It's not wildly different from a 3-car 185, which is why ordering that length of 185 was a hair-brained idea which has caused serious overcrowding issues for the entire time the things have been in service.

Going by Platform 5:

2-car 158: 16 First; 122 Std
3-car 158: 32 First; 192 Std
3-car 185: 15 First; 154 Std

The 185 seems quite wasteful of space compared to a 3-car 158.

The exhaust stacks take up 2 seats' worth of space. It's more the inefficient layout with a very high number of tables plus the silly location of the "ballroom".

But anyway this thread is about 158s :)

It's those massive exhaust stacks! :D (And possibly the universal toilet and the wheelchair space and the bike space)

I was thinking more the 'dance floor', the wasteful arrangement of the disabled toilet.

Yeah the always seemed a bit bizarre to me, 158s far more sensibly arranged in that regard!
