All,

I planned to go from Grimsby to Lincoln next Sunday. But as there are crappy transport links (2,5+ hours) I rather stay in Grimsby or head somewhere else.

Any suggestions what to visit from Grimsby on a Sunday?

Jesus, this reminds me of last night. I watched This Is England. Perhaps sit on the platform and contemplate the futility of life?

Go to Cleethorpes - Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway - a narrow guage railway is at the south end of the promenade. Buses available from Grimsby if there is no convenient rail service.

Don't just wait in Grimsby!

(even people I know who are from there are not complimentary about it)

..and if you still have time to spare, take a walk around Cleethorpes Country Park?

Find a way to leave Grimsby sooner. I spent 10 minutes there once, it was 9 1/2 too long

Oddly enough I have just spent last weekend in that area. Staying in Scunthorpe infact which was a lot better than I was expecting. In Grimbsy itself there is the fishing museum, where as well as viewing the exhibits and a nice cafe, there is a 1957 trawler which has guided tours by an ex fisherman which although may sound dull, I found it very interesting and would not like to have worked on one. Very hard life indeed.

Then, as mentioned above, go to Cleethorpes and the light railway which I did and enjoyed, again they have a nice cafe and also the smallest Pub on the platform, all at the middle station.

We also visited, and you may need a car really, the Lincoln Transport museum between Lincoln and Newark, The Lincolnshire Wolds Railway, Gainsborough Model Museum which is fantastic and the best of all, a two hour standard gauge brake van trip all around Scunthorpe Steel Works, they don't do them often, but that was the highlight of the trip.

Getting back to Grimbsy, again I had preconceptions about what it was like, but infact both there and Scunthorpe were fine.

We also did some of the Saturday only services and those going to Cleethorpes and back were very busy and noisy & rather beery on the way back.

Have fun.

Leave - Quickly! ;)

You should be able to find a decent fish and chip lunch if nothing else - even if the fish isn't landed there now. There is Grimsby dock tower and some nice dock yard office buildings if you like that kind of thing. You could always head to the sea front at Cleethorpes and have a walk.

Find the largest group of people you can and sing "We are Imps" at the top of your voice. Ensure you have a pre-planned escape route before you do this.......No wait that's just what I do for entertainment in Grimsby (and to a lesser extent Boston) :D .

As a now expat Grimbarian, I endorse the suggestion to go to Cleethorpes, where all the trains start from anyway. (NB if starting your trip during the summer you are well advised to board at Cleethorpes as the train is likely to be packed at it arrives at Grimsby, with any reservations strangely missing)

Apart from the toy train, I recommend fish and chips at "Steels": be prepared for a queue on a sunny Sunday.

You can take a stroll along the prom, spend a little time in the amusements or, if you like a beer or two, indulge in the CAMRA Tour which includes the No. 2 Refreshment Room - ideally situated at Cleethorpes Station.

If you do have time, and the inclination, the Fishing Heritage Museum is very good. Unfortunately, the docks and hinterland are now secured from the public .

That's a fact...

As I visited several English cities (because of club 92), Grimsby easily jumps in the top 5 of most depressing football league towns (if not top 3...).

Eventually I spent the day in Cleethorpes which is quite nice.

i always liked going to Grimsby - we went through a period of winning games 1-0 there against the run of play usually via dodgy penalty ;)

I went to Grimsby a few weeks ago, although it was a weekday not a Sunday, the town centre near the main station wasn't too bad (better than I was expecting), the walk through the older part of town towards Grimsby Docks and New Clee stations was quite despairing (charity shops, cheque cashing shops, dodgy looking locals).

But, that is the way into the docks. There is a road bridge over the line near New Clee Station, on what was Humber Bridge Road (not the big new suspension bridge!). The road is closed to traffic but there is a gate for pedestrians heading to Youngs offices and factory and the rest of the docks area. From there wander around the old docks at your leisure - if that floats your boat . Then walk out past the security lodge at Murray Street.

I assume, like a railway station, that the area is 'deemed consent' for access purposes, given the vast range of businesses within the expanded docks boundary, they cannot possibly check every individual vehicle / person going in through the main entrance even. Providing you behave and do not attract attention to yourself, no-one will even notice you are there.

The comedian Jeremy Hardy on the radio today was likening Lowestoft on a Sunday to a dire day, so maybe you're lucky being in Grimsby!
