.

35 Canning Town to Abbey Road
55 Abbey Road to Stratford

Arriving at Stratford that was the end of my day with the DLR as I transferred to the National Network for a few runs starting with dud 378215 to take me to another bingo station in Hackney Central, where after only a 12-minute wait I picked up another dud 378 in 378257 to take me to new shack of Homerton. 4 minutes behind this train was my next move with a required 378206 to return me to Stratford. On my return to Stratford it’s off to the Central Line and required 92170 to take me to Newbury Park where after crossing to the opposite platform I only have a few minutes to wait for 92028 to take me back to Stratford.

Back at Stratford it was time for a PNB and a late lunch and to take stock of how I was doing on the bingo cards, I realised I had bitten off more than I can chew with 3 bingo cards over such a vast area and that I was stretching myself too much just to complete a line, either I had just come to my senses on this or by now I was starting to feel tired and couldn’t be bothered running about all over the place. So an executive decision was made. Sod the bingo cards!! Plan B came into play (actually Plan B never existed and I made it up as I went along – Ed.) So as I was at Stratford I thought I would stay around this area for units and shacks – first on the agenda was to clear all my DLR shacks and this was done as follows:

09 Stratford to Stratford International
07 Stratford International to Stratford High Street
148 Stratford High Street to Star Lane
124 Star Lane to West Silvertown
131 West Silvertown to Pontoon Docks
05 Pontoon Docks to London City Airport

As I arrived at London City Airport I spotted yet another British Airways E190 parked up in the form of G-LCYD, at this rate I would clear them too!! All the units above were required as well as the stations, the following runs though the units are required but dud shacks.

73 London City Airport to King George V
48 King George V to London City Airport
98 London City Airport to West Silvertown
96 West Silvertown to Canning Town
03 Canning Town to Poplar

Another five units knocked off the requirement list, although many more still needed, next batch of trips are both required units and shacks

90 Poplar to Devons Road
134 Devons Road to Pudding Mill Lane
26 Pudding Mill Lane to Canary Wharf
155 Canary Wharf to South Quay
129 South Quay to Island Gardens
150 Island Gardens to Deptford Bridge
15 Deptford Bridge to Greenwich
86 Greenwich to Cutty Sark
108 Cutty Sark to Islands Gardens
120 Island Gardens to Canary Wharf

On arriving at Cutty Sark this marked me completing all DLR stations, now I need to get the unit count down! From Canary Wharf I transfer my interest to the Stratford end of the Central line to cop the shacks there. Although it is now 1800 (and my train home is at 2100 – Ed.) and wanting to be back in London for 2000 to have time to get some food before heading home I just hope I will be able to get completed the stations I want to, although looking at the Central line fleet the numbering system confuses me and it is going to take me ages to complete the two car sets.

96018 Canary Wharf to Stratford
92110 Stratford to Epping
91040 Epping to Theydon Bois
92064 Theydon Bois to Debden
92033 Debden to Loughton
93032 Loughton to Buckhurst Hill
92047 Buckhurst Hill to Woodford
92254 Woodford to South Woodford
93430 South Woodford to Snaresbrook
92279 Snaresbrook to Leytonstone
92210 Leytonstone to Leyton
92103 Leyton to Bethnal Green
93098 Bethnal Green to St. Pauls
92237 St. Pauls to Chancery Lane
92114 Chancery Lane to Tottenham Court Road
51507 Tottenham Court Road to Euston

Having arrived back at London Euston just turned 2000 and having completed all the stations between Epping and Tottenham Court Road on the Central line it was now time to treat myself to a Prime Burger from Euston. After some food I head off to the platform for my journey home and to my great surprise it was required 390002 to take me North.

My plan to go out tomorrow after today is in the balance, I will have to see how I feel in the morning and my plan of a GWR day may not happen. I eventually arrive home at 2345 after leaving at 0615 this morning – a very long day!

Cracking read there and boy, that was one helluva long stint but certainly worthwhile, especially when you see how productive its been. Good idea that bingo. Maybe a one for the forum meet folks.

Hope you managed to get out the next day.

A S8 to Liverpool lime street, that is something which would be move of the year ;) Although you are not the first and probably won't be the last, just be careful at Norwich when you get a service to London Liverpool Street departing a few minutes after a service to Liverpool Lime Street, I do wonder how many foreign tourists have boarded the London train by mistake wanting Ely.

