As far as a running exhibit for railtours, I believe that a charter company would be better placed to do this. LSL has a full rake along with power cars and the 125 group also has a pair of power cars and no doubt will acquire coaches.

That's not the point. Apart from the national collection, no preserved or charter-operated set is guaranteed to survive long term, whereas anything in the national collection should (in theory!).

Plenty of Coaches will still be in service for quite few years yet so plenty of opportunity to pick up a few more.

Not sure if they'd want any sliding door ones. Slam doors should be gone already, and won't be around much longer.

Indeed. And as regards those in a fairly original condition that's now limited to what remains of the EMT fleet.

If they wish to show the development of the type fully, then surely they should in fact have one with the sliding doors?

Nothing is guaranteed, any number of things could happen, even in a national museum where everything is wrapped up in cotton wool. Anyway, I think we've gone a bit off topic, as museum policies don't have much to do with HST coach disposals.

That's why I said in theory.

However, something in a national museum collection should be as safe as it realistically gets

Out of interest, what's the rough scrap value of a Mk3 coach? Glad you guys are keeping track!

They are mostly steel, and scrap steel looks to be somewhere around £225 per ton at the moment (source: https://www.lme.com/ then converted from $ into £).

Mk3s are about 35 tons, so that's £7875 if they were all steel, but they aren't so that will be minus other materials (glass, plastics, etc), transport and processing costs. There wil be some higher-value metals in there (copper mainly), but probably not enough to make much difference to the value, and the copper will be in wiring mainly which also needs processing.

I don't know what sort of price a scrappie would give in these circumstances as I don't know what their transport and processing costs would be.

Reported by a friend today that 40402 is at Weardale Railway and 40732 is at NRM Shildon.

I have seen a photo of 40402 at Wolsingham undergoing repairs. No idea why it’s there or what it’s intended use is....

Re the ex HST coach in York Yard, see my post #146.

Was still there when I took the dog for a walk up there about 2 weeks ago !

Starting to get look a bit worse for wear and I cannot imagine it is being used a stores van or anything like that as it quite a way from the main buildings.

What is the purpose of the Doncaster transfer? Part of the Scotrail Inter7City program?
If you’re referring to yesterday’s move of two trailers and three power cars, it’s extra conversions for GWR.

List updated.

Apparently 42356 has been purchased from Eastleigh Works. It's one of the former prototype coaches (ex-12003). Anyone know any more?

Saw before that some enthusiasts had been able to purchase the old seats from a carriage, would anyone know if Newport Sims would be likely to offer the same courtesy if asked?
(apologies if this is in the wrong place)
