Looks good. What was Newton Heath's depot number from the old style in the 1960's? Lostock Hall was 10D.

Ok cheers just wondering so I can update the wiki page, can't guarantee it'll stay with 050 as stored as someone keeps on changing it.
I did notice that some witty soul had added a "The Class 142 is a bus." header to the wikipedia page yesterday

not yet, will post it here when it comes up. will either be for landore or newport docks
Thanks :)

In RAIL 895, on page 18, Richard Clinnick claims that five 142s have moved under their own power to Wales in two batches (but listed together as 142012/042/049/079/086), so I interpret that as the first three which I knew about (142012/079/086) and a further two which are new ones on me (142042/049) - when did these two move...?

The article also states:
RAIL said:

Transport for Wales told RAIL in October that it planned to use former Northern '142s' as parts donors for its own fleet, but there are suggestions that the trains could yet be used to replace TfW Pacers. As this issue of RAIL went to press, TfW had yet to confirm the plans.

"Parts donors" makes more sense to me, though are five units really required for that just for another 7 months of operation, or is this normal if production of Pacer parts has just stopped...? As for the ex-Northern Pacers replacing some of TfW's Pacers, that makes no sense to me as not only do they not have dispensation to operate in a non-PRM compliant state, but they're also apparently in worse condition.

if something happened to one of there pacers (like the fire yesterday) would one of these replace it or would they not be cleared to run

Ah thanks, so yet again, what "has happened" hasn't happened yet...

if something happened to one of there pacers (like the fire yesterday) would one of these replace it or would they not be cleared to run
The simple fact of the matter is they haven't received dispensation so wouldn't be allowed to run, although I suppose they could receive it later...

Well they are coming up to 40 years old, so parts are probably very difficult to get hold of, so stripping the ex Northern ones is probably the only way of keeping the TfW fleet running.

They were built between 1985 and 1987, so they range from 33 to 35 years old, and some of the specified parts have changed since then, but I get what you're saying. I thought production of spare parts for Pacers ended in 2019 as it was thought that the units wouldn't be running in 2020...?

Also, as TfW Rail operate 15 142s and 15 143s, surely only some 142 parts can be fitted to 143s, so what would be used as a source of the different 143 spares...?

I have got a question; the 142s were fitted with new Voith final drives in 2014 following incidents were cardan drive shafts had fallen off at speed. Were the 143s and 144s equipped as well or do they retain the original SCG final drives?

i have just been thinking, if they use the one for spares at cardiff they have 4 at landore. if the 4 at landore are then used would this then not allow the class 37 sets to return back to colas? i imagine pacers are cheeper to lease and run

Again, of the stock you mentioned in your post, Transport for Wales have only received dispensation for PRM non-compliance for the 15 142s and 15 143s they acquired from Arriva Trains Wales (until 31/7/20) and for the Mark 2s until 30/6/20, though also again, this could change...

Where did you get that info?
Since Leyland and BREL don't exist anymore, I'm pretty sure spare parts wouldn't have been manufactured for a long time!

Since Leyland and BREL don't exist anymore, I'm pretty sure spare parts wouldn't have been manufactured for a long time!

The Cummins L10 engines were fitted in the early to mid 1990s and this engine was updated to become the M11 and later the ISM 11 which is still produced. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cummins_L-series_engine
The Voith T211r gearboxes fitted to Pacers between 1989 and 1991 are common to Classes 150, 153, 155 and 156. The entire Class 142 fleet received new Voith final drives and cardan drive shafts in 2014. https://www.railwaygazette.com/trac...-dmu-final-drives-and-wheelsets/39344.article

As can be seen, the 142s don't have a lot of original parts. The Class 153s and 155s built by Leyland bus also use certain Leyland National bus parts.

I know tfw Pacers have dispensation till then hopefully Wales will be rid of them then I also hope the north are to as well as both regions getting a hst ie hs 2 for north and one for Wales too
i find the pacers are better suited to some lines than class 150s, what on earth are you talking about HSTs?