Very productive & long day on the DLR and LU :)

An excellent read as expected there, and wow at how much you got done! A long day indeed there, at more than 17 hours!

The numbering system on the Central line is indeed confusing, I think Keith is the only one on here who gets it! Shame the bingo thing didn't work out, maybe within Zones 1 and 2 it could work, and even better as a forum meet as 47403 suggests.

Sounds like a fun day in the Capital! Deciding against doing the bingo cards in the end was a good idea by the sounds of it. Congrats on the DLR shacks!

Well, after not getting home until 2345 last night after my London day I was not sure how today was going to pan out, as the alarm went off at 0530 I decided to have another half an hour, when at 0600 the alarm went off again I got up and had a quick shower before heading out, still not sure where I was going I headed off for Piccadilly station, on arriving at Piccadilly and having paid my £3 for all day parking I headed to the station, actually Greggs in fact for the habitual spotting breakfast of a bacon roll and coffee (I can be a creature of habit – Ed.) Still not too sure what I am going to do I head back onto the station and see 2 Virgin Trains stood in the station, so back off down south I go! I boarded dud 390010 and settled down in my seat to eat my breakfast, departing on time an uneventful trip down to London, as far as I am aware as I slept for a bit of it! On approaching London an idea for today started to form and on arriving at London Euston I headed straight down to the tube station and boarded required 11070 on the Victoria Line heading towards Brixton until it reached London Victoria where I left the train.

I located the next train to Gatwick Airport which was indicated to be going off platform 13 and was only just rolling in and was a 442, not what I wanted but then saw a 12 car 387 Gatwick Express on platform 14 and the signal had not been cleared for it so after consulting with the platform staff I quickly jumped on board at the first class section and walked through, like a lot of the so called first class sections on modern trains (that are not long distance) I didn’t think much of it, anyhow I find a seat on board 387211 for the trip to Gatwick Airport, I still can’t figure out why they call it “express”, apart from not stopping anywhere it is not that fast! On the journey down I am scribbling unit numbers down furiously and it is amazing how many I still need.

At Gatwick Airport I leave the train and find out its return journey is only 7 minutes off so I jump on the second of the three units that formed this train which was 387221 for the return trip to London Victoria. Next time I am down here doing this run I have to remember to turn on my Flightradar as there was quite a lot of planes stood on the threshold of the runway.

Back at London Victoria I thought “well I’ve done two of the three, might as well do the final one” so I jump aboard the third unit which is 387212 and head off back to Gatwick Airport on the not so quick Gatwick Express, the thing I have noted (which I had mentioned in a previous report when I saw these units on test at Crewe – Ed.) that to say they are billed as serving an Airport there is not much room for luggage and this was marked out by all three trips when luggage had to stowed in the aisle ways and vestibule entrances, hmm bit of an issue if an emergency happens!! Anyhow by now I am getting bored of running up and down between London Victoria and Gatwick so on arrival at Gatwick I bail and decide to head further south and this is done by the means of required units 377157 and 377109 to Brighton operating a Thameslink service. I board the latter at Gatwick as far as Balcombe where I then use the gangway to transfer to the former for the final stretch to Brighton, as we passed Three Bridges I noted my first three class 700’s in the form of 002, 103 and 106. First of many I hope.

Arriving at Brighton station I do not have a long wait for my next train which is required 313207 to take me to my first new shack of Portslade where after a 13-minute fester and a second required 313 arrives in the form of 313209 to take me to my next new shack, Lancing. I have to say I quiet like the Southern 313 units, although I don’t think I would like to do the trip to Portsmouth on one though.

At Lancing I have only a 10-minute wait and I am glad because the weather has taken a turn for the worst, windy and wet – welcome to the South Coast! When the train arrives it is a dud 313215 to take me to new shack of Southwick where after only a 3-minute wait required 377116 arrived to ferry me off to yet another new shack of Durrington-on-Sea, while travelling to Durrington-on-Sea I noted required 313202 parked in the sidings at West Worthing so on arriving as Durrington-on-Sea a quick change of platforms for a 6-minute fester and a required 377453 arrives to take me back to Worthing where I am able to pick up the required 313202 to take me to new shack of Fishergate. From Fishergate I pick up a dud 313207 to new shack of East Worthing where I pick up a required 377417 as far as dud station Worthing where I am able to pick up required 313201 as far as Goring-by-Sea for a long 20-minute fester for required 377122 to take me to my final required station between Brighton and Littlehampton and I leave the train at Aldrington.

