Errr.... the name of it escapes me, but it's the wider space between the bones in the female that allows a baby to be born isn't it?

Your thinking of the angle between the pubic bones.

Essentially the pelvis can be “sexed” by looking at the two pubic bones.
Male the angle is that between forefinger and index finger.
Female the angle is that of thumb and index finger.

The innominate bones are the majority of the pelvis. Often wrongly called the hip bones and are formed from the fusion of the ilium, ischium, and pubis.
