ARSE or ARS Automatic Route Setting (equipment) basically the computer setting routes for trains according to the days timetable.

ideally for quiet through routes, or busy terminal stations - but a complete arse when it comes to busy through locations.
Not just a clever acronym then :smile:

Yes in effect, although ARSE will screw you over very quickly in a complex area.

You either work the panel yourself, set routes ahead enough to enable you to apply signal collars yourself, or you use signal collars to stop ARSE which isn’t a good idea.

ARSE won’t set routes into occupied sections, like a station platform with a train already in there - permission working so you still need to work the panel to a degree. The more you work the panel the better you’ll understand ARSE and how to work with it, instead of it working against you.

As you can probably gather, I’m not a fan.

I get your sentiment, I’d rather know how things work and be in control of it to a certain degree rather than relying on a system to make life easier. That way you’re always prepared when the dung hits the fan. So much to learn..

Exactly, if your working the panel when it goes wrong you’ll know exactly where and what’s going on. If your letting ARSE play trains then there a period where your gaining a overview of the situation.

Obviously your meant to be monitoring ARSE, so you’ll know anyway what’s going on - but I’m sure you a man of the world so know how that’s works out....

You’ll be surprised how quickly and easily you can double your basic, even adding £10-15,000 to your basic on booked nights, Sunday’s, Bank holidays etc.

The grade is short staffed across the whole country, RDW (overtime) is like a ocean of potential to earn very good sums of money.

I won’t deny it’s nice, but you have to balance and understand that if you make a mistake you could well end up behind bars.

When your into your 11th hour of your 6th 12hr night turn on the bounce, and you’ve got to authorise a train past a red signal due to axle counter failure etc you need to ensure all the correct processes have been followed, did you ensure the level crossing ahead has been cleared or the crossing keeper advised etc.

Just like driving the money men seem to forget that in their mission for big bucks.

Like you alluded to before, you don’t get that sort of money on an easy ride. I expect it to be tough and challenging and I’m sure it will be. Not many jobs around where you can just turn in and earn very good wages! Good example to bring it home !

I am expecting a long wait before I am invited to an interview (unless it happens to be a telephone one). Can anyone advise as to what I can expect at interview).

Also, has anyone got experience at working from the ROC in York?

it does worry me that one of the first question a you ask is about how much you can earn, not what the working environment like, is it busy, what the other guys like etc.

This the problem now people are big bucks base salary, even bigger bucks to be earned in realistic RDW and their eyes start rolling pound signs.

Not really giving two toots about the job or Railway, the same way the driving grade has become.

What do you know about the railway or job out of interest?

Sorry for being hostile, but it’s really annoying see a job I love being turned into a soulless cash cow by people who don’t care.

If I’ve grabbed hold of the wrong end of the stick then I apologise.

I'm also curious as to how he managed to apply as only a week or so ago he'd been rejected as he failed to meet the benchmark scores in the three tests.

Yeah I think it’s a maintainable depot. Are you due to go there on 27/4 too?

yeah , i have to report to York MDU, at 9am but does someone know what will happened during that day and could give us a schedule of this first week in the previous session .
So far we haven't received any info about it... yet : so i don't know what i should bring , if i should book a temporary accomodation , etc ...

I have a different reporting line so we must all meet there on that day. Hopefully we’ll hear a bit more about what to expect/bring/wear etc soon.

Why I want to work for railway? Respext d job, good money, most of all you won’t get laid as quickly as others, good pension and holiday something I don’t get in my current role being self employed.

I work in a safety critical trade BTw.

An earlier post asked what someone knew about the railway /job, is this important?

If so what do I need to know (on top of what got me through the interview stage)
For me the company and the way they treat their employees was the draw, I have no railway experience other than that of a passenger and I expect my knowledge of the job to be gained through signalling school (hopefully starting in 5 weeks)

I never put a preference any where throughout the selection process, I have seen posts eluding to a preference but nowhere in any correspondence was I asked to provide one
I got an email just after completing the tests to ask me to select a preferred location. It only allowed one selection so I emailed HR and they added a few to my file as I’m in the catchment for numerous locations. Not sure it matters though if we are just encouraged to apply for roles post signaller school.