After a 14-minute wait at Aldrington a dud 313208 arrives to return me to Brighton at 1650 where I got a sense of chaos was happening, whether it was because I had just come back from a quieter stations or that it was getting around rush hour I wasn’t sure, while deciding what to do next I saw with first-hand the issues that Southern/RMT are having when they cancelled a train due to staff issues. I decided to head out towards Seaford to grab some more shacks and boarded dud 313220, however before it departed I had a change of mind and left the train and decided to head back towards London then I wasn’t rushing later on, so I searched out the next train back to London and the first train was a 12-car 387 formed of 387214, 387209 and 387226 so I boarded 209 for the journey back, as we passed through Three Bridges yet another new 700 was spotted in 109. Although I never saw any in service. At Gatwick Airport I transferred from 387209 to 387214 for the remaining of the journey to London Victoria.

At London Victoria I decide to grab a few more station before heading home and have ear-marked the stations out as it would also include my first new bit of track for the day. I board a pair of required 377 units with the unit I settle in being 377625, where I remain as far as Streatham Hill where I transfer via the gangway to required 377609, although I do require Streatham Hill I can’t claim this one as I didn’t set foot onto the platform. I remain on the this train as far as new shack Crystal Palace where I leave the train and transfer to the platform 1 and waited for my planned train back….something wasn’t right, my train was not showing on the PIS, yet the train was shown still be running on RTT, it then dawned on me, I was on the wrong platform!! So once I located the correct platform, which was platform 4 I had 5 minutes to wait for my train and to be honest I’m glad I was on the wrong platform because platform 1 and 2 at Crystal Palace are non-descript platforms but when you get over to Platform 3 to 6 you have quite a bit of architecture plus a modern day roof like you have at Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly. After the 5 minutes required unit 377608, I leave the train at Streatham Hill (now I can count it! – Ed.) and have a 15-minute fester for my next train which will take me back into London for me to prepare for my trip home. When the train arrives it is another required unit and my first 455 of the day in the form of 455827.

On arriving at London Victoria 67018 is present with the Pullman coaching stock, I then headed down to the Victoria Line on the London Underground and boarded a required 11005 back to Euston. After grabbing some food I head to the platform only to find I have scored again with a required 390124 to take me back home, with nothing to report on the journey home it has been another excellent day and can’t wait for tomorrow as I now know what I am doing. Report to follow.

I didn’t think I would have got round to doing this, but sat in The Sheffield Tap with a pint at my side and half an hour until my next train seemed an opportune moment to try and get some work done on this. The reason being is I had a major disaster with my computer last week when it had crashed and burned without me backing up my spreadsheets since the end of March! So I am in the process of updating any my logs to bring them up to date (of course I am now backing them up on a regular basis – Ed.)

So the title should tell you everything. I am down to requiring 11 Northern pacers (4 x 144 and 7 x 142 units) and am off chasing them today. I was able to get some gen together as to what would be running around the Sheffield and Leeds areas and armed with this information I head on out to put a dent into the remaining units. I start my day at Salford Crescent station having just finished a night turn I am determined to stay up all day so that I can sleep tonight I board a dud 150206 to take me to Manchester Piccadilly, as we travel along the Windsor Link (the line between Ordsall Lane Junction and Salford Crescent) I notice that the overhead line posts have been erected and it will not be long before they reach Salford Crescent. After passing over Ordsall Lane Junction, at relative low speed, there is a massive crane in use to lift out an old road bridge to make way for the Ordsall Chord. Also visible is the footprint of where the new chord is going to connect at either end. Also you can see that in one of the compounds they have started building sections of the chord bridge to lift into place. Rest of the trip is uneventful.

On arriving at Manchester Piccadilly I head off to Greggs to purchase some breakfast, the usual fayre a bacon roll but a bottle of orange juice (already had 3 mugs of coffee before leaving work, anymore and I would be as high as a kite on caffeine – Ed.) on returning to the station the first section of ticket barriers has been installed although they are not yet operational. I head to platform 1 to find that my gen was correct and my first cop of the day was Northern 150268 which is working the stopping service to Sheffield, just glad this was a required 150 on this service and not a required 142 as it is a long journey as far as Edale on a 142! The train was quite busy when travelling through the Peak District as school parties kept getting on and off and I had a feeling it was all co-ordinated as one party got off at a station, another party got on and this happened a couple of times.

