A series of key West Lothian bus services are to be scrapped, in a bid to save over £500,000 from the council's budget. Eight routes will be cut in total, as well as a series of funded afternoon services in town centres.
Currently the
West Lothian local bus network is provided through a combination of commercial services (80 per cent of the network) and council subsidised services (20 per cent). The commercial network underwent significant and largely positive changes in 2018, as First Bus revised its services and Lothian Country extended its operations. This has resulted in a number of route and timetable overlaps between the commercial and subsidised network.
The council has had to undertake a review of the bus services it subsidises this year, because of the improvements in the commercial operations, as local authorities are not permitted to directly compete with the commercial market
The eight services that will go include:
- Bathgate to Broxburn/Edinburgh - Sunday early morning No20
- Whitburn to Edinburgh - No20?
- Livingston to Bathgate - 12 SD Travel ( I think the 11 might stay another )
- Broxburn to Bathgate - No20 Blue bus and SD TRAVEL
- Livingston to Edinburgh - No27 Blue bus
- Whitburn to Harthill - ?????
- Oakbank to Birniehill - E&M No28A
- Whitburn to Livingston - Saturday No1 service SD Travel
These are wholly duplicated by the commercial network and will generate savings of £305,974. The town centre services, for which funding runs out at the end of July, offer extra buses between 3 and 5pm in Linlithgow, Bathgate, Armadale and Livingston.
The cutting of these afternoon additional services will save £257,000.
Campaigners in Broxburn have asked for and won promises of a review of buses serving the town centre, recognising the growth of social housing on the northern side of the town and its distance from the main shopping centre.
A commercial operator withdraw from the route earlier this year.
