As 158s become closer to being introduced into operation on the North East Business Unit services, I thought it would be a good time to start a thread for them. The first service should be 11th February on the first Carlisle to Newcastle as per posts on Facebook groups. Now I'm assuming it would actually work at least the last one to Carlisle on the Sunday night too.

Does anyone know which 158s are currently in use at Heaton on training sorties?

How many of the 16 158s mentioned elseware (14 Perkins , 2 Cummins) does NL have to find for transfer to Heaton to run the Newcastle Carlisle service. NL seems to always be short of units.

There's reportedly eight units entering service initially. There's at least a couple up at Heaton already, of course.

We've had a few 158s on training duties in the NE. Think they rotate them currently with other sets. We've had 850/1/3/70/1. The current training unit is 158850. This week has seen the commencement of the first Darlington drivers and Middlesbrough guards training. I'm interested to see if or when the first 158 makes it to Whitby? With crews who work the line now being trained, it's a likely possibility in the future.

Is Monday still on for the 158s to enter service in the North East? If so, what will replace their current diagrams around Yorkshire?

Hopefully Scotrail will change Glasgow to Carlisle services to 158 operated then more service could run through

I would hope that the sixteen 170s they've acquired from Scotrail would have some impact on Neville Hill's 158 requirement.

Not really, as some of the units that were used on the Harrogate line were cascaded across to the North West and there's still short forms daily

The makeup on the Harrogate line changed notably this last week...

As time has progressed on from last May, the 170s have become more common, the 156s and 158s had disappeared, and (finally) short-forms had reduced to a dribble. The remainder is a mix of 150 and Pacer

This week has seen a sudden increase in 158s, both 2- and 3-cars, and a drop in 170s.

I'm not sure if this is the start of a move to shift the 170s away from the line, or a prelude to the expected increase in off-peak services, which were always slated to be 158s.

Not cleared on GSW
Are they cleared to Dumfries? Two Northern 156 diagrams go up there... and if they're to stick 158's on Connect duties they could well take over those early runs... or are they Scotrail crews?

Seems to be confirmation elsewhere that the last Newcastle-Carlisle tonight will be operated by a 158 to get it in place for tomorrow morning. The diagram linked to that is the first Newcastle-Chathill in the morning which should therefore also see a 158 operating it.

From another thread Perkins engined 158s 853 and 860 where reported on Newcastle services. Not sure if they are permanent transfers.

158860 worked the 16:15 from Newcastle to Carlisle today, among other services on the Tyne Valley. 158853 was also reported to be out in service on the Tyne Valley today, however it failed and was replaced by 156490 in the afternoon.

Here's a shot of 158860 at Newcastle waiting to work the 16:15 to Carlisle earlier today:

158907 was working services in the north east today. We used to see the WYPTE 158s on the Durham Coast working Transpennine and local services alike the best part of twenty years ago, but I didn't expect to see one up there in the current franchise!

First 158 worked to Nunthorpe yesterday for some years. Last time I saw one go up there was in the mid 90s due to a train failure. Was a TPE unit.
