NRE is suggesting that some Liverpool trains will divert via Chester.
So that means using Voyagers, or extending existing Chester Voyager terminators to Lime St.

Great, although I do feel sorry for passengers at stations like Holmwod, East Grinstead & Dean whose landslips didn’t appear to be repaired with anything like the urgency that a major mainline receives
I would hope that "a major main line" (your words) would be treated as a more serious problem and with more urgency than what are effectively suburban routes. Would you like to justify the alternative?
I don't thing the Dutton slip looks anything like as bad as what happened on the Southern, or the G&WSR's latest problem.

Agreed - just a bit of an inconvenience for "local" travellers and there is zero freight effectively. Hourly service generally

As opposed to the WCML being one of the busiest mixed traffic railways in Europe.

I have Advance split tickets tomorrow morning to Newcastle via Carlisle (starting at Southport, joining an Avanti on the WCML at Wigan NW). It's an ex-BHM train which comes through Crewe and Warrington BQ. What are my chances? And would staying on Northern to MAN and jumping a TPE to Newcastle be permitted in the circs?

The south of England has something of a priority system in place for landslip repairs at the moment, although miraculously the four landslips on the Horsham to Dorking line didn’t take long to fix sufficiently for trains to run, despite the fact that the line is about as quiet as it gets in the region.

The Wivelsfield landslip, as well as the one at Haywards Heath (which was dealt with so smoothly that almost nobody noticed it happened), have taken priority, and rightly so. Likewise the more minor slips at Shalford Junction and Hove Tunnel. All of these, on busy through routes, have needed the most urgency.

Tonbridge to Redhill would have been fixed in 5 minutes if it was on the west coast main line.

That’s not remotely true. The ground was still moving for about a week after closure, let alone the access works required or the extensive rebuilding itself. Even the WCML would have succumbed to the boring practicalities.

I was being sarcastic mate. I guess that's not so easy to get across when typing.

There are none going

There are none going via Chester but there are some going via Warrington. One departed Crewe a few minutes ago.

By the way, to the person who said staff at Lime St had said Merseyrail weren't accepting Avanti tickets, this is another case of misinformed staff causing trouble - they are and Avanti's website clearly says so. This needs to stop.

(LNR's website, by the way, is near-exceptional in the detail about alternatives, other than it says you can use Avanti via any reasonable route, which they mean "to get back to LNR's service" however that isn't what it says. I did cheekily ask their Twitterer if I could just go to MK via Avanti and they thought not, so I'm not sure why the website doesn't say "any reasonable route to Crewe or Stafford where you must join a LNR service" as would make more sense).

The last 4 Down Liverpool trains of the day appear to be running via Manchester - at least they disappear from RTT at Crewe North Jn, probably to reappear at Edge Hill.
About half the London-Scotlands have run through on the normal route via Warrington, but there's been a big gap this evening.

I'm assuming Freight has had priority over the Single Line as its difficult to put containers on a bus.

I would also be surprised if the line is fixed as quickly as NRES is suggesting (Wednesday morning) I would have thought its more likely to be the end of the week or maybe Monday of the next.

NR closing the line from 19-30 tonight till 07-30 in the morning filling the land slip with stone

It's a known issue that sarcasm doesn't always come across online, and quite a lot of people use the (fairly widely recognised)

indicator at the end of their posts.

Some observations I have noticed today

Grand Central North West training runs ( 4 ? ) Crewe to Wigan and back all cancelled. Schedule shows runs tomorrow to Preston and Blackpool ; doubt if they will run if WCML not fully open.

Some s/b Avanti trains to Euston using single line working around 6pm.( 2 I noticed were going via Birmingham )
Some that were due to go via Birmingham diverted via Man Picc and went down Trent Valley passing Nuneaton assuming to save time
6X77 Dagenham to Mossend car train diverted via Man Picc. from Crewe. Thats a long train so no doubt causing pathing problems.

604N engineers train Crewe to Moston ran via Chester and WBQ.

All Calledonian sleepers diverted via Man Picc .

LNR appear to have rediagrammed, the units were generally not sitting at Crewe for the time to Liverpool and back. I wonder if this, like the Euston 2-track timetable, is a pre-planned contingency option?

As it was known about yesterday, it seemed to have been worked out overnight.

If it was using a pre-planned contingency timetable, it would have probably been reduced to a New St - Crewe shuttle, with alterations between New St and Euston too.

All I can say is, this has been utter chaos for the Scotland service. If they are able to send some freight via Manchester, why can’t they send some of the Scotland trains through.

Freight trains have little alternative. As others have said, you can't move freight onto roads as easily. Prioritise freight through Castlefields purely on the basis of it keeps the country running. Trains make sense to try and send passengers via Chester for Liverpool and Runcorn passengers or send them on existing services changing in Manchester.

If there is 1 path per hour available, do you use it up for a train of people who could just change trains or do you use it for freight which has no alternative routing (more so if it's powered by an electric loco as it can't divert anywhere).

What would have happened to passengers on the 1840 Glasgow Central-London Euston? It left Glasgow 45 minutes late and terminated in Preston 59 minutes late, with seemingly no connection to anything south.

Would they have taxied passengers as far as London?

Yesterday's 3x light loco paths were cancelled. Class 3s not running today and replaced by 3x further light loco paths Crewe - Crewe via Wigan.
90019 due to depart Crewe shortly on the first trip (0Z95).

Both Up & Down Mains have re-opened at Dutton Viaduct.

Apparently clever things were being done with Voyagers last night, a friend reports - double sets running to Crewe then splitting, half for Chester and half for Preston/Scotland via Manchester on at least one service.