At Sheffield I didn’t have long to wait for my next train and this trip is a short return hop to Meadowhall on board required 142070, where with a +2 it was a quick trip across from platform 2 to platform 3 to pick a return train which was a required 158784 to Sheffield. On my return I have over an hour until my next move so the trains were noted and I sat and chilled for a while until required 144007 arrived to form the 1153 to Adwick which I boarded as far as Meadowhall, this time instead of returning to Sheffield I cross to platform 4 awaiting the arrival of the next train to Leeds, after a 10-minute wait required 144012 (what do they call it…the e-pacer?) arrives to take me on, as my next required unit is some time off I decide to do a bit of station bashing for a while and stay on 144012 as far as required shack of Elescar.

At Elescar I cross the platform with a +9 and dud 144023 arrives to take me to Chapeltown where I leave the train and make a blunder by walking the long way around through the ASDA car park. Note to anyone visiting here, via the ASDA car park is a 9-minute walk…..via other entrance a 2-minute walk!! Also I noticed a Wetherspoons just outside the station which I will have to remember for future reference. Anyhow I just make it for my next trip which is on dud 144015 as far as Wombell were with a +12 until dud 150210 arrives, all the stations between Sheffield and Barnsley have now been completed and on my return to Sheffield I have a +19 wait for a dud 142092 to take me to required shack Shireoaks (as well as new track) to have a +6 for a required 142091 to take me back to Sheffield. On the journey back I noticed a pub right opposite one of the Kiveton stations, can’t quite remember which one but I will have to remember it for the time I am around these stations copping them. Back at Sheffield I have a +58 for what should be my next cop of the day. So it is off to The Sheffield Tap for a pint of Lord Marbles and sat next to the open window watching the trains go by and working on this log. Not a bad way to pass an hour. Anyhow it came time to head to the platform having got a considerable way into this log, I ma ke my way over to platform 4 and not what is in the station and thought that my gen for throughout the day hasn’t been too bad as al apart from one that I had seen had been what was booked. I spoke too soon, my next train I was supposed to be going on was supposed to be a required 144 but turned out to be a dud and seeing it was quite busy I thought I would give it a miss and decide to head off home as there was a TPE service in just over 20 minutes’ time. So I head to the other side of the station and notice a lot of people waiting for the train, it was the 1611 service. I decide to give it a go and dud 185145 arrives with the first class and everyone piles towards the middle of the train and I thought this is good I may stand a chance with the secret compartment and I did. I managed to get a fold down chair and continue to type this upon my knee and have my phone on charge and with only another 3 people present (two listening to tunes and the other reading) it is quieter than a quiet coach on other trains…peace. With only one more train journey to do and an early finish I have copped six units and four stations, although to my normal standard this isn’t many I am happy and content. It has been a tidying up day and am now down to 2 x 144 and 5 x 142 units to clear both classes and with just over two years to complete this task I am quietly confident and with another possible trip for tomorrow looming it looks like it might prove a couple of profitable days.

Back at Manchester Piccadilly after just missing my train by a few minutes I have another 20 minutes to wait for the next train to Salford Crescent and when that eventually turns up on a crowded platform it is formed by a pair of dud 156 units and I climb aboard 156472 to take me back to Salford Crescent. I did notice another section of the bridge has been taken down during the day to make way for the Ordsall Chord.

I think it's Kiveton Bridge which has the pub outside (and is a level crossing shack)

Sounded like a good day with some pacers cleared

It must have been really annoying with the computer but hopefully it won't take you too long to update the spreadsheets.

Sounds like a good time there but I'm sure you must have been shattered by the end of the day!

Bad news about the computer. My advice would be to use a cloud based backup. I use Google Drive (there are loads of others) and whilst a copy is stored on my laptop it also backs it up to the cloud. It also allows me to access the files on any computer I use, should I wish. It is handy for when on the move and I can access the files on my phone.

I do use Google Drive....unfortunately I hadn't uploaded my data in ages!!

