Any old/unwanted/unused OS maps going?

As many of you know, I’m a primary teacher. I’ve recently been given some money to buy resources. The school is well equipped with a good set of atlases to compare the country pre-1960s to Googlemap images of now... I’ve ordered new atlases, but one of the areas I have identified as needing work is the use of maps and map skills.
Buying new OS maps is a fantastic idea, but very expensive. I’ve sent a few messages to people on the Facebook buying/selling page, but I thought I would ask in here also. Primarily interested in York/Selby, Dales and any contrasting environments/towns akin to Tadcaster.

I know it is a cheeky request, but if you don’t ask you don’t get!!

I would agree that paper maps are a different experience.

Without knowing what you actually want, or what your budget is - and forgive me if this an egg sucking lesson - apart from the usual second hand/collectors sources (ebay, charity shop (Oxfam Chipping Norton specialise in that sort of thing, and do on line/postal service), etc.), I think - certainly for something to hand out to the kids - I would be looking at print from on line. Apart from streetmap (mentioned above - hint, in firefox print from print preview lets you only print the map bit), the OS themselves have options: look at their website (I see they have a 3 for £20 offer on paper maps at the moment), their online OS Map Premium option is not that expensive, and lets you print 'standard' (Landranger, etc.) mapping at A4 or A3, or there are various free 'Open Data' products. Or look at https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/education/teachers/digimap-for-schools.html to see what it gives you - and from a quick look, I don't think I can usefully suggest anything else - I see they mention NLS for old mapping.

Another tip, in case you're not aware already - a very useful piece of software to have is a 'print to pdf' program (various free ones available, including dopdf and pdf24), which lets you - when you've decided what you want to print - create that as a pdf, which you can reprint as required (without going back to square one) - useful if you can only access something on a temporary basis.

I've got seventeen copies* of the 7th series OS map of Wensleydale (sheet 90) that I picked up from a library some years back. I had the vague intention of using them in the classroom, but never did. (I've since moved from classrooms to lecture theatres, and won't be needing them.) They're yours for the cost of postage if you'd like them, just drop me a PM.

*At a glance, fifteen are dated 1955 and two are 1961. I don't know if there are any material differences in the mapped area.

What area do they cover? I've just had a quick google, but it seems the new sheet 90s are the Keswick areas! I would love them, if it would be alright? We've put the Dales down on our wishlist as there are a number of features within the area that would be nice for the children to see and identify. I'm doing quite well at this now... Got most of the Dales area from Hull, 17 copies of Wensleydale from you, and another Geography coordinator on Facebook gets sent bulk copies of 30s every week, so I'm getting those as well!!

I’ve got a few spare ones Bayum. I sort of collect them (although not seriously) and recently separated some to go to the charity shop that I had duplicates of.
I’ll have a look through the spares I’ve got and pm you (you can just have them anyway as it’s for a great cause).
A few years ago I laid all of them out in the garden and made a massive map of the mainland UK just to see what I actually had.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had at least three quarters of the country (including quite a few from the 1950s/60s).
God I love OS maps... Wonderful things.

1950s would be the old 1 inch series. The numbering was different from the 1:50,000 Landranger series.

Quite. Sheet 90 in the one-inch series covers Settle, Garsdale and Askrigg. It looks like it's roughly equivalent to sheet 98 in the modern 1:50,000 series.

Thank you. We're a North Yorkshire school so borrowing from West Yorkshire libraries is always a little difficult. Past conversations with the English coordinator suggest that we don't subscribe to or haven't borrowed from any North Yorkshire school library service. I was looking for something a little more permanent that we could keep in school.

I have about 25 different maps 1" to 1 mile 7th series (roughly 1965), but none around you, mainly Scotland. They were full sheet but now folded roughly in eighths.

I wonder if you could register with Edina Digimap, and print some out in A3?

Have you contacted your local forces unit? They will almost certainly have a lot of OS maps for adventurous training, and will need the newest, and have to bin the old.

Unfortunately we don’t have enough money within the geography budget to cover a subscription, whether it’s £70 or what. If we find that we want to do more using the maps I’ve acquired, I can always raise the question later in the yesr, particularly when we are comparing and contrasting the UK to areas in other countries and continents.

Do you need any of the maps that I have and gave you the details yesterday? if not, I shall take them back to my shop when I am there next?

Our local library sold off a load of old OS maps (nationwide - I got one for Norfolk, although I live in Kent) a couple of years ago in a book sale at pretty low rates. Most of the ones I saw seemed hardly used.

Maybe you could approach the local library service and others could look out for them?
