158752 is reported back in service today, on services around Bradford, Leeds, York and Hebden Bridge, and 'stretching her legs' to Blackpool later in the day.

Here she is at New Pudsey:

Nice memory foam seating and large coloured screens for PIS (although it wasn't working and only saying "York"

Replaced by a 150/2 (one which had previously worked the 10:02 Leeds - Nottingham service (and back)

Seen some stuff on facebook today from Northern, including this photo.
Looks nice and shiny, but the carpet looks grubby like it's been down for years...shirley it should be the same colour as the seats :(

That looks pretty good... do the tables in the centre car still have the wood-effect tops or have they all been replaced?

I know there's already a thread for the e144 but it hasn't been used for ages- just had my first run on it (from Huddersfield to Mirfield) and it was pretty nice- certainly I think the commuters of South Wales wouldn't be disappointed with a fleet of those! Only real criticism is that the destination display is too small to show "Wakefield Westgate" so was showing "Wakefield West".

So if I'm right, it should be running 1B26 the 1427 out of York after coming in on 1B19 the 1111 from Blackpool North? Can anyone confirm? I aim to get it through Lostock Hall on 1B26 at around 1640.

Great to see that Northern are upgrading their trains. This will make people have a more pleasant experience while travelling the north. The refurbished Class 158 I can't wait to see and hopefully ride.

Shouldn't it be "this is a northern service to xxx" as opposed to "this is the northern service to xxx"?

Bugs me on the 319s too......

Ditto.

If it were "This is the 00:00 Northern service to xxx" then I'd have no problem.

I got this shot of it through Lostock Hall yesterday. Bit blurred on the front but I think it still looks alright.

Is there any update on 150275?

Having gone up at the same time as 158752 and being 2 coached, would have expected it to be back first.

Apparently a comment on WNXX that Northern don't regard it as transformational enough so may be subject to change including new seats.

I would certainly go along with that retaining the old seats makes it look dated and look little better than the usual Northern refurb. Of course the down side with that is that the old seats may be more comfortable than the new on current form.

I would say the carpet is too light, on the plus side the new external colour scheme is a lot better than the current god awful Northern colour scheme.

The lady at the new seats roadshow said the chosen seats may also be fitted to existing stock- at the time this 158 was being worked on so any decision would have come too late for that one anyway. If the 155 ends up with new seats, here's hoping that they're a few inches higher to counteract the ridiculously shallow windows!

Northern do have to refurbish all their DMUs (except the Pacers and 153s) by the end of 2019 so it might be new seats would have to be a phase 2 refurbishment to ensure all the units get some attention by 2019.

If they do get new seats I suspect it will largely only be 158's which will make them more comparable with the CAF units on Connect services.

If the 155 I was on the other week was typical of the 155s then they have broken seats held together by gaffer tape so they do need new seats or seats transferred from other trains which get new seats.

It's currently working 2M00 07:18 LDS-MCV. To say nothing to write home about would be kind - I was also hoping for the ATW treatment.

First new-look Northern DMU in traffic

The first refurbished Northern Class 158 entered traffic at the end of October.

Three-car 158752 has been fitted with new carpets and seat cushions, LED lighting has been installed, designated wheelchair spaces in the carriages have been introduced, and ‘call for aid’ buttons have been installed. The on-board toilets have also been refurbished and fitted with improved baby changing facilities.

“Our trains will be phased in and out of refurbishment in order to ensure minimum impact on our daily services, and we are excited to welcome this first milestone - our first train back in service for our customers,” said Northern Managing Director Alex Hynes.

For more on the '158', read RAIL 813, published on November 9.

Indeed compared to an ATW 158 it doesn't look that good, I guess the budget is a lot less, a bit same old, same old, we have come to expect from Northern.

Even the choice of colours for the Seat Fabric and Carpet doesn't work together very well, I'm not sure about the choice of the plain looking fabric for the seats either.

Yeah, I think the plain seat fabric will show up stains too much.

The white livery looks terrible - cheap and unfinished. The same overlay on a silver background would look good, though.

(And has anyone else noticed the N-in-circle looks like a sad face? :) )

I would have to disagree about the livery I think it looks quite good and a big improvement on fussy but dull old livery. The only thing I would change would be the front fairing and paint it yellow or blue rather than grey.

Looks like a redecoration rather than a refurbishment.
To me a a refurbishment is where all mechanical componants are overhauled too.
I hope my knees will now fit but I don't live in hope.

Have power sockets/USB charging points been installed? And what about WiFi? Wasn't this within the specification?

It looks similar to the GWR refurbishment, certainly the same PIS which needs some work as it tends to repeat the same uninformative message for the entire journey!
