Schools throw up the odd unusual working, such as the 15.58 Ingatestone to Colchester.

I can't remember the exact service, however I think there's a South Western Railway service to Corfe Castle which doubles back four times, at Yeovil Junction, Yeovil Pen Mill, Weymouth and Wareham. I guess that could be considered unusual. :)

There are some interesting through workings, such as Holyhead to Maesteg and a St James Park (Exeter) to Cardiff service.

Does the 9am Cardiff to Gunnislake service still run?

Also, the two trains per day that call at both St Budeaux Ferry Road and St Budeaux Victoria Road. They run via Plymouth, and take about 20 minutes, even though the station entrance's are literally opposite each other. Sadly, a direct ticket will not be sold.

What are any unusual train services that operate in Britain.

For example, the 2O24 1520 Crosshill - Glasgow Central, which, according to an old thread is meant for the school in Crosshill, and it only operates on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
I'd imagine services that do not run every weekday, or only run on specific weedays, are quite unusual these days. Are there still some Friday night only services out of London terminals? There was of course the Stockport-Stalybridge Parliamentary that was Fridays only but I think that's on Saturdays now?
Back in the day, I can remember Wednesday-only market day short workings into Pwllheli on the Cambrian Coast line and I think there was a Monday-Weds-Fri (or something similar) on the Kyle Line or somewhere in Scotland.

I think the Sundays Only Brighton - Cardiff Central services are a little unusual. Also when there were direct Chester - Southport services. Long distance through services that you wouldn’t necessarily think to link.

As someone else said, St James’ Park to Cardiff is another. Assuming it starts at the park for operational convenience.

There was a week or so earlier this year where trains to Cardiff were limited due to engineering works somewhere between Bristol and Cardiff, a morning service from Weymouth ran to Cardiff direct. Not that unusual geographically but unusual in practice.

That Weymouth to Cardiff isnt it in the block that involved an Exeter St Davids to Weymouth via Bristol TM, Bristol Parkway, Swindon, Melksham, Westbury then onwards. It was actually a combination of several services lashed up together

It’s very useful most of the year for schoolchildren from Holyrood High School, the largest school in Scotland. I’m not sure if it actually still runs when the school is off.
It doesn’t; there are also a couple of 6 car Circle services that run 3 car when the schools are off. There’s a school service for Oban High School kids in the afternoon, 2Y94 1611 Oban - Dalmally.

Back in the early 90s in the Inter City era, there used to be CrossCountry overnight services that operated Friday night/Saturday mornings during the summer only, to Devon & Cornwall.

17:49 Liskeard to Gunnislake being a prime example of St Budeaux linked services. Was thinking that whilst awaiting the 17:33 Liskeard-Newton Abbot HST last week.

There's a once day 17.45 fast from Hayes (Kent) to London Bridge.

I never knew that...

...Sounds like it could be fun  (a bit like that service from Orpington which starts from platform 1 in the evening which runs fast to London Bridge)

Looks there is also a 18:15 Hayes - London service as well which runs fast to London Bridge

There are a couple of ex-ECS non-stop services from Hayes to London Bridge.

A bit like there are a few ex-ECS non-stop* services from Broxbourne to Liverpool Street in the evenings

(* non-stop but slow as they soon catch up with a service which calls at most of the stations towards Tottenham Hale)

The 19:23 Waterloo to Hampton Court. It runs non-stop to Surbiton. Only service that doesn't call at all stations. I think it runs to help with conflicting ECS moves from Waterloo to Wimbledon depot.

Does WNR still run that one Hereford to Stourbridge and Dorridge service?

2C71 1911 Hereford to Dorridge runs on Saturdays :)
My mind must be muddled up!

As mentioned in other threads elsewhere there are a handful of late night and early morning SW mainline trains from Waterloo via East Putney and the LU line to Wimbledon.

The Sundays only Edinburgh - Oban and return services were aimed squarely at the day trip market and, in any case, didn’t run this summer. Not really an ‘unusual service’.
