Sorry I should have been more specific, two separate shift patterns consisting of either 8 or 12 hours.
No problem and thanks for clarifying.

Congratulations! Out of interest, how long did it take from application to offer?I applied for the future opportunities in York and was last week offered a role at Wakefield Kirkgate SB. I am, however, yet to receive a start date although I think they said at interview that it’d be 5th May.
Thank you! I applied at the end of December 2019, had an interview on 8th February and received my formal offer on 24th February. Pretty quick turnaround to be honest from what I’m used to.Congratulations! Out of interest, how long did it take from application to offer?
Does anybody have any experience of being told 'no lone working'?
I had my medical on Tuesday and was told that I'd sailed through all the tests barring the urine sample which we have to wait for, but because of some of the medication I'm on I'm not to work alone.
Just hoping that this doesn't cost me the job. Also, how long after the medical did people receive their start date?
Just to add, the job is the future opportunities at York so I'm not currently assigned to a box.

In your offer letter does it say:Thank you! I applied at the end of December 2019, had an interview on 8th February and received my formal offer on 24th February. Pretty quick turnaround to be honest from what I’m used to.
Ah right thanks, so I should in theory be OK just not able to work one of the single manned boxes. That's what I'd thought, just didn't want NR to not take me on because of it. It may also be that in the future I can come off the tablets too which I hope will be in my favour.Yes, I’ve a no lone working restriction on me due to eye sight. My LOM had to do a risk assessment on me to ensure I could do the job (which I can). If your in a ROC style environment it’s set up to accommodate people with all kinds of impairment, as long as your capable of doing to the actual job.
Yeah, says the same for me. I think they just want you to start applying for permanent positions from the off as it’s only a 12 FTC.In your offer letter does it say:
"Whilst your base location will be as stated above, upon successful completion of signalling school you will be expected to apply for an advertised vacancy within a 75 minute radius"?
I'm assuming the base locations are purely for a line management reason whilst at signalling school
Did you apply for the Wakefield role or was this your preferred location when applying for the future opportunities? Ie were you just placed as part of the initial process or have you since applied for Wakefield after being successful on the future opportunities role?Yeah, says the same for me. Congratulations! Mine just says based ay York (but presuming that’s for school). On my online job applications it’s now referred to as Leeds sub roc, link 2. It’s good that you’ve been placed, wasn’t sure how it all worked and whether we need to be applying now for locations as they cone up.It was my preferred location when I applied for the future opportunities. Does your offer letter state a location?
Which part of the country are you? I know there is an opportunity to visit the ROC in York - I’m going next week.Hi everyone.
This thread is really useful and a lot of insight to be gained about the signalling world. I do have a question though. I have heard about people being able to arrange visits to signal boxes prior to their interview. To be fair, I haven't had it confirmed whether I have made it to interview stage but I have passed the 70 question application and reached the required benchmark for the online tests. I have just tried to arrange a visit to the signal box to be told that it won't be possible as it is a safety critical role. I understand the reasoning but I was just wondering if anyone had been able to successfully arrange a visit to a signal box and how they go about it?
Sorry for my rambling by the way. It's been a long day![]()

Can anyone give a rough indication of how many weekends you will work in a month if you are on a 8hour rota?
Thanks for that, it will be a signalling centre that I will go to with 12 hour sundaysDepending at what part of our roster you look at, you would be required to work either 1,2 or 3 weekends out of 4, but singled staff locations it will 3 out of 4 weekends worked unless 12hr Sundays are part of the roster.
Thank you Desrudy. I have emailed the York ROC to see if there are any spots available. If you are interested in a career as a Signaller, you are invited to attend an open day at York ROC on Wednesday 11th March (10am & 2pm) to learn more about the role and see first hand, the excellent facilities on offer. If you wish to attend, please email [email protected]
Thanks mate. I have emailed the York ROC now so hopefully I will get to go.Hiya mate, you can email the recruitment team and ask about the open day next week. They gave me a specific time slot so I think you need to ore book it.

I had applied for the the open day at York. Had an email back from them yesterday saying that due to the Coronavirus risk, all open days are postponed until further notice
Do you think this could impact new people coming into the job? There has been an instruction issued that no nonessential staff or visitors are permitted in any signalboxes until further notice due to risk of COVID-19 spread.
