A Banner repeater, one that is located that has a siding off the line as well, does the banner come off with the sub-signal ?
Obviously it comes off with the Main Aspect, but in the middle of a 'discussion' about it clearing for a GPL too ? we say not.

Given that the main signal shows a red aspect while any associated position light signal is cleared, the banner repeater will stay on.

Banner off would mislead the driver into expecting a yellow aspect or better.

Thats what we thought...thought we were going mad when we were told otherwise ! when they say it so many times, you then question your own thoughts !

Just a thought, surely the PL signal wouldn't come off until later anyway? Thus meaning you've passed the banner before it clears due to timers etc.

They're not necessarily that slow to clear (not that you'd ever assume that they would when driving a train; the golden rule with this sort of thing is to act upon what you actually see/hear, not what you expect you could). There are a number of position light signals which can be seen displaying an "off" indication from a fair distance away - for example, sidings with comparatively high speeds. Admittedly I can't think of any with an associated banner repeater, though there are some with Off indicators.

That's another thing - many of the position lights found at the ends of platforms will correspond to a lit Off indicator when cleared, though not all. This can help greatly for guards/platform staff dispatching empty stock movements, but drivers wouldn't usually use an Off indicator as an indication of a proceed/permissive aspect anyway.

Most GPLs wont be released until the train is almost at a stand at the signalso no the banner wont be off for the GPL because the banner will be much further away.

Isn't an "off sub" visual usually provided in this situation?

"Off Main"/"Off Sub" indications exist, but only as rear indicators on the back of a signal, not independently.

We've got a terminus station, with a siding just outside. The banner comes off with the GPL, but I suppose it has to!

I was just thinking that, I was in the cab today being driven at a banner which came off when the associated subsidiary signal came off.

They have replaced the BR's at Brighton from mechanical ones to LED ones. You used to hear the old ones clank as they went off, so you would then look to double check. Now you have to keep glancing at it. (a watched BR never changes).

Southern land does like it's 'off' indicators. In SWT it's all BR's, and Havant looks like they got a job lot on the cheap there are so many. The problem with the off' is some are so dim and when they fail there is never any hurry to fix them. One at preston park was out for ages and you had to keep phoning up the driver to check for a proceed aspect as the cab hid the signal from the platform. (and it was on the loop, so it was often red.