HST Bashing - Saturday 16th July 2016
My alarm went off at 6am, and strangely enough I felt fully refreshed after yesterday’s long day… but that is where my troubles began. My plan for today was to head up to Newcastle for the few 142 units I require, however when I woke this morning I had another idea. What about all the GWR 43’s I need!! So I agonised over this dilemma while I showered and prepared my packed breakfast and lunch, still after completing all my little jobs I still hadn’t made a decision and then I thought of a way to decide….I checked the weather forecast. Newcastle sunny 18c, Reading sunny spells 25c – SUMMER!!!!!! So choice made and it’s off to Reading.

I leave my m=home not much after my choice was made and the weather in Manchester is awful, absolutely throwing it down with rain. So it is off in the car to Piccadilly station, I’m trying to avoid using the Metrolink at the moment if I am doing any long distance travel as the trams are all terminating at Deansgate-Castlefield while they complete St. Peters Square tram stop and if I am having a long day it is a pain in the back side.
Arriving at Manchester armed with a prepared coffee and homemade breakfast (trying to save a bit of money as well as watching my calorie intake as I really have been gorging myself these last few weeks, how long it will last is another matter – Ed.) I have 5 minutes until my London train so just walk straight on to dud 390141 and into the standard unreserved coach and sit down, wanting a nice quiet journey down to London I am not too pleased when a group of loud people come and sit opposite me, but then I hear the announcement of Weekend First for £20, so I am now sat in 1st class writing up this section of my report in the peace and quiet and plenty of space to spread out heading south.

Arriving in London a couple of minutes early I decide instead of going to Euston Square and pick up a direct tube train I would go for bit more bashing of tube stock I head downstairs at Euston and pick up required 51610 of the Northern Line for the short trip to Kings Cross St Pancras where I then scurry through the tunnels to the Hammersmith & City/Circle/Metropolitan lines (might have been as quick walking from Euston to Kings Cross St. Pancras – Ed.) As I arrive on the platform there is already a train in so I immediately jump on required 21051, only to find out it was a Metropolitan line train and I would have to change again, oh well at least it was required.
At Baker Street I leave this train and only have to wait 4 minutes for the correct train and to my surprise (well not actually – Ed.) it was another required unit in the form of 21390. I finally arrive at London Paddington and see my first 166 in the GWR livery in the train shed although I do not think it was showing itself in all its glory and splendour that that livery should do. Anyhow there were 4 HST sets in the station with the first one due to depart in 5 minutes time and a quick dash along the platform showed I required both power cars while on the adjoining platform, which was due to depart 5 minutes later than the one I was getting on I required one of the power cars. So I boarded the 1030 to Weston-Super-Mare formed of required 43022 and 43151 for the 30 minute ride out to Reading. En-route there was half a dozen 66’s parked up. I won’t bore you with them because with the response I saw from Trainspotting Live it might have been a bit of overkill on the 66 front.
Arriving at Reading I only have to cross to the other side of the island platform and a 5 minute wait for the service to Penzance formed of a dud 43191 on the front but required 43146 on the rear for a trip to the next stop which will be my first new shack of the day. The journey was hampered by signal issues but that did not bother me because my return was a +20 and my return trip was late due to “disruptive passenger”.

Arriving at Pewsey, my first new shack of the day, is a quaint little station and a very limited service, according to the PIS the next train from London is in two hours’ time and the next train after the one I am getting is three hours and forty-five minutes later!! I didn’t mind the delay as it was on a nice warm summers day and on a pleasant station. When the train arrived it was a pair of duds in the form of 43062 and 43142 to take me back to Reading. On arriving at Reading I have a +16 wait for my next service which is formed of required 43005 and 43041 both in the new GWR livery and looking very smart.

I’m only on this train for a short time and arrive at my next new shack of Didcot Parkway quite quickly and leave the train taking a photo of 43041 before it leaves. There are two class 66’s parked up in the sidings and the blue steam engine that was on Trainspotters Live was playing in the Museum, the train I was planning to get back was running 25 minutes late due to a signalling fault somewhere and I had an option to get a 165 back towards Reading but I decided to hang on for the late runner as today is about HST bashing (for now) and I’m glad I did as it was led by required 43181 with a dud 43143 on the rear.

Back at Reading I have a +20 for my next train so after a mooch and a few photos taken of Turbostars I head to my platform for the arrival of the 1428 to Bristol Temple Meads formed of required 43152 and 43010 to take me to my next new shack at Chippenham.

