I think it is booked on a Saturday night irrespective of any Engineering Work.

When did that come into effect? First time I’ve noticed them there at all.

Is there still oppo’s and other gauge issues in the area?

Turn of the year. Gauging issues were sorted unless odd instances but which do not bar them from Fratton depot.

I thought the Saturday diagrams on the Portsmouth run finished further west. When they started running at the turn of the year there was a speed restriction and an oppo at the harbour.

This is as reliable a source as you will get:-

/www.railforums.co.uk/threads/gwr-class-165-166-turbo-diagrams.157030/page-20 (Post #572). Assured that everything is being dealt with in the background so if a Turbo was on Fratton Depot they must have been cleared now.
There is no 2123 Portsmouth Harbour to Westbury on a Saturday night so it has to stay at Pompey. What did you mean by saying that they finished further west ?

Thanks for finding that. I previously thought the Saturday turbo diagrams were different to the weekday diagrams, but as far as I was aware the Saturday diagrams still finished either at Bristol or Westbury. I’ll have to have another look now

2 158s finish at Cardiff, 1 starts at Cardiff so those are out of the equation to start with and another finishing at Exeter. 2 more have been withdrawn to work between Bristol and to and within West of England.

I noticed 158961 running as a 2 car set on 15:50 EXD to PLY today. Has the set been made 2 car permanently as part of cascade changes or is it simply a case of a faulty car?

It was certainly unexpected when I was at Salisbury that day, but the extra space was needed as that service was wedged out by Trowbridge due to a running event in Bath.

Single 166 working the 17:30 Cardiff - Portsmouth. Not sure if it’s meant to have a 165 as well? Either way, train is completely overwhelmed and the air conditioning is broken, with the ‘working’ hoppers open. Hopefully this won’t be a sign of things to come over summer but I fear it will.

Should be a 165 also as far as Westbury

TBH won’t be much different to the 158s.

Travelling on the 166s since they started working on the Cardiff - Portsmouth route since January, a couple of things that frustrate me about the units are how slow the doors between the carriages open. You press the open button and the the first door takes a bit of a while to respond, but the second door seems to take forever! Also the condition of the cubicle toilet with its old water flush toilet leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe it’s because I’m used to travelling on Desiros!

I don’t find the doors too bad, it’s made up for by how quickly the external doors open. However they are definitely commuter trains, unlike the 158s which have interiors that seem more intercity than the 800s, and I’m not sure that a commuter interior is what Cardiff-Portsmouth services need.

Thanks. Don’t think it helped that the 16:30 from Cardiff to Portsmouth started at Filton due to a train fault
It went over as a 166 that was ok to go through the tunnel because of the ongoing issues but it couldn't come back.........

The doors between coaches are counted as fire doors on 166s.

Special regulations for the Severn Tunnel mean all fire protection equipment must be working for the train to remain in passenger service.

The doors have a tendency of failing quite frequently - not an issue most places but any situation where they need to isolate a door the unit then can’t go through Severn Tunnel in passenger service.

What I’m presuming happened is at some point while on the welsh side one of the doors failed and had to be isolated.

Will there be anymore Portsmouth diagrams going over to turbos at the May timetable change?

Anyone shed any light on this? The 1023 from Portsmouth harbour was a Turdo this morning, until now this has been a solid 158 job.

I think there was supposed to be a planned step up in Turbos due on 19th because IETs now cover most Bedwyn services? Don’t know which specific services though.

0830 Cardiff to Portsmouth has also gone Turbo. There is now no 158 overnighting at Canton as they now run ECS to and from the Marsh

Thanks, so is that now 50% of them, I think there were two out of eight on the circuit the last time it was discussed in depth?

I was on 165114 on the 17:12 Paddington to Reading stopper (2R55), was this a one-off (seems likely as it came off a Didcot local)? Didn't do too well as it kept losing time, 5 late by West Drayton.

Is there a list of trains to avoid (Turbos) working East of Salisbury somewhere?

It’s booked for a 6 car Turbo (since Monday) - it did have its partner this morning but it looks like it was split up at Reading to cover for a failure on the North Downs late afternoon. 3 vice 6 will lead to extended dwell times unfortunately.

2C98 2306 Bristol Temple Meads to Exeter St Davids last night was worked by 165129. Additional Turbo work is covered under STP arrangements as and when more become available until the next Permanent change date. Similar next week. It then went ECS to stable in the Bay at Taunton to work 2C06 0534 Taunton to Westbury.

Slightly off topic but I have not seen 150001 or 150002 in the Plymouth or Cornwall area in recent weeks. Does anyone know where they have been operating recently?
