Whilst slightly off topic, I feel that Kermode & Mayo's Cinema Code of Conduct would be hugely appropriate for quiet carriages.

"The Cinema Code of Conduct consists of the following rules:
  • No Eating anything harder than a soft roll
  • No Slurping
  • No Rustling
  • No Irresponsible Parenting
  • No Hobbies
  • No Talking
  • No Mobile Phone Usage
  • No Kicking of Seats
  • No Arriving Late
  • No Shoe Removal (except where culturally appropriate, such as in Japan)"
In recent years they've informally added a 'no smelly foods' rule to the list. So, back on topic after all.

I completely agree, although I'd say the smelly food clause is a bit too drastic (in trains, not in cinemas).

That's true, most of the food I eat on trains is quiet like a sandwich. I was referring mostly to snacks that come in packets that are impossible to open without making noise, I'll amend my previous post to make that clearer.

I don't think there's an expectation that in a quiet carriage monastic silence is expected though, so that anyone with a cough or a rustly anorak on is thrown out!

After all low conversations are allowed, and the noise of a crisps being eaten would be partially offset by the train rumble anyway

Problem with quiet carriages/spaces is smaller noises are more magnified. Nothing worse than sitting in a quiet coach or something and then the incessant sniffer turns up.

When it comes to a quiet coach just don't be a dick. Talk quietly if at all and make sure any personal devices are kept for personal use so nobody else can hear them. It's unbelievable that people are unable to abide by a simple rule like that ina quiet carriage, when really it should be universal in all carriages for the most part. If you want to make a phone call either keep your voice down, or go and take it by the doors if there's room.

Not just the quiet coach. The four rowdy, drunk & drinking 'gentlemen' on my 0726 train this morning would do well to heed that advice too.

There's such a lack of consideration for other people these days. Whether it's a lack of self awareness or lack of empathy.

I don't think it's a new problem. There have always been jerks who don't consider the consequences of their actions for others. Thing is, there's more people now, and we live more closely together than we've ever done before, so we all notice it more.

I loved travelling by train in Japan. People were quiet in all carriages, food was the cold bento boxes so it didn't stink the place out, and nobody was inconsiderate. Phone conversations are a massive taboo. It is possible for a society to act like that; I have no idea why we in the west seem incapable of it.

To be fair, I'm not sure that such a regimented society would suit me.

There must be a happy medium.

It seems to me that what we really need are trains with individual soundproof, lightproof, smell-proof pods so that some people don't have to suffer the western horror of other people existing in their spaces. Of course passengers would still have to suffer the inhumanity that are stations, where they are forced animal like into open spaces where they may have to interact and share their air with other people.....

Those who insist on using nail varnish should be shot.

Agreed....

And those who insist on filling the carriage with enough hair spray to turn flies into gliders, or a "quick blast" of a deodorant that has people half-way down the carriage coughing....

Hen parties seem to specialise in this, as well as leaving the tables swimming in Prosecco...

Got to love some of those rules, no slurping, well there wouldn't be an issue if soft drinks weren't dispensed into those cartons[or whatever you call them] that mean that you have to use straws to drink it, plus that they also sell hot smelly foods like hot dogs.

When I come to power I'm banning crisps from cinemas, how they're allowed is beyond me.

Sour cream and onion Pringles on a train are deadly in a confined area.

Slightly off topic but passengers, mainly women who spray an extraordinary amount of perfume on themselves in the coach or those that use nail varnish remover on the train. Thats horrendous to be around.

Quavers are another type of crisps I can't stand, they taste fine but they smell awful.

I feel like the last point is exaggerated by many passengers in my view. I've been on many trains with hen parties and the like and perfume and nail varnish are the least of my concerns (more bothered by alcohol). If anything, I'm more bothered by the smell of men's deodorant and cologne, although that's even less common.

I'd rather a train full of inebriated footy fans than one drunk hen party. The behaviour you get from them isn't just rowdy, it's well beyond that.

Agree, if men behaved in the same manor as some hen parties do then they'd get the jail no question.

Yip fully agreed. I would say women are actually to most ignorant on trains with various highly annoying traits including. Hen parties/drunk women who rules don't apply to, the nail varnish, high pitched shreaking, loud telephone calls.

Thankfully I've yet to encounter the football crowd on trains, never happened in all the years of rail travel.

Yip especially the language they think they can get away with.

If you think their behaviour on trains is bad wait till you see the standard out of control hen party at sea.... absolutely disgraceful!

Double standards IMO

Living close to Cardiff, I have to put up with football and rugby crowds far more than I'd like, I find it much worse than a hen party honestly.

"women are actually to most ignorant on trains with various highly annoying traits". Care to explain what you mean by that?

Don't be silly. No one's going to get put in jail for being anti social. And men do behave the same as women in situations like hen parties, and they're both as bad as each other. Let's not talk about any differences in gender when it comes to these things, because there aren't any.

I did. It's just after the section you've quoted.