On arriving at Chippenham the full scale of the signalling fault comes to light as my next planned service has been cancelled as it was diverted via Bristol Parkway, so with a bit of extra time I notice a pub outside the station called The Old Road Tavern and decide it would be a good idea to nip in for a quick pint, and what a quick pint it was! It was so nice I had finished it in 5 minutes, too many of them and it could be dangerous, for those who are interested it was a pint of HPA by Wye Valley Brewery.

So, after that quick pint I’m able to get back to the station for the next train back to Swindon which is the only none GWR HST move I do on a dud 158766. On arriving at Swindon the train terminates and I leave the train for a +10 to pick up a Cheltenham Spa to London Paddington service formed of a pair of good 43’s in the form of 43161 and 43139 only as far as Didcot Parkway in the hope of picking up another pair of required HST power cars, unfortunately that did not happen, however I did get the GWR green set again that I had earlier for my trip back to Reading.

On arriving at reading it is time for some food so I end up at the pub on the station for some pub grub and a pint. Once suitably refreshed its back to the station and as the day is drawing to an end I am hoping for a swansong on an HST and I am not disappointed as required 43017 and 43154 trundle in to take me back to London Paddington, as passing Acton Main Line a whole new batch of locomotives were parked up from this morning so noted them down too.

Back at Paddington I see some new HST’s that I still require and I am gutted that I have to leave them as I need to head home, especially after finding out what would be normally a 2 hour 8-minute journey at the most is going to be a 2 hour 30-minute journey tonight. I head down to the District and Circle lines platform to find that there only seems to be District line trains running this evening which means changing at Edgware Road, which under normal circumstances would be good but I just now want to start heading home after a long day. So the first train to Edgware Road was a required 21487 followed by yet another required 21513 which I take as far as Euston Square where I walk round to Euston and had just missed a train by a couple of minutes and had another 40 minutes to wait, which passed pretty quickly and I board dud 390115 to take me back to Manchester. Again like this morning I upgrade to first class and there seems to be a lot of…well, no way nicely to put this, riff raff in first class. If you are travelling first class I believe you should act a bit more refined. I don’t know whether I am old fashioned that way or just the way I was brought up. Also it was amazing the number of people moved to standard class when challenged by the train manager for the upgrade fee. I also find out why the timings are so long as not long after leaving London Euston we are on the slow lines and I notice engineering marker boards in place for a T3 possession on the two fast lines. To me this seems early as it was not even 9pm.

I’m now approaching Stockport as I am typing this and I cannot see much more to add so I am going to put this report live before I even get back to Manchester. It has been a cracking two days and today has planted some seeds for a future 2 day trip.

A cracking reading there Andy, you've certainly had a bit of a clearout over them 3 trips, plenty winners, so a few very productive trips out. I don't quite know how you finished a night shift, then went straight out and had a day on the rails but still managed to get up at 6am, the following morning, I'd have been like a zombie, You'd have had to whack me round the back of the head with a bat, just to get my eyes facing forward, nevermind open.

Plus thats 2 of you folk on here, thats seen 144015 recently and had it for haulage, it's still my last 144 for sight. I need to get into Yorkshire and Manchester, as soon as I get a chance.

Good luck updating them records, its gonna be a nightmare and a true labour of love, getting them up to date. Hope its done sooner rather than later.

First of all, before I forget to comment on it, I loved the comment you made about 66s and that awful BBC Four programme Trainspotting Live. Less flapping about 66s and less frothing about steam in the first one, and not wasting time with the mathematics nonsense, would have made the first episode more appealing. Fortunately I'd recorded it so could fast forward past the boring bits. Dr Fry having a proper flail and bellow, however, would have made it that much better!<D

Anyway, sorry to go on about that! Truely a good couple of days for you on the rails, seems everyone's getting the E-Pacer in lately, still required here. A South Yorkshire bash is more than required here for shacks, let alone chasing Pacers, hmm that gets me thinking...Sheffield Tap is required too, hmm...

Sure did well on the HSTs too, a very wise call in my eyes. Certainly want to get on some HSTs again, the Moves Envy is real! Well done on so many scores there, you'll have to get down this way again one day eh? Forget the Pacers! ;)

A decision well made there! I can't believe you had to use the weather forecast to choose between pacers and trams. That's insane ;)! Sounds like a great time and, like Tech, I want to get back onto trams again soon. I haven't had any this month!

Well done in getting Pewsey into the book as like you said it is slightly limited in service levels. Who knows it may change when the wiring is up to Newbury
