Don't forget though, a 442 has half the motors that one REP unit had, so the REP's limitation would only be neared with a 10 car. Unless power supplies will/have been upgraded since then?

Yes, but you had one REP for a 12-car train, so a pair of 442s is roughly equivalent.

I think its per set and then the electronics and computer works out what's what. I know that a 10 car is quite sluggish compared to a 5 car.

The only time we have to go switching out TCU & ACU is when you get odd length formations such as 13 or 15 cars and then only when told to by fleet control.

Will they get equipped with regenerative braking as part of the retractioning?

Of course only 20% of the axles on the unit are motored, so the benefits might not be that large. However in a modern AC drive regenerative braking is now a standard part of the package. The main problem would be what to do with the regenerated energy. Most (not sure if it's all) of the DC network is now cleared for regenerated power to be fed back into the third rail. However you still have to be able to dissipate the energy in resistor banks on board if for some reason (for example the local voltage is already at its limit) the third rail can't accept it. So space under the motor coach would presumably need to be found for these.

Thinking about it, Vossloh Kiepe must have cracked these problems (and the associated one of controlling the brakes on the trailer cars in harmony with the new traction/braking package) on the 455s, so I doubt there will be much of a technical problem.

442s are one motor per axle on the MLC, so that vehicle is a Bo-Bo.

That would be correct as there's a TMCOS which means you can isolate one pair of motors independently from the other. If you operated it down at Poole on a 5 car, it was a failure as you weren't allowed to try and climb out of Parkstone on two motors due to the steep gradient.

First post - so be gentle with me!

I saw a 10 coach 442 going south through Burgess Hill towards Brighton at about 15:05 (May 4th). Took me by surprise. Thought they had all departed. Anyone any ideas why?

The final six units are still technically on lease to GTR and have to be kept in operational condition before hand back to Angel. They are therefore being used on empty stock workings to keep them working.

Do you think they'll still see any passenger use?:D

Do they still have all their seats they had in their SWTs days (but probably reupholstered)?

In the motor coach, apart from the guard's office is it seats end to end or is the buffet still there albeit locked oou?

No all of them were refurbished, being the ex-Gatwick Expres units with new seats, PIS and changed the layout. First class in the motor coach was a controversial decision

With their current traction package, what causes the "pop" noise when they stop taking power and coast? (Don't think it's worth starting a new thread for this)

So hopefully when that idea is dead and buried, FG will take on the remaining 6 units to give them the complete fleet and more operational flexibility.

More or less, it would be better to have them all in service though, it makes the service more robust.

If they could get their hands on the remaining 6, would that be enough for all Waterloo-Portsmouth trains to be 2x442?
