What happened to chiltern railways' onboard announcements? They did away with them about 2 years ago. I used to like having an announcement
Hence missed alterations if units split, or terminated short of destinationhence ipod+sound cancelling headphones =
I hate announcements on trains, particularly on our 175's, hence ipod+sound cancelling headphones =
The 175s have to be the worst. The intonation is completely wrong.I hate announcements on trains, particularly on our 175's, hence ipod+sound cancelling headphones =
p.s. My favourite is when the robot says 'I apologise for the delay...' or whatever. Who is actually apologising?
I assume it would be the voice over artist (they're full of empathy for the pax!) apologising for the delay. However, the majority of the recorded announcements will say, "We are sorry for this delay", or "TOC apologises for this delay" or "On behalf of TOC, we apologise for this delay".
** I still occasionally expect both Phil and Celia to 'share' an announcement when I hear 'we' - taken in the literal sense to mean the recorded voices in the system.
*** Remember the SWT 458s which had to be taken out of service because their displays fell foul of the regulations by 3 whole millimetres?
The 458s are awful trains - they've been a problem since they first came into service. It's a shame that SWT couldn't replace them with 450s!
I think SWT were the first TOC to have all it's automated announcements comply with the DDA. London Midland's 350s make few announcements.
The complainents are all people travelling on suburban services with frequent stops. I agree that constant announcements can be annoying. If the same announcements were made on an Intercity service, people wouldn't complain.
I remember travelling on SWT's Portsmouth-Southampton services when they first transferred to 450 stock. You'd get the train's calling pattern, approach announcements, at station and next station announcements. They got rid of the calling pattern announcements after a few months!
SHUT UP
Electrostars keep telling me which coach I'm in... I KNOW WHAT BLOODY COACH I'M IN!
Arrrrgghh!

Not been on a 159 for a while so not sure what the announcements are like. I'd rather have some announcements on a train rather than none. I don't like the eerie silence you get on some trains - need to hear a noise so I know I'm still awake/alive!
You might want to try and avoid 159022...The centre coach of that was bad!!! but supprisingly no anouncements...

Do people not find announcements by the staff MORE annoying? I find they often require more attention over what is usually a poor quality mic/speaker system.

As far as I know, Chiltern units have never used automated announcements, but I'm willing to be corrected on this.
Going back to I/We, even the SWT system still has the voice artists referring to themselves; "I'm sorry to inform you that this service has been reported as full and standing", "I'm sorry - there will be no catering facilities on this train today", "I'm sorry for the short formation of this train today" etc.
That's quite a scary thought actually; Phil, Celia and the Scottish woman all chiming in together... "We are sorry for the delay to this service"!
