commentary on his expected departure. https://www.theguardian.com/politic...-grayling-the-3bn-master-of-disaster-bows-out
...There will never be another Failing Grayling. At least one seriously hopes not. He is the failure’s failure. A parliamentary museum piece who has yet to find a job he can’t do badly. No other minister has wasted quite so much money while justice and transport secretary.

At the latest count he has cost the country £3bn in the past five years. That means we could have paid him £1bn to stay at home, doing nothing but watch TV and mowing the lawn, and still have been £2bn better off. Just by diligently turning up to work each day, Grayling has prevented two hospitals from being built....

this is neither news nor a shock. his use as a shield is no longer required. Boris will appoint one of his own, lower level supporters, as a replacement as a reward for their support.

Just read the link and almost started to feel sorry for him. Made me think and gave myself a question. Surely no one is that incompetent accidentally, as in Clouseau style. I mean surely no one can give a ferry contract to a company without ferries, unless on purpose. Is it a possibility he didn't do research or had bad advice. Could he have been getting little brown envelopes. I just don't get it, I don't believe someone is just that clueless, unless purposefully.

Is there actually anyone available to do the job (i.e. in the government!) that even potentially could be a good choice?
Anyone who wants to be a minister under Boris apparently has to support no deal - and as far as I'm concerned any politician who supports such a stupid idea must be presumed incompetent. Certainly I can't think of any Brexiter who's achieved much in government.

Be careful of what you wish for. There could be a lively thread here about Mark Francois, the new transport minister. :)

I'll trump you with Esther McVey!

(Actually, he could offer it to a token 'Remainer' knowing its a poisoned chalice and they will inevitably fail.)

Lol!

Unfortunately the role has always been something between a poison chalice and an unglamorous dead-end. Let’s hope the job goes to someone decent this time round.

It's sometimes a convenient foothold for someone on the way up (Hammond, Darling) but those ones don't usually last long.

Don't you mean "I'll ***** you with Esther McVey"? The mods might disapprove of your language. :)
There are quite a few words that could replace your asterisks which conjure up some very unpleasant images!

True, but its usually a forgotten backwater where to keep it out of the headlines is to succeed. Thanks to Mr G this is no longer the case. The one positive point for whoever gets the job - how difficult can it be to be 'better than ...'?

Well it will go to a Tory so decent is unlikely!

As I said at the top it will go to a minor player in team boris who needs rewarding but isn't important enough to need one of the top jobs

Cheer, clean, enjoy, favor, float, focus, frame, leave, marry, photo, spite, thank, touch, trust or worry?

So it won't be down to Grayling to announce the cancellation of HS2, which is a shame in a way because there's no-one whose squirming I would rather witness. His statement would, of course, not reflect this in any way, as it would be presented as a triumph of good housekeeping and sound government.

'Match' came immediately to mind - and 'brain' and 'crown'. 'Marry' is unlikely since she is engaged to the equally nauseous Philip Davies MP; if ever a couple are destined for a future together, it is that pair - hopefully some distance away from here. Falkland Islands?

Haven't the Falkland Islanders been through enough?!?

Might act as a deterrent to prevent invasion.

They took little enough notice of their last invaders, ignoring him will be no problem

Almost 500,000 residents with less common sense than him (so he won't feel inferior)

Over 50 islands for him to visit. Every possibility of him getting lost.

I was going to suggest St Helena but that really is dependent on a good transport system.

Is that the shiny dome of an Argentinian tank coming towards us?
Oh no. It’s far worse than that.
Very good. I'm glad I made my previous post now, if only for your reply!

That's John Crace's sketch-writer's piece (inventor of the term Maybot), and often very funny.
It's not meant as a serious analysis, he does the same satirical dismantling of all the prominent MPs when they hit the headlines.
Grayling is a committed Bexiteer so stands a chance of staying in the cabinet or even the same job.
Of the names mentioned Esther McVey and Liz Truss both seem to me like railway-hostile people, so no thanks.
Don't forget the Chancellor wields a lot of power over rail spending and over any future reorganisation.
It won't be Philip Hammond, who overall was mostly a friend of rail (with a few bad patches like Heathrow Southern Access), and was also a former SoS when Crossrail and GW electrification were approved.

McVey is hostile to the human race, full stop (except, of course, the ones who can advance her 'career'.)
