There seems to be a lot confusion about 50 and 52 which has been perpetuated since an error was made somewhere along the line. The Kingsbury move on the 20th went from Worksop and was made up of 37 / 52 / 64 which stayed together after their arrival from Heaton on the 30/11/19. There is photographic evidence (facebook last days of pacers) that 52 was in the middle of the other two and it is very unlikely they would have been shunted around. 50 moved from Heaton to Gascoigne Wood along with 39 and 66 on the 11/12/19. The first scrap move from Gascoigne Wood was today meaning 50 is still at Gascoigne. Somewhere along the line someone has erroneously recorded 52 as 50 and vice versa which is a simple error to make. This has been repeated leading to the confusion.

Does anyone know what is in the Heaton Gascoigne Wood today ?

For the uninitiated and by way of a recap can someone confirm which location means what?

Kingsbury and Booths = scrap yard?
What does being at Gascoigne Wood or Worksop mean? Holding pending a trip to the scrap yard?

Kingsbury, booths and Newport docks are scrapping locations. Gascoigne Wood and Worksop are storage locations before the go for scrap/preservation

Would be nice to see a few more pacers get preserved on heritage lines, hopefully some preserved lines a bit more closer to me , might have their eyes on a prize, East kent is probably my closest (Sussex) id be happy to donate a bit of cash. May be spa valley railway or lavender line.

Does anyone know of any more heritage lines looking to obtain a pacer? I know of someone who is willing to pay the cost of one in return for a few rights on it.

Given the relative cheap cost of getting one i'm surprised there haven't been more preserved. They will be part of our railway heritage very soon!

A few have already been secured, the only real gap remaining is nobody's taken a chance on 3-car 144 (yet...)

Not every railway will be interested in a 1980s DMU though, especially in areas they never ran. On the plus side, a Pacer would be a cheap and hopefully reliable unit for "early-bird" services while the kettles are still being prepped... but many railways do WW2 or "Roaring Twenties" events, where a souped-up Leyland National in the background will ruin the illusion of the photos!

I think if I was a preserved railway I'd go for the aluminium bodied 143 144s rather than the rust afflicted 142s.
Also I wonder how they will fare on a 25mph railway in permanent low (hydraulic drive) gear.

A guage conversation to 25mm would make them even more unstable

I'm thinking you probably mean a 25mph railway! :D
I can see where you're coming from, very valid thought.

141113 at Butterley has the same engine and transmission, last I knew it was still doing well. I wonder if anyone on here works with it and might be able to enlighten us on how they manage with this conundrum?

I'd consider making a donation to the KWVR if they promise NOT to get a Pacer!

Is there anywhere that we could run 2x 8-car pacers at full speed head on into each other?

Make great material for a train disaster film!

The problem with keeping the preserved first generation DMUs running is getting parts. I read recently that the cost for a single refurbished axle for a heritage DMU is about £10k.

Pacers are just as much part of railway history and several should be preserved as runners on heritage railways. They are a cheap to operate unit for a heritage railway. Many of the younger generation won't remember Class 25s, 304s, 504s, 104s, 108, 115s etc.

It is just the same with vintage bus rallies. I don't consider a lot of the buses that are at the rallies vintage and vehicles such as Dennis Dart SLFs are just too modern for me. My idea of vintage vehicles are Leyland Titan PDs, Daimler Fleetlines, AEC Routemasters etc , though the younger generation won't remember these in service,

today I videoed the class 142s and HSTs at Gascoigne Wood as I passed through on the train. Can anyone help me on how to upload the video please? It's 275,000 KB.
