Mention has been made of the fact that these trains are only likely to attract short haul passengers - due to the many stops. Regarding those that enter south Wales, much depends on how timings allow changes at Bristol between the Cross Country trains and those going in/out of south Wales. Someone who is going from Cardiff to Plymouth, for example, might well decide to stay on the GWR stopping train all the way - even if it added 25 minutes to the journey compared to switching to Cross Country for the south-west leg of the trip. Throw in the fact that the Cross Country train might be an overcrowded Voyager and GWR might offer a lower fare on their service, and it can be easy to see that these trains could well indeed attract long distance passengers. The route at present is operated by old Sprinters. When the public realise (hopefully by GWR promoting the fact) that HST’s are now operating these trains with plenty of seats, and we could well see growth in passenger numbers on this route. If the fares are low enough, it could well attract day trippers from Cardiff & Newport to Teignmouth & Dawlish. So, some form of catering would be a good idea. I hope that sufficient coaches are stored because if demand rises, they may want to lengthen these trains to 5 coaches. So, an ideal opportunity to grow the business prior to assessing what type of new train would replace these mini HST’s.

Having trawled through this thread I haven't been able to establish the seating capacity of the 4 car HSTs, and I refer to the final versions, not the one currently in operation. Will the seating be high density, low density or something different? As I read in the sets will be formed of 1 x TGS, 1 x TSD, 2 x TS.

Clarification would be much appreciated.

As far as I'm aware the seating hasn't been changed. I'm not sure if a disabled toilet and seating area has been added to the current set in service?

No it hasn't not yet but I believe the TSD is at Doncaster now.

I'm surprised some of the good names of the Scotrail power cars haven't been renamed on the ones that are staying such as; IKB (43003), Micheal Eavis (43026), Glorious Devon (43027), University of Worcester (43053), University of Plymouth (43149), GWR 175th Anniversary (43175), Great Western (43185) they should have been kept on other GWR power cars.

Named ones are being denamed upon going green, sadly.

'Twas done pre-short set mods. Original batch, with numbers relocated and all that.

Caught it today with 43198 leading, very smooth ride. Is the other 43 always the same?

Didn’t have time to ID it due rushing for a +0 at Liskeard.

On the naughty step again.
Indeed so, in this case it doesn't matter that a HST has a higher overall top speed than a sprinter, rather that the HST GTI's can match or come closer to the acceleration and deceleration offered by that relative to a Sprinter. The linespeeds will virtually remain the same down in the West Country (bar the sections from Exeter to Bristol to Cardiff where a HST GTI will be able to take advantage of the higher line speed), the main advantage will be the dropping of at least 3 / 4 vehicles including the heavier TRFB.

Is a "Sprinter" at about 3.7 horse power per ton really quicker up to say, 70 mph than a four coach HST at about 15 horse power per ton? I realise that it's all a matter of gearing - or how the transmission is tuned - but I'd have thought a half sized HST would take off like a rocket - in train terms.
Crumbs!

The ScotRail driver training HSTs are all four coaches, and anecdotally are easily outperforming the existing sprinters.

I was on a 2+4 HST today 09:47 Newton Abbot to Liskeard. Very high density with tall seats and only 2 tables in the coach I was in, plugs between the seats for the airline rows. WiFi wasn't working. Goes nicely though.

I'm pretty sure all Standard Class GW Mk3s are like that. Nothing strange here.
